Thanks so I bought from CMCW from Battlefront and already have a slitherine account. The step that is missing above is that you have to "register a new serial" on the slitherine my page and then select your game and give it the battlefront Activation Code. That seems to have given me the steam key. Thanks

Thank you, that was extremely helpful.

  2. ...and Foundation topic was hijacked to become Dune topic

Speaking of Asimov. I tried to approach Foundation several times back in my youth, because I liked Asimov's short stories and this saga was present in all must read sci-fi lists, but every time I found it too boring to read through more than 100 pages.

Dune success - as every literary success - remains some sort of mystery, especially after the novel was declined by publishers dozens of times (reminds of Harry Potter:). Usually it explained as the effect of mixing sci-fi and fantasy themes, which had never been done before.

It's kind of prince returning home tale in a weird science fiction setting. I thought it was based on Soviet invasion in Afghanistan before I found out it was written in 60s.

  3. Nobody knows how "real events" should look like, so there is no metrics to evaluate CM "realism".

Cold War going hot, US against Russia in Ukraine - never happened.

WW2 titles are based on much more sound data. But even those things - like Tiger or T34 performance - are still subject for fierce debates.

In short, every computer game, doesn't matter how good it is, is never "reality itself", but only some kind of effort to portray it as it is seen by those who make the simulation.

This part from the Dune 1984 soundtrack is possibly the greatest single part of the movie. That, or Sting.

Lynch is one of the greatest directors ever lived, but he really made a flop out of Dune. Maybe there is a reason why he officially de-owned this movie and his name is absent in the titles.

My favorite Dune adaptation so far:

I added a German pioneer company and a company of Tiger tanks.  For the Soviets I added a rifle battalion (-) and a company of IS-2 tanks.  I then started a game by double clicking on all German units and gave them a movement order to the east (Soviet) side of the map.  My FPS averaged about 17 with shadows off.  With shadows on the FPS went down as low as 9 for several seconds with every German unit on the move.  I really couldn't tell a difference how the graphics looked and the camera moved just fine.  My PC is about 5 years old:  i7-4790K, 4GHz, GTX970.  If it makes you happy to add to the map I vote you add to the map.

The buildings are very well done and provide tactical challenges.  I was concerned there might be some door entry problems because of elevation changes but have not found any after about 15 minutes of play.

Below are a few screenshots.  I'll add some more screenshots in the CMRT screenshot thread.  Very nice map.

People have reported a CM-related affliction where, as you're driving down the road, your mind is involuntarily working out defilade ambush positions and routes of advance across the fields you pass. I recall passing a random isolated house on a hill and (tactically) noting the north-facing facade doesn't have windows. That sort of thinking works both ways. When you're in the game you should be thinking "Would I be attempting this in real life?" Perhaps your pixeltruppen are not behaving as you wish because you've put them into an uncomfortable position. There's often something in the situation that you wouldn't want to be doing if it was you on the ground with a rife in your hand.

I wouldn't like to be in any position CM puts pixeltruppen in 😂

Erm yeah no. Troops on any movement order wont stop for nothing. They can lose every single man of their squad if they arent on Hunt.

Put them on Normal and they start taking fire? Theyll start running. And then they will all die.

    Have you played this game?

It would be great to have some mix of "Hunt" and "Quick" - like quick moving that stops when taking fire or spotting enemy.

I think that could actually be done, in a campaign format using branching, ie: between big battles you have smaller scenarios replicating attempts to communicate orders/intel between bigger formations.....The outcomes of these would affect the starting forces & intel for bigger battles.

Probably the best way to simulate it would be something like this:

But in case of Soviet front in WW2 it would be like staring at the phone, sending orders sometimes without any feedback and waiting... Finally after several days you recieve your first radio call: "Comrade Stalin is displeased with your actions. You are relieved from command and must return to Moscow to take responsibilities for your shamful performance".

(At least in the first 2 years if war).

Yup plus damage all the mission critical external mounted systems. So your AFV quickly becomes a 'mission kill' and will have to retire from the action. Probably better than a hunk of smoking metal and the crew charred fragments...

But aye never realised though the external damage hard kill APS caused to the vehicle when it was used.

Yeah, it's more vulnerable and expandable then I thought as well.

Now imagine what artillery fire could do to those systems.

But it's extremly unlikely that AVFs would be under artillery fire nowdays. So military planning focused on local challenges and threats, mainly presented by RPGs or ATGMs.

Interesting thread on twitter re APS systems and number of reloads they have and the rationale for them. Of note is even if everything works perfectly, when an APS defeats an ATGM or RPG, a large volume of fragmentation and debris is projected over the vehicle, with a high probability of damaging mission critical components mounted on the vehicle.

This is worth a wee read lots of detail in it.

That's really interesting. Basically it is saying that debris from destroyed projectiles will damage APS system after about 4 intercepts max, and thats why you don't need more then 4 reloads anyway.

No, it doesn't.  I am just saying that they have done a lot of work across the campaign so far and should be considered hardened veterans regardless of status.  It would be cool if they actually stayed the same names and did increase experience levels across the campaign.  This whole campaign has been SO fun.  I finally took out the Ukrainian T-80 on the middle bridge.  Of course the T-72 with only two crew members (pic next to the T-90) swung around and got a flank shot on him.  Both hit each twice in that duel and somehow, once again, my T-72 survived.  I have 30 minutes left and am finally trying to get across the river on the left.  I honestly think this one tank has knocked out about 8 tanks and 10 vehicles so far along with countless soldiers.  I will see at the end of this one.

Just be aware - there are like 6 enemy t-64s plus a lot of BMPs!😅

    The Push to Dniprodzerhyn'sk.

Battle 4 or 5, the struggle has been so fierce I can't remember which anymore.  I so enjoy the playing the Russians and all their kit...

The core unit T-72s with their BMP-3M infantry support has been superb so far.

    Veterans now.jpg

It's "Road to hell" mission with the bridge. You must win to get access to the 5th mission, and lose 5th mission to reach the 6th😉

The most devastating consequence of which was the shutdown of the Luftwaffe's aerial reconnaissance. Photo recon was about the only reliable source of military intelligence the Wehrmacht possessed (The Abwehr was a useless organization) and it's loss left the Germans blind to the buildup of operations as large as Bagration. People on the other side of the world knew where the Russians were going by word of mouth alone-but a combination of blindness and Hitlerian denial naturally meant the German Army didn't.

Germans moved large chunk of their aviation to the West due to increased bombing campaign and - after D-day - the opening of the 2nd front. Plus by 1944 they lost lion share of their higly trained pilots, which were replaced by less experienced newcomers.
