  1. Thank you all very much, I'm glad everyone's enjoying it!

Lt Bull: Yeah, you're right the turn based LAN style is exactly the same as normal, there just aren't any replays.

Rocketman: I appreciate I move the camera around a lot, it bugs me as well because I'm basically trying to do too much at once and I've only got the one chance. This is only I think the third or fourth time I've tried to film it like this though, so hopefully I'm going to refine it as time goes on and it'll get less jumpy. PBEM is much, much easier but takes a lot longer to edit.

ZInzan: Whether I would have done things differently if it was a PBEM game is a good one. Probably, and yeah I would probably have taken my time more and the original plan to force the left hand ford could have had more than a couple of minutes thought and hasty planning. That said, I enjoy the realism aspect of the game- flying by the seat of my pants and making snap decisions is a nice break from the clinical take-your-time side to PBEM. Besides, if I don't make mistakes I'll never learn.

Speaking of mistakes, I'm see-sawing on churning out a quick "What did we learn" type video to tag on the end, because I know there are some mistakes I could have avoided (and there might even be some things in there that I did right). What do you guys think? Is that the sort of thing you'd like to see?

  2. Tanks were used very effectively in Fallujah and Aachen for example, they're worth a look. Grozny is worth another look if you want to know how to do it wrong. Self propelled guns are usually a good investment if you're getting to pick your own stuff. Don't forget that your tanks have some good indirect ways to support your infantry without actually engaging the enemy:

    • They can usually put down some effective smoke, either by shells or launchers
    • You can use HE to mousehole your way into buildings and avoid front doors and streets
    • They're also noisy as hell so in theory you can use them as part of your deception plan- haven't really tried or tested this one, but giving the enemy a load of vehicle/armour sound contacts to build up his intelligence picture on your terms is probably worth it if he already knows you have tanks.
  3. Cheers everyone!

Heinrich505, I would have been more cautious with the panthers on the left too, but I was gambling on punching through to take the pressure off my infantry and managed to convince myself this was a good idea. Then the infantry first- armour second rule reared its ugly, entirely sensible head once again... realistically I had loads of time and should have been more patient, but it sort of pays off in the long run (it also scared the crap out of Chris, my opponent, which was almost worth it on its own).

Speaking of which, the next thrilling installment:

  4. Thanks very much for the comments guys!

Umlaut I think you've got a point actually- the default icons are pretty much self-explanatory. Obviously there's some personal preference involved like you say, but putting them back on is a damn good shout. Its already all recorded so I can't change it for this game, but its something to think about for the future, thanks.

Heinrich505- glad you're liking it man. I'd love to have the camera down there all the time, but its not a PBEM game so I don't get the replay and I don't want to miss what's going on in the bigger picture. Its a bit of a compromise, but it sounds like I'm on the right track.

    Part Two is up!

  5. Decided to take the plunge and try and play my first PBEM! Never played against a human player and have to learn how to PBEM, so a little technical hand-holding might be required. No idea how fast I'd be able to churn turns out.

Would rather it was a tiny/small meeting engagement, not fussed about which side.

  6. Ah, Operation Flashpoint and Arma: experience the short, sharp terrifying life of one your pixeltruppen. Loads of fun.

Talking of short, sharp, terrifying pixeltruppen experiences here comes the start of my latest video AAR:

Its a pity you can't prepare buildings for defence, booby trap things or barricade the streets etc, but hey ho.

  7. Good luck to that Russian under the Abrams! Get your spade out and dig man!

Thanks for the comments guys- just out of interest for the replays, is there a way to bookmark camera locations? I'm just trying to manually get the camera in the same place each time and I'm not always spot on. Would make it a lot smoother.

In other news, I've got another AAR coming up:

Sucks to be in that building: in hindsight, opening fire was maybe not the best move there.

  8. At first i was getting pissed i couldn't get LOS with my Javs then this happened

Presumably it was an exasperated old-timer: "Stop mucking about with yer fancy technology and watch how a real man does it!"

At present I'm chewing my way through some QBs just to get used to everything and I have to keep stopping to film impressive stuff. We've got the plucky enemy ATGM gunner getting the Fulda Gap treatment who tries to be a hero:

Should have stayed in his hole.

And the first time I've gotten wrong-footed by the AI: "Oh, those tanks will go around the woods and we'll hit them in the flanks with the RPGs..." WRONG.

How my two T-90s ended up on the enemy flank for the last bit of footage was epic, but I pressed the big red button instead of 'play' to film the replay and lost the opportunity. They charged through enemy infantry pinned down by a torrent of small arms fire and popped up at point-blank range next to the enemy tanks. Crazy stuff.

  9. Just to quickly clear up with regards to that death-by-secondary BMP3: the crew were fine, it was the infantry in the back seats that got the collander treatment. Assuming that it was the ammunition in the first vehicle cooking off (the full load as well: this was turn 1), I personally reckon that that's a sizable enough explosion to send vehicle fragments through the side of the second BMP and probably generate a big enough shock wave to do nasty things to the squishy humans inside. Both BMP3s were 'destroyed' rather than knocked out. Of course, I have no personal experience of big explosions (this is good) but that's my two pence.

  10. Thanks John, its great to be here. However, that's no mon... its a space station *groan*. As for the Japanese I know next to nothing, although I'm happy to be somewhere where people are much less likely to assume I'm talking about the ill-fated sequel to the Manchurian Candidate when I mention the Manchurian Campaign. Seriously though, can confirm that Womble is correct and I'm a Yorkshireman.
