  1. I'd really like to see the engine incorporate the ability to allow a little less micromanagement for those who want it that way.  So, the player could issue basic orders to a platoon HQ to secure a specific location and then the subordinate units would be subject to the TacAI, although you could set parameters around urgency, loss tolerance etc.  However, the player would still retain the ability to micromanage as deeply as they like, so they could issue orders to individual units directly if they felt the need.  Those familiar with the Command Ops system will know where I'm coming from here, for those that are not I hope I explained myself adequately.

Of course, that would be a huge amount of effort to implement and to make work correctly and a large departure from the dna of the CM series - too much probably, but if implemented I think it opens up the system to a whole bunch of new players.

  2. Oh, that's a shame.  Works with all CMx1 titles for me - sorry to hear that.  The DDraw dll is definitely in the same folder as  CombatMission2.exe?  I heard another program called dgVoodoo2 also works but I didn't try it because DDraw did so well.  I'm using the CDV retail trilogy disk version, running a new NVidia GTX 1060 card, the latest experimental DDraw release.

For info, this is my DDRaw log:

Mechanically they are still really solid. Not much has changed in the newer games from the earlier games when it comes to control scheme. AI I enjoy more on the older one. Map Generator is brilliant. Graphics are a bit archaic, but they do their job and don't hinder the experience too much. One thing is that fog does not function. Nvidia used to use a thing called fog tables to render fog. They have stopped supporting it. That is what the original CM games used. If anyone knows how to fix that I would be grateful, but I don't know of any fix for it.

See my posts at the bottom of the thread here here - hope it helps.

DC Barbarossa (Matrix) is a very innovative (East Front) computer game in that, while it seems to be similar to the previous conventional operational-strategic games in the Decisive Campaigns series, this new version is also a role playing game(!)  You are put in charge of many of the logistics issues that require you to maintain good relationships with both subordinates and superiors (including Der Fuhrer).  You have to make difficult decisions that may please or displease these other commanders, who in turn can help or hinder what you are trying to accomplish.  Highly recommended.  I hope the developers continue to improve this aspect of their system.

The DC series was already good but Barbarossa is, and I'm not prone to bandying a term like this about for nothing, a masterpiece.  I think that system with the player as Ike trying to deal with difficult characters above and below in the chain of command would be a hell of a lot of fun, I hope it's the next step they take with it.

  5. I have asked this question about AI control of individual countries over on the official SC3 forums on several occasions, Hubert and Bill have answered plenty other questions there lately but not even a hint of a response to mine.  I think you can take it to mean that this is not one of the new features, sadly.  Also, in the box art reveal, this was said " Take control over either the Axis or the Allies, while directing the efforts of each nation belonging to your alliance."  I'm disappointed. it was my most hoped for thing in SC3 I must admit.

  6. Thanks Hubert. That's fine, I'll probably buy the bundle when I receive my next pay cheque (trying to impose some much needed financial discipline here - I have a small monthly 'treats' budget which is currently exhausted :D).

Loving the demo though. I am interested in WW1 and have respectable knowledge of it so all is good.

I'm bigging up the game to anyone who will listen, my closest friend has got hold of GC:Gold now too and I'm working on some others ;)

  7. Hi all,

I purchased SC2 back in 2008 but never got into it at all (lack of time for games of any sort sadly). I reinstalled it on my laptop recently and also picked up Global Conflict Gold & AoD.

Wow, I've been missing out badly. The game is just awesome, and I'm not the sort to use such an adjective casually. I haven't felt like this about a game for a long time, so thanks to all the guys at Fury for that.

On to my main point though - I really like what I see of the SOE campaign for Breakthrough. Now, I don't have it - I will get it in time anyway, the WW1 content looks pretty cool - but can't justify purchasing right now having just bought Gold. Is SOE exclusive to Breakthrough, or is there a version available or at least being developed for GC:Gold/AoD? From browsing the Repository I guess the answer to the former is no - I've downloaded the Fast Play version, which is great but I want the big one too :D.

Like I say, the answer won't affect whether or not I buy the WW1 version , just when ;)

  8. I am most interested in seeing what a pack looks like. Since we have seen both Base games and modules, I would like to see what is to be the norm for a pack. I for one loved CMAK and fighting in dust in the desert. I am looking forward to the expansion of CMFI and a good pack would hold me over until bigger things (EF and MG) come along.

I speak for myself only, of course, but if a "pack" for CMFI was released that contained CW forces (just OOBs, maybe a few scenarios to make it work and QB maps as an extra but nothing else) for Husky alone, I'd be happy enough. The battle for Sicily was over a month long and, contrary to what some would have you believe, pretty eventful.

Now, pricing for 'packs', that's a different matter entirely. Depends on content I guess. Inany event, if it has CW forces in it, I'll buy it :D

  9. We had to wait years for BO plus a couple more for BB. Compared to that, BFC nowadays is releasing material at breakneck speed

    Michael

A very good point, and one that is easily forgotten. I suppose the only difference was that, back then, when one of the new titles appeared you got the "theatre in a box" thing and it kept you occupied for years. CMx1 games were astonishing in the richness of their content. Seriously, you could have two PBEMs going concurrently - one set during Operation Compass, another during Operation Olive, and that was just CMAK - one CD that cost £25 or whatever (brand new!). If you've got all the CMx1 titles, they very nearly cover the entire war on the Western Front (more so given that CMAK can actually do a decent job of some of the France 1940 battles). The value for money aspect of CMx1 was too good to be true!

CMx2 should end up achieving something similar, just in a different way. I probably wouldn't have said that before CMFI appeared, it proved that they can work on many things at once, if you were inclined to doubt. BFC didn't meet the "base game every year, module every six months" thing but you've got to feel they're on the move now. All going according to plan, by the end of this year, we'll have covered WF June- late September 1944, EF 1944-45 and Italy 1943 (and quite probably more) and Something *N*ice whatever that is (Dragoon?). That's just WW2 - for those that want it, there's plenty more in the modern arena to come too.

  10. Sadly, I seriously doubt we'll ever see North Africa again in the Combat Mission franchise.

Given CMx2's much smaller timescales for each title, I dream of an Operation Crusader with the new engine (want Matilda IIs, NZ/SAF inf and the few Australians left at Tobruk). Never say never, of course (only BFC can do that :D), but reading between the lines it'll probably remain a dream. CMAK will have to do, I think.

  11. The end of the article promises Combat Mission 4 - The Blitzkrieg Battles. Vaporware. :D

That was an interesting read. I've never seen it before so thanks for posting.

In more detail, Charles actually said:

Plan ahead. Gamers always want to know what we're working on next, so I'll tell you. Combat Mission 2 will take us to the Russian front, from 1941 to 1945. Combat Mission 3 will focus on battles in North Africa and the Mediterranean, and Combat Mission 4 take place during the Blitzkrieg years of the early war, from 1939 to 1940. We may go beyond that, but we have no firm plans yet.

Such a shame it never happened, but things moved on I guess. I still think it's impressive that, apart from CM4, BTS/BFC made good on their promises. You hear that sort of thing from developers frequently but it never actually happens. Credit where it's due and all that...

  12. I'm 28 - noted the CMBO development and demo release but only played it in September 2001 when forced to do so by a friend. Needless to say, I regretted not having played it sooner, but I was grateful not to have missed out any longer.

I play, and by that I mean any one of the CMx1 (even now) or CMx2 titles, at the very least once a month via LAN with either the same friend or another we converted along the way.
