  1. That's great and makes sense, but in the Documentary Video linked by Adam they stop in the wide open when they know enemies are present, and decide to shoot it out with Taliban who are taking shots at them from behind cover (see video at 35:20 and again at 38:40 for example). Does this mean that the Pathfinders are not following their own doctrine, or is something else going on that we're not understanding.

Well soldiers shouldn't cluster either. But they do. I've seen documentary of Royal Marines doing it and enemy wasn't longer than 100-150 meters away fortified in buildings. They even got RPG-7 or other loud projectile flying over them but that didnt' have effect (it seemed like they didnt' even register whole thing). Grenadier walking relaxed to spot, preparing his shot while stading clearly visible, taking shot and calmly walking away. Took about 10 seconds.

Looks like absurd thing when enemy is so close and can open fire anytime at them from buildings, but i guess they are enough experienced to tell the truth.

  2. I bet a Finn wrote that and you know they can't be trusted. I bet reindeer meat has more cholesterol than whale blubber. How else would the Lapps be able to survive in arctic cold?

Because of heavy drinking and never taking shower (sweating in sauna is fine thou). Those same things keeps mosquitos away at summers.

  3. An added bonus is they would not have insurgents and guerillas trained in their equipment and doctrine in the more volatile border regions.

If i recall correctly (and info i've had is correct) Chechens didn't receive combat training in Red Army. They all were trained into support roles, like engineers and supply. And they didnt' receive firearms training of any kind, they didnt' have firearms given to them atall in army. So it isn't necessary to make professional army to evade then risks breeding insurgents, and professional army itself isn't capable to out-line insurgency. During Russia era this might have changed as slavic white guys are not interested in military duty but try to make everything to evade it, so less appealing ethnic minorities might have had change for firearms and combat training. What i've read and seen of russian military i'm not supprised evasion of draft, it's harsh place to be for people who has got used to better and doesn't have problem to say "screw you and you stupidities. I'm off". General problem in west as well.

Russia already should be professional army to great degree, i believe first estimation was 2008 or 2007. Still due some reasons they are not. I believe they haven't chosed yet what is best road for them to take and there is strong supporting sides for both conscritption and professional force and it's not certain which one in the end prevails. War in Georgia might change general attitude in ranks of those who makes the choosing. Besides most problem with-in Russias military service is harsh conditions of service. Rookies used as hookers, high suicidical rate (altought most might be murders and manslaughters actually), beathing (one guy lost his manly things because of this last year!), bad food, 'soldiers' mothers'-organisation to inform all this etc. All-voluntary force ain't much doing better for that if service conditions and reputation of Red Army are not getting better, they (general-staff) just ends up wondering from where the hell they manage to get all those recruits they need on annual basis.

  4. The Marines can put out a vastly higher number of grenades too, you may be witnessing the difference between 1 grenade and several.

I play turn-based nowdays (thanks to blue bar!) and could check it right away and it's clearly individual grenade which has done it.

I'd hope that we could get more information of weapons and ammo which squads are having. For example Syrians with RPG-7 and tens of different warheads is bit messy. This 40mm issue is same, who has MOUT-killers and who doesn't... Ofcourse i would never bother to check them anyways :D But i got my change to whine.

  5. I've seen few very bad things happening to my Syrian infantry if they receive 40mm grenades from Marines. Is that HEDP more useful against buildings in CMSF? As it seems to cause much bigger damage to infantry. I rarely have seen bad causalities when US Army guys puts 40mm into building, but Marines seems to be capable to wipe out half of squad with single 40mm grenade (if they are packed into small space. Or have i been just in bad luck?

It would be logical to be able to cause more wreck in houses as some walltypes (brick is one of them if i remeber correctly) can form shotgun effect with secondary fragments from HEDP's penetration powerz.

  6. Secondbrooks,

Are you saying you think it is reasonable that you would be able to locate an enemy down at an 8x8 area of uncertainty after merely *hearing* them fire 5-6 single shots from a range of 300m? That is what happened. But it wasn't merely a "?", it was a full spot, in under a minute. No, I don't think this is the answer we're looking for. I think it is more likely the game just needs work.

Hard to say so my answer is: i might, i might not. If forest is dark enough muzzle flashes might give positions away even from those ranges... That doesnt' mean that shooter himself is spotted by he has marked his location.

[one can skip if he likes. Nothing very important]

I myself for example have been in similar situation during exercise where i had perfect spot (could use small sprunces as visual cover, and crunch behind top of ridge to gain cover) to take shots at heads and shoulders of opponents from range of 200 meters. I gave away few short bursts (6-10 rounds spent) at one head. Next thing i knew was that my vests were signaling about me being shot at and shot going near miss. Other times i managed to control area from similar situation and remain concealed from 100-150 meters (opponents didn't have glue where i was, they just knew that when they move on ridge i will shoot). Once we managed to see figures of opponents thru trees, distance was maybe 100-150 meters, forest in between that distance. During same firefight one guy crawled inside long grass to 30-40 meters from us. Once we advanced at enemy's base in forest with very low visibility of dense young sprunce-forest, i spotted very well hidden enemy (maybe he slightly moved young sprunce i can't tell, something just moved) and i took few snap shots at him and scored a hit. From 10-20 meters, him not knowing about me (i'm quite a sneaker clearly as they were waiting for us to come ).

[/one can skip if he likes. Nothing very important]

And list goes on and hopefully you dont' try to make any conclusions other than random factor are always effecting. Reason why atleast i cant' say is CMSF in right or wrong path when it comes to spotting.

EDIT: Yeah. I'm not trying to pretend to be veteran in combat, as i'm not. Most of those examples are with MILES-kit, and there is one paintball example as it seems to be appropriate (the last one). Just trying to bring "wisdom" i've gathered along the road.

EDIT2: Yeah. And there could long lull moments before and after those examples. Me just scratching my passive arse (with left hand, right is holding weapon) and not seeing or doing anything other than trying to spot opponents, which don't show themselves up.

  7. They couldn't be spotted even using the camera and zoom. But the game gave my team a full spot (not a "?") in less than a minute. The enemy fired maybe 5-6 shots in total, all single aimed shots.

Sound is loud when rifle says BANG. Question marks seems very suitable for situation. There even might be muzzleflashes because forest might be dark enough. But sound should be enough for question mark. Also even small movement might reveal location. I think atleast i do spotting things so that when i hear something i focus my eyes to direction from where i think sound came from. If producer of sound moves even bit i might catch that. Sure i haven't got real lead shot at me, so that situation might be bit different and i might focus my eyes to soil... From very close distance.

    Bit longish example:

I remember one instance when i was with my platoon were forming platoon's base of operation (we were practicing of fighting in "querilla" style) and we idiots used ready path thru wide open marsh surrounded by forest to get there while hauling thousands of rounds, tents, food, etc to base area.

We hadn't loaded any blank-rounds to our mags yet as we didnt' know that exercise already had kicked running. Idea was to fill mags and belts while getting into location of base as we thought that is how higher up wanted us to proceed with exercise. I was just in middle of marsh as Opfor opened fire from maybe 150-200 meters away. I saw all 6 of them (or their muzzleflashes and bit of body's silhouette to be exact) at same time i dropped tent's equipments to ground and strated to fall onto my foot steps to get cover from lasers "ripping" air. I knew exactly where they were immediatly... Only if my LMG's belt would have had ammo  To be honest opponents weren't very smart them selves. They were firing from standing position so whole marsh could see their location, maybe they were just welcoming us to exercise (as i dont' remeber any casualities from that fire) :D

Sure blank-adapters we used have tendensy to make muzzleflashes more loud in audio and in visual sense, but still.

  8. Thermal Imagers can discern a difference to 1/10 of a degree Celcius, if I recall correctly, so they are still effective in hot weather.

TOW2's thermal (maybe same as M1 Abrams had/has) which weighted about 10 kilograms has 0.3 degree in Celsius as minimum (footprint in snow should be visible for short while... i never tested it). I remember one light few kilograms weighting hand held thermal camera which i had opportunity to test might have had smaller 0.1 or 0.2 degree and smaller zoom, but it was very much okay.

  9. Oh damn! I've understood that this baked scenario things totally wrong. I though it's idea was just to throw player into situation to which scenario desginer has already played that particular scenario but player gets control of all units.

Is there user made baked scenarios available? As far as i can understand CMSF doesn't deliver single one. Would be interesting to see how it works.

  10. it sounds like, "My cat is too tight :) Yes?

however the "Meine" is absolutely correct, the other spelling is rather off, if you want to say what i think you want to say ;)

Yes. That was what i'm after. German is said to be pretty hard language to learn because of it's complex rules in grammar and by my friends that sentence holds some important basic rules of German grammar. I can't tell is it true, but it was enough funny to stick into my head.

  11. As for the MGS only being useful for blasting houses at a distance, that's as expected, because that is what it is intended for. It isn't a tank destroyer.

If anything, 0.5" HMG and 40mm GMG are far too effective against buildings in game, especially thick-walled middle-eastern structures.

Yeah and that is why it seems to be pretty much useless. Basically blind turkey needing escort and red carpet to do things which other can do almost as well but with less care taking :D

But it's 105mm has nice sound.

  12. Wasn't M-10 a Wolverine? Not lightly armored but moderate or bit below. And had open top turret.

    Hellcat was lightly armored.

I still dont' like MGS, it useful just in few things, mostly blasting houses at distance. In CMSF i find .50cal and 40mm do just the same thing. Taking more time yeah, but then again no fear of friendly fire. And ammo last longer. + Visibility is so poor that it seems to be mostly loosing "spotting-race" against everything, like BMPs.

  13. If your simulating 1-1 infantry then you should aim to simulate 1-1 formations, wedge, extended line, columns, diamonds and so on. Does it matter, certainly, in CM-1 you could imagine, in SF 1-1 you get what you see. Walk down a city street in SF and they gaggle along, walk down the same street it real life and then your guys split left and right and do proper infantry drills.

I dont mind not having the last, but not having real life infantry formations in 1-1 does take the realism out of it a bit.

You can do MOUT drills in CMSF, it just requires micromanagement: split teams and put them to advance in different sides of street, messing with cover arces, pauses and facings gives them more realistic finishing touch. Ofcourse in company/batallion sized battle that might not be very interesting option :D But personally i'd rush from house to house in CMSF as there is no restrictions in using buildings. Using whole squads as i hate to micromanage.

Infantry as it has been packed into small space, in my mind, doesn't require such good modelling of formations, be it cloumn, wedge, line they probably will be able to respond to threaths pretty much equally still. Even more if shooting thru backs of own guys without harming them is there.

Ofcourse it ain't prefect. There are situation where i'd like them to take line/wedge as they hunt thru woods but they keep column. Or in assault against MG, where i would like them to take line, but they take column. I've seen single MG burst taking out several guys. As TheFightingSeabee puts it. Ofcourse if using always split teams this can be countered somewhat well... Well for poor Syrians it ain't option. But i can always think that squadleader or platoon leader wasn't most bright and they desrved it :)
