  1. Very interesting discussion. It is a bit disappointing that there is a technical solution that would help solve the main issue in this thread but because battlefront deem there are enough people with old systems it wont be implemented.

That's not a criticism of battlefront by the way, just the frustration of someone who has a mid to high end system. Why don't battlefront do a forum survey to find out exactly what level of hardware most of the playerbase have? Maybe you would be surprised.

    On a side note,

I made a thread last week asking if it was possible to check los from a future waypoint and was told that it was possible. However, earlier on this thread steve stated that this was a gamey feature and was removed.

Is this possible or isn't it?

  2. Got a another carrier query so may as well use this thread.

In the following screenshot I cant figure out why either of my carriers wont attack the german cruiser which is highlighted.

There is rain/snow in the area but not in any of the carriers and cruiser tiles. And yes, the carriers are on naval/tactical and they haven't moved.

  3. The island hopping thing is interesting. I find that I do it because the historian in me says that it has to be done... but Amona is right that there is little need to bother really.

For me the issue with naval units is supply. The game engine takes one supply point off every naval unit that takes part in combat or convoy raiding or whatever... but it does not penalise a ship for being at sea that does nothing. That makes no sense. I can sail the Bismarck all the way over to the pacific without a single supply stop and there is no penalty to movement range or combat efficiency at any stage.

The way to make island hopping attractive is to allow the ports along the way to recharge supply. Naval units should lose supply just by being at sea - US carriers that stay in the pacific for turn after turn should lost combat efficiency by losing supply... and then the island basis fulfil their role by resupplying the ships.

I think this would be within the capabilities of the engine because land units have their supply rating affected by proximity to supply centres... so put a BB in a port or adjacent to a port ought to possible for the engine to register resupply. It works already with subs that are reduced to 0 by convoy raiding and then have to head for a port. If this were done then suddenly the vast allied navy in 1945 would need to look at its supply situation very carefully if it chooses to sail all the way from the pacific coast to Japan. High supply ratings for Jap ships around their home islands could then be a real problem for the allies.

The only downside would be increased need for micromanagement.... but I think it is a price worth paying.

This idea sounds like a winner to me. It would make players actually need to plan naval operations which currently there is no need to do.

Would I be right in saying that the engine would be able to handle this change?

  4. Hi Lofty12, Steel32,

Just to add in case this has been missed, you can keep the Carrier in a static position and once the Carrier is selected, hold down the 'SHIFT' key and the movement cursor will be changed to a red target with a '?' mark in it. This can be used to spot within the movement range of the Carrier.

I believe this can be done with all unit types that can spot and I hope this helps,

    Hubert

Yep this is what I was looking for. Cheers.

  5. Yep; it requires you to have a certain tolerance for losses, which is certainly realistic.

It does simulate that very well. I almost feel guilty sending another recon team ahead to find out whats in the next hedgerow. I cant imagine how it must have felt for those real life recon teams who would be sent ahead knowing that that one or two of their buddies almost certainly would not be returning form the mission.

  6. Im currently playing the courage and fortitude campaign (BN) and am having real issues with the first mission.

The first query I have is about spotting. what ive been doing is creating scout units and moving them with the slow command down the road on the right and the hedgerows on the extreme left.

ive been failing dismally though. as the units moves down the road they take fire from units further down the road. when I zoom in I can even see the bullet flashes but for some reason my units fail to the see the enemy units.

I even moved a tank in support and started area fire at the bullet flashes but after 3 or 4 turns the fire hasn't stopped. are these bullet flashes an accurate representation of where the fire is coming from?

if so, then why hasn't my tank fire suppressed them and why cant any of my units see the enemy units which are supposedly 15 to 20 feet away.

its a similar story on the left. my 2 man scout team which was moving slowly along the hedgerow was wiped out with a single arty/mortar shell.

I was abut shocked with how accurate it was or was that just bad luck?

  7. bit OT but here goes anyway.

anyone else had issues setting up dropbox? ive linked it to my yahoo account which ive confirmed in the dropbox UI but whenever I try to save an attachment to dropbox I get a pop up asking me to link it again. when I click the link button nothing happens and the file gets stuck on 'saving to dropbox'.

    any ideas?
