  1. Hey Rambo, Yeah I've heard Dragon is top banana over at Buntaland, they are all routing for him over there so lets see. Not sure if I can afford to be as daring with mad commando stuff against him as I was against you. As as Dragon beat catacol who beat you to get here then I'm really up against. faced some good players so far but this is my first big name "seed" opponent.

my uber super ultra strategy will be saved for the final in the unlikely event I get there.

Amadeus - Bio update. I am 34, from the Lake district in the UK but live in California. I'm a physicist / laser spectroscopist who now works as a manager at a Laser company in Silicon Valley. Proud father of a beautiful 2 year old girl. dont have time to play any other wargames really, my interest in WW2 history really coming from listening to my Grandad who was in the BEF and later in the Desert rats. He served at Dunkirk, El Alamein and Monte Cassino.

I'll give some AAR updates as we go along. No mirror stuff for the semi, ain't got the time.

  2. Victor played well but I tried a new strategy I haven't used before and it turned into a spectacular success. Axis really were in an unstoppable position by summer 41. I wont got into details right now as I may want to try something similar again in the tournament. once I am knocked out/Win then I will give AAR on the more dramatic parts.

No need to insult Victor, I honestly don't believe Allies position was winnable from there.

  3. No time for full AARs, still early in both games. I'm turning up the pressure in China in game against Rafa but he's using terrain really well , holding out and still holds foochow, my only hope is his large losses there will allow me to push to the north. Guderain's France attack was early and aggresive but he extended his LV1 tanks too close to coast and away from Luftwaffe fighter cover. BEF landed behind his lines (French navy hold belgian port despite high losses so there's maybe hope they can escape) and he lost both panzers :)

  4. Ant,

British marines had small but very significant roles in the firts half of the war. This was for the simple reason that they came under the Admiralty's command and thus were Sir Winston's personal Army. Sir John French in charge of the much larger BEF reported to the the French allied command. Thus if the British wanted to do something small and independently the Royal Marines who were extremely mobile and politically available so got to do it.

Their power was not in numbers or fighting spirit. simple mobility. they could be landed anywhere the Royal navy was dominant ie anywhere in the world with a coast except the Baltic or black sea) in sharp contrast to the slow big battalions. without Royal marine landing in Belgium in Autumn 1914 it is likely that many of the channel ports would have been cut off but advancing gemrna units that had to then wheel in and were then defeated outside paris.

Similarly they achieved great success when the Dardenelles were first breached destroying many of the fortifications on land, however they were reembarked and by the time larger allies forces arrive the turks had heavily reinforced.

Not sure how they could fit into the SC engine but they should be attempted in a WW1 game. For the US they were of some importance as the US army was relatively small and inexperienced compared to the marines who again were able to be deployed overseas more quickly. in the US's role they they served simply as regular infantry.

  5. sounds bonkers. I must say in a lot of my games I am really enjoying the Jap/ soviet aspect. Rambo went bushido nuts against me ivan by the millions in siberia but was unable to break out west of irkutsk thanks to some big KV1s. In other games though I've seen/ played the japs sweeping west and pinning the soviets for the final kill. All depends on how busy uncle joe is againt the hun.

Still not see a Sealion end in victory, be good to see if Rambo can pull it off against JG.

  6. Absolutely agree with you old chap, and as I was reminded living by San Francisco the real US put lots of "MPP" into shore defence and bay defence that was never used. in this game, short of one corp in DC the US player need never defend anything as he actively welcomes invasion. Allies should have a DE - create instant units but at a cost of XXX MPP per turn for x turns reflecting diverting reinforcements to the rest of the world.

  7. "Bad weather prevented total stopping of DDay v Minty."

He never stops complaining about the weather does he? Actually you suffered just as badly if not worsedefeat in Russia than xwood and that was due to your late barby. Seamonkey's 1940 autum barborossa is interestig, I may have to try it out soon....

anyway smart money on JG but lets see what Rambo can do.....

  8. Great game. Thanks for it. You're a good player. I'd just have liked to have tried out what I was about to do in the pacific. When I normally play PBEM the prize is the other's password. Feel free to send it unless it is the same one you always use.

I'll switch sides with you for another game but not for a little while. Wife is rightly telling me I spend too much time on this thing.

So my analysis of the game is a little different from Rambos. Allied strategy was initially very cautious with my intention to fight deep in russia ( I have a bunch of forts from sverdolsk to novosibrsk) but as soon as it became clear that he was invading Spain ,that Barby would be late and that the Japs were still heavily committed to finishing the Chinese I moved the entire Red army up west in summer 41 and threw a bunch of commando and paras at every chance to stretch him.

Germans had a terrible game , he invested far too much in super strength units and was very light in numbers.

Yoda always said the Germans have to stay on timetable to win. Colin I is a very vocal advocate of doing anything to throw jerry off track and in this game Rambo let himself get too distracted by Norway , Spain , a uboat campaign etc

Japanese fared a little better but made little impact against russia despite vast superiority of their forces there. After 2 years of fighting they held only the 4 most eastern towns/ cities. I was expecting a long drawn out affair with the yanks but once I saw all those tanks in China the americans just steamed west capturing all the islands and smashing the IJN with nothing but a couple of Australian land units. I then got cocky and lost some ships as far west as Singapore and had to wait 2 years for more reinforcements but it was a cheap and fasy island hop and meant I could throw everything american at Europe.

As for the rain / air issue at the end. yes a bit of bad luck but I can't see how his fighters could have stopped the 6 allied tanks I had plus infantry even with clear skies. Even if the allies had had no cover (and 7 allied fighters plus 3 CV withthe yanks on lv5 jets is not insignificant) there just weren't enough jackboots on the ground.

Rambo is tactically very very strong and I learnt a few things from him. He does complain about the weather a lot though.....

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR TUNING IN AND I HOPE YOU ENJOYED UFC1 AND LEARNT FROM OUR MISTAKES.

  9. Goebbels had nothing on Rambo. Reading his post makes you think he is winning this war as he kills my units that are INSIDE GERMANY occupying his cities....

Not too much death on my turn, russian advance through gaps in german defence to the east as he throws it all to keep the yanks out. Red air flys forwards. I have full visibility over all europe from bombers in France, Italy and Romania and I count 9!! axis fighters. only 2 TAC air though and 1 tank.

Russians surround Warsaw leaving a pocket to escape to the North . Three JS2s advance to the river. another pushes into Romania.

    Siberia we simply reinforce.

Rain in Borneo. Wax a jap TAC bomber in east indies.

There is much less written on the Japan war than German. The book above is a good read. 10 scenarios listed. all looking at different directions, weapons or tactics the japanese could have employed. only 1 is a viable war winner that does not rely on american mistakes. the other 9 would have been either minor or sometimes major war extenders and may or may not have resulted in a more favourable outcome for Japan.

i lived in Japan for 3 years and have read a lot on the subject even met some Jap veterans, certainly lots of Japanese who remember growing up with nothing left. While losing millions of people, having all your cities wiped out or nuked and being occupied for 7 years can hardly be considered "lucky" it could have been a lot worse. That worse is mostly the USSR.
