  1. Thanks. Much appreciated. I was hoping Marines Module & v1.10 tweaked the performance / graphics for the MBP. Ready to get the "hard-goods".

Are you all running on your MBP display or driving an external monitor?

I should note my MBP is in "single display mode" driving an external: Apple 23" Cinema Display 1920 x 1200 at 60 Hertz. I can use this large monitor and CMSF's smaller scenarios are very playable. That is plenty of real estate to fill with a laptop. With all graphics options maxed in CMSF the game looks immersive and impressive to me! The problems occur with Antialias / Multisample: ON, a thread in Tech Support. *

I installed the free version of FRAPS on the MBP to measure FPS.

Regarding new nVidia drivers, what are you currently using on your MBP?

I am using NVIDIA 167.63 version in BootCamp. I tried an upgrade to 175.19, with the "modified INF" file but could not get it to install properly.

"... is it worth upgrading to Leopard just for newer Bootcamp vid drivers? Are they that much better for performance?"

Sorry I can't answer this. Maybe someone else can?

The 2.5 MBP came with Leopard and my older Tiger Macs are not Intel models so no BootCamp. I prefer Leopard OS features over Tiger. 'Snow Leopard' won't show until next summer. Maybe by then CMx2 will be out in OSX? With 'Snow Leopard' I suspect stability and performance increases (full advantage of multi-core CPUs and GPUs).

    CogNative

The summary of my MBP 'testing';)

The Intel Chipset Installer made no difference in the MacBook Pro.

I gave up on Antialias / Multisample: ON as Schrullenhaft noted "Antialiasing / Multisampling WILL draw additional power since it makes the GPU work harder (provides additional "load" with the multiple passes of textures)... Not a CMSF problem but worth noting.

Nvidia control panel's 3D Settings: After many hours of mucking around to find the sweet spot, I don't think the CP 3D settings do much to enhance the graphics on my MBP. I do have "Threaded Optimization" turned OFF, "Extension Limit" OFF, and "Triple Buffering" ON...set the Processor Affinity so that only one CPU is running CMSF. This may keep the MBP a little less hot for a while.

Another item in CMSF that helps graphics is setting 'Alt-W' to "Shadows OFF". The FPS goes up, you can even use Antialias / Multisample: ON a while longer before the 3D image freeze and audio BUZZ occurs. The downside is the ability to use upper, higher perspectives in the game is lost without shadows.

So w/o Marines Module & v1.10, the CMSF 1.08 Options, Antialias / Multisample: OFF, "Balanced" 3D Model Texture and Quality, makes the big difference in greater FPS. Good to know for folks playing RT CMSF... which is lots of fun.:D

  2. Any one have experience with the new Marines Module with v1.10 on a MacBook Pro?

The CM:SF Version 1.10 Feature list looks impressive especially Interface and Infantry.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. "...Western-connected educated class, it seems to me that they do in fact represent the aspirations of the general population, tribals aside."

Average Joe in Pakistan (much of the @ 2.45 million unemployed) should not be considered part of the "Western-connected educated class". This average Pakistani will suffer more than the usual lot in life with Asif Ali Zardari, our current most trusted president driving the bus.

    http://www.smh.com.au/

"Carnage: Pakistan's reality check", Mr Zardari gave a televised address after the blast in which he appealed for "all democratic forces" to help to save Pakistan. "Terrorism is a cancer in Pakistan. We are determined, God willing, we will rid the country of this cancer," he said.

    Now...

"Zardari warns US after border skirmish"... at the United Nations yesterday, Mr Zardari said Pakistan's military was firing "flares" to warn NATO helicopters about the location of the border. "You mean the flares," he replied when asked about the NATO accounts. "Sometimes the border is so mixed that they don't realise they have crossed the border."

"The border is very, very unclear, I know," Dr Rice told Mr Zardari.

"NATO is conducting its biggest and most complex operation in Afghanistan, where there are about 70,000 international troops, most of them deployed under the military alliance's banner."

When your trusted friends fire "flares" at you, and you have to duck and cover from your 'allies' as well as the Al-Qaeda and Taliban 'rebels' who are actively undermining the questionably legitimate government in a country that has "nuclear power" with dramatic internal turmoil....

I guess if Condi says it is OK we should be OK?;)

Maybe a great place to test the UCAV prototypes with such dramatic internal turmoil and all?

"Keeping AQ under siege is definitely a short term goal, but it's not where the main fight lies because it's expected to be eclipsed in importance one way or another."

Smart money is on "eclipsed in importance one way or another."

Impacts the Mac Book Pro. Will check if my MBP is in the big no-no group. Since it is a "work" machine I should not be playing games but... don't ell anyone and I won't.

"Seems ATI and nVidia colluded to control prices for a long, long time."

    "...price fixing on duff products..."

Maybe we should bail out nVidia & ATI as well?

700 Billion... just add a tad more for the video card vexing.

  5. US Confirms Raid Inside Pakistan Reply 09/24/08

Let me be clear. "...disengaged from the area COMPLETELY..." IMO, Will not happen.

IMO, In a perfect world, snatch, catch or otherwise neutralize BL (+) quickly then or yesterday get the Hell-Fire outta there. Our hard working and dedicated Military(+) should not be required to endure insincere, impossible 'orders' just to mark time for party/political policies of 'Great Satan' on their doorstep in the Global War on Terrorism.

USA citizens should care about the corrupt government in Pakistan primarily because the ingredients for Pakistan's own 9/11 equivalent with a follow on... revolution/coup, ensuing anarchy and the "Let me step in to provide ORDER!" by current, 'sub-prime' but legit, governmental members, is very unhealthy for the world and eventually the USA. These "officials" affiliated with AQ agenda don't even need a vote... emergency powers and all.

"So if enough average Pakistanis get mad, Wahabbist Islam is a very rational solution to the problem of endemic corruption. True the average Pakistani is no religious nut, but if he gets sick enough of the thieving government bureaucrats he might start listening to a cleric preaching application of the shariah law to all, equally."

BD's nailed it, IMO. Extend this to an emergency, Islamic theocracy applying their order in Pakistan and their "security" over Pakistani nuclear devices. Let you develop that scenario(s). Makes the CMSF game look pretty tame... well maybe w/o Marines

The only Pakistanis I know (not friends) are MDs and Taxi drivers. Energetic, entrepreneurial but all lament official corruption.

The updated Mongol option, "... kill them all and rule their mountains and sheep in peace" will only occur if we all use "mind altering" products from the brave new Afghan state...;) NUKES are not a deterrence nor an answer but a holocaust end game. Please let us all die in peace w/o this chaser.

LLF, I respectfully disagree. IMO, Pakistan is prime candidate for Al Qaeda domination via the 'sub-prime' but presently legit governmental "officials" ready to step in that emergency powers vacuum. The USA can not stop it. The best we can do is nail the 9/11 nasty(s) and ....

Please, I hope I am proven wrong. USA has many more internal challenges ahead and the $700B is only a sign of things to come. Look at how masterfully we are mangling this! No Bullet Holes... yet.

    Peace, CogNative

Gunny Huntarr, Is their a unmanned U.S. aircraft target practice? We need some 10 rings and get the hell-fire outta there.:D

  6. "...disengaged from the area COMPLETELY..."

Need a mind altering, cognitive transformation of the highest order for this to materialize. Any Bets?

re: "long term ramifications", check out TIME article, "The Central Front", 9/22/09 Aryan Baker. Short but clear.

Try to explain to fellow (USA) citizens why they should care about a corrupt government in Paki-Land with 2.45 million people unemployed (70% of the population) ... 2/3 live in poverty, and only 6% can read, but they have nukes and all the ingredients for revolution and nuclear power grab that will happen. It is a hard sell especially when your own Country is asking for a 700+ billion dollar loan to delay the inevitable economic cluster flux.

Did this recently at Criminal Court as we observed our wheels of Justice grind through a simple "aggravated battery" aka ... attempting to shoot 3 people while reloading your 15 round clip, YMMV in your hood .... but I digress.

My fellow (USA) citizens could care less about Pack-It-Land or their issues. Most folks have other pressing needs.

IMO: We (USA) should care because our people (US Military+) are being dragged into a shadow war in some of the least neighborly hoods on the planet with an almost impossible mission as a daily ... watts dat goal again?

"a few decades to really matter.."

Al-Qaeda in FATA is currently ... right now ... in a excellent position to watch (maybe push) Asif Ali Zarddari into default. The nuclear power grab ensues.

"Or we just nuke the whole place. See Japan 1945 for precedent"

When WE have a 'clear and present danger' ... "Great Satan" drops the atomic hammer... IMO.

See: Annihilation from Within: "The Ultimate Threat to Nations" by Fred Charles Iklé

    Peace,

Cogs*Natively ... what the hell do i know?

PS: I suspect our own unruly internal issues will be much more challenging in the shorter term than 'Pack-It-Land' so... rearrange the brain.... mind altering, cognitive transformation of the highest order... Off to work on this issue.

  7. I'm a true believer in Capitalism, despite it's obvious warts and puss filled boils. We aren't in this business to make money (we would be fools if that were the case) ..."

Or... an investment bank, a brokerage firm, an insurance company or maybe a "community activists?:D

"We do want to get fair compensation for our labor."

    Sounds fair to me.

"If we don't deliver you guys won't buy in sufficient numbers to keep us doing what we do. Without the corruption of the distribution system interfering, it's a pretty fair arrangement."

    No Entertainment OPEC. Fair enough.

"Thanks to the Internet we can do that since we're bypassing the cartels that used to control the destiny of little companies like us. But it also means we can't hid behind endcaps, spiffs, channel stuffing, and slick marketing campaigns to compensate for quality products."

Quality products! Substance that is (or is made to do = patched) what you sell it as? That could be an economic and political system that may not need $700 Billion bail out.

M1A1TC, "I remember when I got the manual with the CD inside, and it was bent by the postal office pretty badly.."

Same scenario but my CMBB (Mac) was snapped in half by the USPS.. a floppy CD. Replaced by BFC w/o any hassles

Quality Service & Quality products & Quality Entertainment... in an economic and political system controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

Wishful thinking for much of the world so .... "It's nice to know that we didn't waste a lot of time for nothing."

    Cheers!

  8. Thanks as well for the prompt and fair response.

"Personally, I would like existing Windows CM users to be able to use the Mac version without having to repay. Technically speaking it is a different product, however in this case I think we should try and bend the rules if we can."

That would be fantastic! I am ready to invest in Marines Module asap to supplement the CMSF 'fun fix'.

M32 Six Pack ...Marines have some so they should be good?

Like Thomas, "...the hassles of dual-boot and running Windows via boot-camp..." are an irritating inconvenience but not enough for me sack the PC play time yet.

"The scope and power of the CMX2 system is really starting to become apparent to me."

FLASH hit me shortly after purchasing CMSF. I don't boot up the CM1 (MAC) games now unless work requires my divided attention.

  9. "...I'm waiting for the Marine module to arrive.."

Yes and Version 1.10 as well but what you have now PT are are some very pleasant map views. The Marines should be right at home descending on your small villages and towns based on what Steve posted below.

"The difference is that the Marines are "denser" (hehe) than their Army counterparts. Instead of having 9 soldiers move into a house to check out what's in the fridge, where the booze is hidden, use the toilette (hopefully using scented hand soap after!), etc... the Marines go in with 13 men to do exactly the same thing".... "Map size can probably be a bit bigger with Version 1.10 in general, though, because of various performance tweaks that have been made since v1.08. Since that is a game engine function it applies equally to any forces used and not just the Marines."

"I reworked the map to expand the village and I'm going to make it a late afternoon action instead."

The dusk battles can be quite impressive visually with the long shadows and dimming light. Noticed this yesterday mucking around with the Scenario Editor battle times.

"Dynamic artillery and air power..." Now we are talking pyrotechnics pleasures.:D

  10. The Cpl. S. expressed exactly my #1: Named maps to choose from ... supplemented with a "Random" option for when you don't care what the map looks like. The Louch had some of the same angles as well.

CM games,1-2-x, are entertainment for me providing amusement, enjoyment, a momentary escape from the state of things as they actually exist. Reality is often not as fun as shopping at Wars R Us! Cherry Picking can be recreational and ridiculous = a diversion. Go for it but Picking Terrain trumps Picking Fruit.

Thanks Steve & all BFC for keeping an open mind and your business open.

  11. Recently installed XP Pro SP3. Parallels went south then died.

Unlicensed CMSF w/o a problem. Wiped the XP Pro Boot Camp partition.

Did a fresh XP Pro SP2 & "Booty Camp" 2.1 install.

    Re-licensed CMSF w/o a problem.

    Upgraded to XP Pro SP3.

I played some smallish scenarios last PM for @ 2 hours with CMSF Settings below w/o any 3D image freeze, audio BUZZ issues! When the audio / graphic corruption occurred they were less loud and appeared to resolve faster!

Is SP3 an important improvement / add on for the Mac folks in Boot Camp?

Mr. VonWebb ... Who told you what?

See Antialias / Multisample: ON - image quality?

    http://www.battlefront.com/community/showthread.php?t=82707

My issues are mainly poor video quality.

Are you certain that the MacOsX version right around the corner might fix this?

CogNative is enjoying the smaller scenarios on my MBP via Booty Camp.

Try the 'test drive', see if it works for you (entertainment value) and decide.

Analogy answer IMO: If you sold FISH. You got fresh XP fish now and a Sardine Module! You are (entertainment value) hungry. Buy it all now. Feed the need.

If you were the BFC Fish Vendor. If you had a customer ask... well the fish I ate for 6 months was good but now I want a sweet deal on the fish you caught after 6 months of hard fishing. They might correctly give you a taste at the counter but.. you buy the freshly caught fish... for full price.

W/O a doubt ... CMSF is fun... frustrating in MBP via Booty Camp but I am not being flip.

Yes setting 'Alt-W' to "Shadows OFF" helps.. for a while on my computer.

"Changing the AA setting does not make any difference."

It does decrease the 'jag hags' a bit on my computer but setting AA to 'ON' kills the game, literally locks it up for me. Too bad because CMSF looks great for the time it works.

"adjusting the card settings through the nvidia control panel?"

I have played with ALL the nvidia control panel settings.... for the MacBook Pro. Essentially it has little effect on my MacBook Pro.

Smaller "Byte Battles" allow me to play CMSF enjoyably ... visually that is... even with AA set to 'ON'... till it locks up.

"The most common circumstances would involve infantry units ..."

You have a reasonable addition petition Ken. Wouldn't limiting the improvement to "infantry units" decrease the coding conundrum for BFC?

Lethaface: "I like the idea of having more control in certain situations over what kind of weapon is fired at a given target (and/or which not), given it has been targeted by the user...Click 'Special Weapons', designate, boom."

Moon - Administrator "It might be hard to get it on these boards otherwise. You'll either get fans or haters (with an agenda?), with very little in between."

Moon is spot on, IMO. I have all 3 - CMx1 games. Great Fun but compared to CMSF 1.08, MarkEzra hit the 10 ring. "Yes...This game is worth the price of admission... I took off all the old CM games from my PC...I just couldn't go back to playing them. Love them though I did they are the past."

I still have all 3 - CMx1 games on my old G4 but... why bother? CMSF is now a much better game than the CMx1 games.

Elmar Bijlsma "I am playing more in RT. Just so much more flexible and hands on."

Even with the graphic limitations of my MacBook Pro issues, RT-CMSF is a HOOT!

MikeyD nails it ... IMO "Game is not lopsided in favor of the Americans. It simulates real-world and real world is lop-sided in favor of the Americans."

I make NO posturing re: my gaming experience. Many on these boards have substantially greater experience in game-play. I have NO game development experience.

Bottom Line: If you are interested in an entertainment & replay value .. Buy CMSF. I have gotten my money's worth in entertainment value+.

    CogNative

  16. Thank you again for the Mac feedback.

I think Steve may be correct re: PPCs "will likely be too slow to play CM very well." The only reason I keep the old G4 Mac around is I have all three CMx1 MAC Version titles and need something to play on them. Even with the current time-wasting BootCamp OS shuffle, CMSF has made the G4 & CMx1 more a memory than a contemporary challenge. CMSF offers a much better game for me than the old CMx1 games.

As long as I use smaller game files and more moderate graphics settings, my current MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz works satisfactorily with CMSF V1.08 . I have some video issues noted in the tech support section '"Antialias / Multisample: ON" but these are not a CMSF software issue as best I understand. The limitation is more with my laptop GPU processor: GeForce 8600M GT with 512 MB memory.

I hope the Mac/Intel version of CMSF will prove more efficient, allowing better larger game files, more advance graphics settings with good RT - FPS.

  17. Update: I was able to create, yet again, the 3D image freeze, a very loud audio BUZZ issues in the MacBook Pro.

Adding "Syrope Mod v1.1" was the culprit today. I reset (decreased quality) to Anisotropic filtering: 2X and Antialiasing - Setting: 2X w/o any graphic improvements. Same problems experienced. I was able to play CMSF by setting the in game CMSF option to :Antialias / Multisample: OFF.

It appears that ANY larger files (Scenarios / Campaigns / Modifications) may overload the current MacBookPro GPUs?

Those of you who are 'GPU Gurus' please chime in as I am stuck with a visually basic (playable) version of CMSF with simple scenarios on the current MacBookPro.

    Hope this Mac information helps.

I have to agree with a recent CMSF-Mac version post. As much as I would enjoy the CMSF Marines Module... it may not be a functional MacBook Pro option? I purchased all the Mac versions of CM1 and would generously support the Mac versions of CM2.

    CogNative

BTW: Syrope Mod v1.1 Description:Very good looking MOD and must be an enormous amount of hard work by El_Terrifico. "a terrain retexture to give the game a European look."

  18. Update: I was able to create the 3D image freeze, a very loud audio BUZZ issues in my MacBook Pro shortly after my post last night. As noted the scenario file sizes I used to test the 'fix' were @ 900 KB in size.

I got 'cocky' and opened "Hold the Line V3 Elite Ed.btb" @ 6.4 MB file size. The scenario loaded OK. I issued a few orders and hit GO. Within @ 30" the 3D image freeze, audio BUZZ issues appeared. This time they were so bad I had to use Task Manager to exit CMSF. I was able to reopen CMSF and play the original scenarios w/o 3D image freeze, audio BUZZ issues.

I assume my MBP video setting work for all the CMSF original size scenarios <1MB.

It appears the larger files may overload the GPU?

    Hope this helps.
