I think the goal is not to simulate the workdays of a division commander, because CM is not good for that. The player operates in a god-like mode, sees everything, commands everyone.

Well, if someone paid that little coding personally to BFC (plus the compensation for the changes in their business plan) then we (or he) can have a Linux version. Everything negotiable.

I like to play big battles of this size, it's absolutely playable. (Well, you get a cup of coffee and plot for an hour). Maybe I'll try this setup in my next game.
I guess one side needs an additional force if this is planned for an attack/assault mission.

The random maps issue was mentioned earlier. They said there was a chance for a public map format, so 3rd party quickmap generators can be written by fans. But this was long ago.

thanks for the answer...what really interests me is the _backward_ skipping ability of the replay system. Is it possible with small increments, or it can only jump back to the beginning of the replay?

So i guess you mean, that the VISUAL representation of the turn is not calculated prior, but the results are ofcourse.
So we have to watch the action turn in realtime, the graphics engine receives and stores all data, and afterwards we can rewind, ff how we like it. Is that correct?
I don't mind staring at the ceiling for a minute before every turn, but I really hope the animation replay works the same as in CMx1. Or better.

I don't think Starcraft and Battlefront share the same core audience (I can barely compare the two in my mind). You select a HQ unit at setup, and in its menu there will be an item 'set flag'. Activate this then click near a flag, which will turn to gray.

Bullet trajectories were not simulated in CMx1 but they will be in CMx2. Even more, ricochets, wall penetrations etc.

What Misereor is talking about is the military decision process revolving around a single decisive point. You analyze your mission carefully, then you come up with a decisive point. Then you assign purpose and tasks to each and every unit of yours. You can read more on this in the armchair general, Tactics 101. (Written by army professionals, not fellow wargamers)
Basically, every unit has to serve the Main Goal, no random actions. But they have to attain that via sound tactics, and they should be given the appropriate tasks. Knowing proper tactics advised by JasonC and others is a must.
I think there are other decision methods as well (not decisive point oriented), but probably this one is the easiest. Basically, your units have a job to do, they don't just kill enemies in the field whenever they have the ocassion. IMO this not necessarily means 'controlling' the battlefield or having always the initiative.

Welcome to the best tactical lever wargame currently on the market.
You can buy digital downloads directly from battlefront.com. I suggest buying CMBB first then CMAK, though I might be biased. CMx2 will be a very different product, and isn't about the ww2 era.
You'll find plenty of user made scenarios, but the game will ship with about ~30 scenarios and 5-6 campaigns.
As I recall the user interface and the performance of the demo is almost the same as the real version. This is an old game, your config must be enough for it. Don't worry about the strange user interface, soon it will be natural to you
