Bert Hamoen
Can anybody tell me the difference between the guns on the Pershing and on the Jackson? Both are 90 mm, but the gun on the Pershing has got a higher muzzle velocity (854 m/s - 810 m/s).
Jeff Duquette
Both vehicles used the 90mm M3 Gun. There were two iterations of 90mm M82 APC ammunition produced. The early version had a muzzle velocity of 2650-fps (807.72 meters/second). The late war souped-up version had a muzzle velocity of 2800-fps (853.44 meters/second). Apparently many of the early production run versions of the M-36 were not outfitted with muzzle breaks and couldn't (or wouldn't) be retro-fitted with such due to the additional requirements of installing a more robust equilibrator, elevating mechanism and heavier travel lock. I would surmise that the earlier versions of the M36 and its lack of muzzle break made it incapable of handling the recoil shock associated with the souped-up version of 90mm M82 APC.
