  1. In game terms, if this is implemented, a "no fire mounted" option should be there too, given how few AA missiles you usually get

You probably want to save them to give them the best chance to hit, except on very few occasions

And why not shoot RPGs and Javelins from open vehicles too?

It would be cool, butI think there are other things I would like to see implemented before this one

  2. I do whatever feels fun at the moment

Sometimes I reload a lot, sometimes I soldier on

After many years I have come to the simple and obvious conclusion that if I´m not having fun is not worth playing, and accept that sometimes that means reload, cheat or whatever and sometimes it doesn´t

I don´t fight it, it is pointless

Just do whatever feels like fun, it`s just a video game

  3. Speaking of TOWs, our army lost a TOW 2 recently, stolen from a base apparently

The Defense Minister said it was of no concern since they didn´t steal the launcher...

That´s what passes for high level politics around here  :D

In Spanish if anyone is interested:

Our army tends to "lose" stuff from time to time

  4. Nostalgia-ing hardcore for Longbow 2. Is there any way to get it working on Win7? I managed to get Jane's F/A-18 working.

I imagine it would be very difficult since it used 3DFX as it`s 3D standard if I remember right, a dead standard as it is, don´t even know how it looked without it

Best bet would probably be a Virtual Machine with Win98 or WinXP and no 3D effects, but a VM has a truck load of issues on it`s own, another route is building a PC out of late 90s pieces, cheap but not for everyone, hunting for drivers alone could be a nightmare

The best source of legal and working old titles is GOG.COM, of course most people here probably already know this, sadly Jane´s series is not there...yet...we can only hope

EDIT: here is a guy that claims he has done it, there are some instructions:

  5. Back off topic...

Longbow 2 was a fine game, I specially liked to fly night mission on it, I remember everything was tinted green or maybe my memories are too scrambled to serve any purpose

It even had SAR missions you fly in support, right? Which was rare, don't remember any other sim with those

But real men started with Gunship and Gunship 2000 from Microprose back in the day  :D

  6.

The tank’s targeting is reportedly done with an active-phased array antenna and a large variety of other sensors.

That sounds rather...fragile...for a tank, if put on the outside

Can you put that antenna inside a compartment surrounded by composite armor an expect it to detect anything other than...well...composite armor?

Where is an electronic/radio engineer when you need one?

  7. One thing that eludes may understanding (which is not very powerful anyway): Is the Ukrainian air force so crippled/underfunded that has no impact in situations like this? to help prevent encirclement? to help in an orderly retreat?

On thing is to pretend every separatist is born, armed and trained in his native land, another is to pretend they had an air force laying around, usually if one side has air superiority and the other nothing, it doesn´t go well for the side lacking aircrafts

Have so many AAA systems been funneled through Russia that prevent the air force to do anything meaningful?

  8. I played Tornado and yes, it was the hands down best mission planner I've ever seen in a game. I loved planning runway strikes with JP223s, setting up the initial point just right for a good attack run and then streaking overhead at nearly Mach 1, cratering the hell out of the field. That consumed an embarrassing amount of my youth and vigor.

YES! Runway strikes!...I honestly don´t know how anyone has the nerves to do that kind of mission in real life...I´m not sure if that kind of deep strike, ultra fast, low altitude thing is doable anymore in a modern setting, given all the sensors and and MANPADS going around, is someone still training for that? My sincere condolences

And also, never managed to do a proper loft bombing...and anyone that says it is possible is lying!  :P

  9. So, let´s go full off topic...

Did someone play Tornado in the early 90s? I think my father gave it to me for the Amiga 500 or one of my earlier PCs, It had one of the best mission planners I´ve seen in a simulator, that game was very unforgiven, it forced you to plan the mission for much more time than it took to actually fly it

I stopped with DCS at the second Flanker game, good times, bought A-10 but never got around to play it, my HOTAS is collecting dust somewhere, too much time consuming...

I don´t think I have time and energy for a jet simulator anymore, unless someone makes one about the A-4 with nothing more than dumb bombs and no radar

  10. Hot topic graphics it seems...

I´v been playing war-games since I started playing video games at 11 in 1986...Starting with Crusade in Europe and the like...

I don´t know if "grateful" is the word to describe my attitude towards BF since, well, they are not giving away their games as christmas presents :D  but I´m sure am happy they exits to give me something that I have enjoyed for so many years that runs on current hardware/OSs

When I look at other genres I have enjoyed through the years, it looks like a wasteland sometimes

So, as much as I would like a ton of things out of their games that are no there, I defer to their business decisions to keep them going, since I´ve seen giants of wargaming, simulation and RPGs go to hell more often than not

Ours is minority culture, and that`s that

  11. In the only mission I got a MGS in CMBS it got blown up by a T-90 before doing anything...I didn´t even reload the turn to give it a second chance...never understood how to use them properly, even in CMSF

The thing is, at least in CM, if you go against armor the MGS is going to die rather quickly an not do anything of note...if you go against entrenched inf. in an urban setting you first need to detect it (because the MGS is not likely to do it by itself an will be blown up first) and then move an MGS into position to bust them, but often that expose the damn thing too much an it gets blown up or damage anyway

  12.

I agree right now it's very "if any ADA piece is in the game, you better park the planes until further notice."  As a stupid idea:

Have a new set of strike options.  Like how you set "heavy medium or light" you'd have another tab that would be something like "close" or "standoff"

Close is what happens now.  The platform closes to attack and destroy things and enters the ADA envelope.

Standoff is the platform launching weapons from outside of MANPAD range.  For rotary wing, only helicopters with standoff type weapons (like the radar guided Hellfires) can do this, and weapons like cannons or rockets will not be employed.  They also can no longer self spot (picture it that they don't see enough of the battlefield to engage targets without someone being able to talk them onto it)  Fixed wing is similar, "dumb" weapons are not employed, missiles and guided bombs only (assuming idiots loop type attacks for the bombs).  Fixed wing will only do point targets (again, at standoff they're going to struggle to spot a tank motoring around, they need the spotter to find the target, and likely designate or feed GPS coordinates to them).

I second the motion for standoff air mission option!!

I was thinking about it the other day while reading this thread after playing a couple of missions

It is somewhat strange it is not there in some form, given the capabilities of the systems involved and all the effort put into them to do exactly the opposite of what they do in game right now,

It is like giving the tanks a range limit of 1000m for no good reason other than to add suspense

  13. If I had to choose more missions/units to play around or better graphics I would go with the former in a CM game

Having said that, I would definitely welcome some improvements to fire effects and explosions, even more animations (IE: hand to hand combat, being blown away), a more realistic approach to building and destructive environment with tactical consequences

  14. "Back to the Wall" is brutal

What I did was move the sole T-64 you are given, together with all three BMP-2s to the right flank and leave the left flank basically to fend for itself

My logic was, I can`t defend both effectively, I might as well inflict as much damage as I can on one side, and for the most part it worked, the T-64 ended up with like 7 enemy vehicles knocked out, but only by defending from the internal lines, not at the front of the buildings, it survived, with some damage to tracks and optics and a rattled or broken moral

Anyway, almost everyone but a squad died or panicked on the left flank and on the right remnants were few, I had to retake a couple of buildings the Russians managed to occupied when reinforcements came

What I didn´t do, and maybe would have been better is give ground in an orderly fashion as suggested in the briefing, it should certainly take a better player than me to take the time to plan for all the proper coordination without killing everyone in the process and reloading a million times

  15. I´m not from the US nor Russia, so I don't have a "patriotic horse" in this race, but more than the lack of SPAA I would be worry for the small number of air superiority dedicated fighters (F-22s)

How many can be actually deployed to a foreign theater without degrading continental defenses? 20? 30? maybe 50?, How many on the air at one time? half of that?... even if they can see the enemy from take off to landing they still carry a finite number of AIM-120s

Of course there are other assets to close down runways and such, but if talking only about planes, the numbers seem worrisome, maybe they are not and the F-35 turns out to be a great air to air machine, I don´t know, will see when it enters service, until then you have 4 and 4.5 generation aircrafts on both sides with a few F-22s in the mix, perhaps it is enough given superiority in training, sensors and shared information

  16. Great videos

I´ll be waiting for the next part

When I played that mission, while I divided the forces in a different way (probably a less efficient way) I came to the same conclusion that dismounted and infiltration was the way to go and the positions I aimed for were similar, except I didn´t go so deep into the area occupied by enemy recon, can´t wait to see how it goes, hope your guys make it in one piece

It´s a very tough one, at least for me, expecting to play a simulation of  something like Kursk 2.0 (or would it be like 5.0 by 2017??), and this one forces you to change your mindset

  17. Negatron, it has "Detection" out to 8 KM, which is to say the sensor can locate something vehicle sized around 8 KM, but it won't be sure if it's a Tank, IFV, T-90 or M1A2 until around 2 KM. It's the diffrence between seeing something moving down the street and being able to tell if it's a woman worth getting a phone number from.

Maybe that should be standard by which all optics are measured

    Thanks for the answers!

  18. Its not 2KM at night its 2.5 and just because it identifies targets at that range doesnt mean it cannot engage, It has a recognition of 5KM

Ok, still it would be good to know what is the doctrine/training on this...shoot a 5km in the dark and hope for the best or identified first to conserve ammo...I guess much would depend on the situation, in the scenario presented by CMBS everything in front of you is an enemy, but in real life Ukraine/Georgia it wouldn't
