  1. Probably because one target is a big chunk of metal and the other is a bag of mostly water.

edit: that being said, the HE effects of ATGs does feel too strong for their respective classes in CMx2 generally. That could be an issue of misplaced perception though, I have nothing hard indicating that ATGs were necessarily bad at blasting infantry, I just notice a conspicuous lack of comment on their effectiveness in this role when reading accounts of RL action.

I was mainly talking about the crewman who survived all that artillery and kept fighting. But apparently there's some bigger bug involved, I have now had full platoon of infantry firing at the crewman for two minutes from 5-10 meters but the guy just won't die, he took about 50 rounds of smg ammo to the chest like a boss and had two F1 hand grenades explode less than a meter away from him...

  2. Could be that too :) but I'm only getting to the second line and losses among rifles are around 50-60%.

By the way, has anyone else noticed that Pak 40s have extremely strong shrapnel effect? Pretty much every round that hits ground kills 2-3 guys tens of meters away from explosion. They are doing more destruction than most artillery even when hitting a swamp! I just watched Pak 40 survive six 80mm mortar hits less than 5 meters away and the gun was only 10 meters away from 300mm rocket crater.

  3. I have been crawling trough the first Russian campaign mission for a few days now. An optimist could say that the battalion would still make a fine company...

Do I have to use this battalion again during the campaign without it getting reinforced? I'd hate to spend days on these huge mission if in the end I would be completely stuck mid campaign because of these losses.

  4. Another bug/guestion

For some reason the Russians in first Russian campaign mission are extremely bad at shooting at longer ranges. I just watched a full platoon of sappers (with plenty of ammo, not hiding, not pinned, no fire arcs) sit in a trench looking at two Germans in another trench 100 meters away (so well withing rifle range and not too far for smg), shooting at a platoon of assaulting Russian rifles that were not returning fire either. Both sappers and rifles had already spotted the Germans last turn (and didn't lose them, I checked) but not a single round went their way during the entire time.

What's the deal here? I have had the same thing going on through the entire mission, Russians just won't shoot with anything else than lmgs before they are about 70 meters away from target. Even when I give area fire order the rifles won't shoot more than once or twice in a minute. Troop quality is mainly regular so that shouldn't be an issue.

For comparison, Germans are shooting aggressively even at long ranges with all weapons and have pulled some unbelievable trickshots even with smgs, like killing two enemies with one burst, from 200 meters, at the bottom of a crater (it was practically indirect fire...)

  5. Really enjoying the game! I finished the tutorial campaign in one sitting at 6:00 am in the morning and now I have played Soviet campaign for a few hours (yet I'm only 15 minutes into the first mission :D ).

The game engine is better than ever as usual and I'm looking forward to getting it for CMBN. The eastern front landscape looks great (and doesn't have bocages). Russian forces really feel different with their short range firepower, tank riding and big-explosion-oriented vehicles.
