  1. I think scouting ability has a definite impact. You could test it with a quick battle - make a simple op with 2 opposing identical tanks in the editor & tweak the crews e.g. 100% vs 10% scouting on command stats & see how it goes.

  2. 'Steam Forum binaries' seems to be a 'Steam only' issue. A possible update to the way the game interfaces with Steam, but nothing to do with the game code (i.e. - no change to in-game behavior/functionality).

The SFS files update seem a bit more interesting, but I'm not sure what may have been updated. If this is just some textures or unit data or what.

Sorry I missed the "," from "According to Steam Forum, binaries & SFS are being updated." :o

Meaning game .bin etc rather than 'just' steam client interface etc.

Could all be Steam related though....

  3. I would really like to see more ToW, esp. a Cold War 'ToW Fulda Gap' or similar.

After seeing the promo video & the huge unit list I'd hoped Wargame European Escalation might have something to offer. Youtube shows otherwise. (at least as far as I'm concerned.)

I shan't be straying too far from my ToW collection anytime soon by the looks of things.

  4. ...a bit more thread hi-jacking!:P

As something of a footnote - I found this particularly telling -

Twenty years after the fighting in the

Hurtgen had ended, Time's "Man of the Year," that former

colonel of the 9th Infantry, now four-star General Westmore-

land, told Assistant Secretary of Defense John T. McNaugton

that "we are fighting in an escalating military stalemate." But

did his realistic assessment of the combat situation in Vietnam

extend any further than that? Did he draw the obvious conclu-

sion? Did he lay it on the line to the President? Did he threaten

to resign if something was not done about the situation?

Of course, he did not. Just like those other generals back in

1944-45, whom he as a frontline soldier had obviously cursed

more then once for being so knuckleheaded, he remained opti-

mistic. That year he told President Johnson, "In the final anal-

ysis, we are fighting a war of attrition, . . . Defeat is not a real

worry."7 All he needed was more bodies. Time and men. At the

then level of 470,000 troops in Vietnam, it would take him five

years to beat the enemy. Give him another one hundred thousand

troops and he would cut that time to three years. Add another

one hundred thousand bodies now and he could possibly guaran-

    tee final victory by mid-1969.

It was the same old story as that of the Hurtgen...

(ref p265-7 of Charles Whitings' book.)

sburke & Sirocco - Thanks for the book titles I shall look out for those. ;)

  5. With ref to comments by TrailApe & Michael Emrys -

It has to be said the class-system in the UK has 'always' encouraged the placement of 'Upper-Class Twits' in positions of command. The net result is a whole lot of avoidable errors both on & off the battle-field.

The best understanding I have gained of US Army Command activity in WW2 was the result of reading The Battle of Hurtgen Forest by Charles Whiting. That gave me some clear insight into what kind 'tactical thinking' could occur.

    ...just my dimes' worth. :)

  6. I hope the devs don't bin this series as it is one of the best there is. It can always be improved but there are so many great moments in the battles.

Just watched a US tank destroyer & a Pz IV simultaneously kill each other at close range. Wish the game had a video mechanism that allowed you to rove around afterwards watching all the little events you must miss when playing.:)

Looks like the cause of the slowdowns on newer rigs may have been identified at last. Can Windows dynamic boost + video drivers somehow kill the CPU affinities...?

Be interesting to see if the devs leave it to the players to fix the issue or whether they patch it now something that could be a starting point for debugging has been found.

  7. collisions - столкновения / коллизия ?

You mean - группы / коллекций?

I know this is 3d shell , one has to provide the "data sheet" to model interaction with game engine. Then it all has to be linked up & tested.

JSH added vehicles, so did the ToW2 Africa balance mod.

Not impossible, just not drag & drop.

  8. Seems to be OK to use -

    Use of downloaded materials

All of the downloadable 3D models available in 3D CAD Browser (3Dclub UK) catalog may be used free in your own or commercial projects. Downloaded 3D models may not be sold individually or provided for free to another parties.

Can contact them to make sure.

I was thinking of a straight 3ds to msh conversion (there are some free tools about) but started thinking about scaling....How does ToW define 'physical' unit size?

It must be possible to find out how to set different guns & arcs for multiple turrets etc. Rendering the animations of multiple turrets may be tricky I guess.

There are other formats available & lots of different models

Possibility for the Japanese Type 95 Ha-Go. Would make a nice Uchronic Japan vs Russia skirmish (re-igniting the early C20 conflict). :D

Not that we need more work of course... :P

  9. Yes really. Of the five new threads on this forum, three of them are mine, including this one. The other two threads are a complaint about the Steam version and another one wondering if this game is worth buying. The very few links I found were all broken. So I don't know where you are looking, but having to look in the archives to find things is a pretty good indicator that this game is on the way OUT.

As to games of this kind or ANY computer games, they are on the way out. Major PC game companies have been switching over to X-Box and other cartridge games for quite a while. A good example is Electronic Arts. They used to make all kinds of computer games. Not any more. Almost everything is for game systems now. A company has to be able to make a profit to stay in business. The only computer games that are selling are first person and role playing games.

As to people playing and modding this game all over the world...maybe. They are certainly keeping those mods to themselves. Doing a Google search brings up NOTHING for mods, other than the five mods on the Battlefront website. So these worldwide mod-makers must be some kind of underground cult.

Many folks buy a game to play it...not hack into it and be creative. I couldn't care less about the internal workings or creating things. I WOULD pay for an upgrade like the three items I mentioned in my first post. Game companies stay in business by making a profit. Users making mods doens't put any money in thier pockets. So lets try and steer this thread BACK ON TOPIC and post whatever changes or improvements you would like to see in the game, rather than turning this into a DIY thread.

OK, I get that you are all about statistically dubious opinions & inaccuracy

e.g. -When I say posts I don't mean threads, there are active posters talking about & playing this game.

    Bottom line -

I was suggesting the option of looking elsewhere when you aren't being fed by the devs.

Even 'big' sellers like Total War have users improving their base games.

It is a normal situation, not a conspiracy to hijack your thread.

  10. No new posts? Really?

I can access all those files so I know the links are fine.

Wargames are a niche market but the people that play them tend to be a committed community.

Enthusiasts learn the skills & take the time to develop/improve what they care about.

It isn't coincidence that BFC & 1C have produced games that get the enthusiast community involved in the creative process.

There are people playing & modding this series all over the world.

  11. Where are these mods located at? Quite honestly, I am not much interested in, nor do I have the time for, DIY mods. :)

Check my threads for D/L URLs.

Considering the quality of the fan mods (including increased accuracy & detail + new units) you are missing out on a lot of quality work by ignoring them.

  12. I suspect the 'easiest' way to get the units you want is via mods. There are some dedicated & skilled modders in the ToW community.

It is also possible to try making those mods yourself. A Jagdtiger could be a good start.

The possibility exists with ToW to make your own campaigns etc, Arzok & Gnasher have done some great stuff for ToW1.

Tartari is undertaking the mammoth task of importing ToW1 & 2 maps & matériel to ToW3.

I would like the devs to produce some WW2 content for the ToW3 engine but in the meantime we are lucky to have Tartari!

If 1C ultimately don't want to continue development of ToW they have at least provided some tools to allow the gamers to make some really great additions to the series content.
