  1. I'm trying to install some mods for CMSF, but they all say to "unzip to your z folder". I don't have any folder called "z" in my CMSF subfolders, so what the heck are they talking about? It would be good if there was a guide pinned on the forums or the repository as to how to install mods.
  2. I was planning on spending $30 for CMSF anyway, so the fact that I found it for $6 means I will definitely be buying the expansion packs. The $6 price was an extremely lucky steal. I got the very last copy of CMSF at the store. They had at least 10 copies of every other game they sold, but the CMSF shelf only had 1 copy left. I never knew how popular this game really is.
  3. Ah, I guess I should have read that more carefully, I assumed it wouldn't require a license key after patching. I couldn't figure out how to get the license from the web page, but I found it in my email. Thanks for your quick reply!
  4. I forgot to mention I also installed the paradox 1.10 patch before I installed the 1.21 patch. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything, and I checked the notes that are displayed before you click 'next' in the patch, and I confirmed that both patches were the Paradox versions. I installed the game and ran it (v1.0) and it worked fine, it did not ask for a license, but instead showed a spinning disc icon next to my mouse cursor. It was only after i installed the two patches that it started asking me for a license.
  5. I found a copy of CMSF at the Toronto Exhibition for $6, so I bought it. It's the Paradox version, so I had to go online to get the $1 patch. I installed the game, then installed the patch, then tried to run the game, but it is asking me for my license key. As far as I knew, the Paradox in-store box version doesn't use a key, it uses a disk check, and there is no license key anywhere in my box. When I downloaded the $1 patch from battlefront, it had the same filename as the other 1.21 patch ("CMSF_v121_Patch.exe"). The only way I could tell them apart was the file size, the original patch is about 130mb, the $1 paradox patch is 215mb. So I'm pretty sure I installed the right patch. Could someone please explain what is going on here?
  6. Ok thanks for the replys everyone, the performance on my new computer now is definately better than my old one (P4 2.8ghz, 2gb DDR1, ATI x850), but while other games got 2-4x the framerates from this upgrade, CMSF only got an extra 5-15fps. So just out of curiosity, no matter how expensive, what system would be able to play CMSF on max settings, max resolution, on the largest most complex maps, with a minimum of 24 fps?
  7. I have what I think is a fairly powerful computer, yet using 1024x768, AA and AS off, textures and models set to 'balanced', I average 10-20fps whenever there are significant units, buildings or trees on the ground. Here's my specs: AMD Phendom X4 9500 Quad-core @ 2.2ghz 2GB DDR2 PC 2-5300@ 333mhz ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB @ 850mhz ASUS M2A-VM motherboard, 300w PSU I haven't been keeping up with the latest stats on CPUs, and this one was given to me, so I'm not sure how great it is, but I'm pretty sure my GPU should be able to give more than 15 fps average, when I can get 30-50 fps average playing Godfather 2.
  8. Nevermind, I think I may have found the answer to my problem. I was using the 1.10 patch, and guess what the 1.11 patch includes: "Fixed a bug that caused some newer sound cards not to use enough sound channels. "
  9. The speakers are plugged in fine, I don't get this problem anywhere other than CMSF. I have two very large speakers plugged into an amplifier, which is receiving from my motherboard's built-in soundcard, because for some reason my Soundblaster Audigy won't work on Windows 7. The only option I have in windows for my speaker setup is 'stereo', so I just left it at that. Thanks for your reply!
  10. For some reason, whenever there is a firefight in CMSF on my PC, I get to hear about 25% of the weapon's sounds that I should. For example, a stryker fires its grenade launcher at maximum ROF. For the first 2 seconds, I hear every shot fired, but then as the stryker continues to fire, it goes silent. Occasionally a sound will be played, but for the most part, I don't get to hear anything. The same is true of all units, vehicles and infantry alike. I even tried downloading a community sound pack to see if it would help, and while it sounded different, the sounds were just as intermittent. I remember when I had this problem in other games (although not on the same computer), some games had a "number of sound channels" setting. If I changed the channels from 64 down to 32, the problem would be fixed. Is there any way to do this in CMSF?
  11. I made 3 changes, including changing the order type from 'max assault' to 'advance', like you suggested. I'm not sure which one fixed it, but it half-works now. I also switched the units from uncon. combatant to uncon. fighter. Finally, I made the orders more complex, by adding orders in-between. For example, in my old method, I would tell the units to go from point A to point C, now I tell them to go to A, then B, then C, which seems to have helped. I say it 'half worked' because at the end of the game, when I was allowed to see all the units left on the battlefield, I noticed that while most of the vehicles had moved up, about 25% of them were still remaining in the back, and ONLY the vehicles. All the infantry had moved up, as ordered. This might have been because the AI thought it was using them as supporting fire or backup units, I'm not sure. Thanks for all your help everyone, I appreciate it.
  12. I know this is probably a dumb question, but I can't find the answer in the game manual. In CMBB, when you called in air support, all you got to see was a shadow of the plane on the ground, even for dive bombers. According to the manual, this was because computers at the time weren't powerful enough to render it. I'm not sure why, because if they could render a tank, why couldn't they render a plane? I was wondering if you were supposed to be able to see the helicopters and jet planes in CMSF, or if they were still just a shadow, and if so, why don't they render them, even though our computers are powerful enough to do so?
  13. I started with one of the included quick battle maps, which seem to have some orders for the AI included, so I thought I was doing everything right. Only, according to the manual, if no AI group is assigned, the default group is 1. So I didn't assign the units any groups, and just made orders to group 1. I know it worked, because the infantry followed it perfectly. Its just the vehicles that sit there sucking their thumbs. I painted the area for the AI to occupy, and i set the "exit before" time to 10 minutes, but after 10 minutes, the vehicles still hadn't arrived.
  14. Thankyou for your reply. You got it right, the orders are called "maximum assault" and "assault", but I tried both, and both resulted in the vehicles not even moving. Which order type should I use to have the vehicles assist and support the infantry?
  15. For some reason, I can't create a scenario where the AI attacks with vehicles and infantry. The vehicles just sit where they started. The best I've gotten was a T-72 tank that moved a couple metres, fired a couple shots, then just sat there. The AI can attack with infantry just fine, they go exactly where I told them to go in the AI plan section of the scenario editor, as well as the terrain objective. But for some reason, even if there are 15 technicals, not a single one of them will move from their starting position. This might make sense if they were providing supporting fire or they had a target in sight, but they dont. Im pretty new to the CMSF scenario editor, most of my experience is from CMBB, so its probably something simple that I'm doing wrong. Any ideas? Thanks, -moeburn
  16. Sorry, you're right, I didn't mean to make it seem like I didn't like CMSF, it is a wonderful game, and I understand why it doesn't perform as well on my computer. It's just a little frustrating, because the one feature that annoyed me about CMBB was that individual soldiers weren't rendered, and now that they are in the new game, my computer can't play it. Oh well.
  17. It appears to be pretty well-known that you can't run CMBB with anti-aliasing turned on without messing up the in-game text. But I would really like to play with AA turned on. I was wondering if anyone knew of a work-around? I haven't been able to find one by searching. I have a computer that is somehow only powerful enough to run CMSF at minimum graphics and resolution with a low framerate, yet I can run CMBB at maximum graphics and resolution, with AA and AS on max, and still get a great framerate. Unfortunately AA messes up the bitmaps. I'm on Windows 7 with a Radeon X850.
