Love the ciggies and beer.

Yeah, that caught my eye right away too. It was interesting that the audience laughed whenever Martin did that and Gobel thought they were laughing at something he said.

A better time, I think.

Could be. I remember that back around that time (the '60s and '70s) it often happened that two or more comedians would be on the show and they would start improvising among them in hilarious ways. Later on, it seemed like the show more or less settled into a predictable parade of celebrities coming on to plug their latest whatever.
