  1. Try and remember that he is thinking in Russian and translating to English. IOWs, replace infantry with rifleman and it makes sense. Don't take everything so literally.
Well, some games have specialised artillerists, I was just wondering whether this game had them too.

Thanks for the reply anyway, Megakill!

  2. Blackcat: in my opinion, there are 2 primary reasons why Zitadelle was called off:

-Russian counterattack along the Mius absorbing German reserves previously allocated to Zitadelle's central front (the reserves for the armoured spearhead, so to speak).

-The fact that the southern and northern front never got going, and in fact got "bogged down" within hours. The only unit that was advancing was the SS Panzercorps and accompanying Wehrmacht infantry/motorised units. The weather also worked against the Germans. Had it not been cloudy/rainy (according to weather reports from LSSAH and Das Reich), the Germans could've reaped more benefits from the superior range of their guns.

  3. I'm not American (and personally, I'm glad that I'm not) so I'm not in those Special Forces.

By the way, I wonder whether Bush has called on more of those very special forces. Bush's IQ betrays that he might have been a very Special Force of his own, back in his youth.

  4. ...and those two "Volkstrum" (check the name) don't even have drums.

Und ob mein Gluck mich freue, mein trumm ist sehr gross, sieh!

(paraphrasing a certain song by certain people clad in brown shirts, not the Volkssturm)

  5. Ok, as annoying as it is to see the forums overrun with new yappy little puppies excited about the new game burying us under a deluge of idiotic screennames like MEGADEATHSQUAD2000 and OBERSTRUMMBANFUEHRER
Ah, the happy feelings from a grog when the RTS kiddies decide to show their ~15 year old heads on a (mostly) wargaming forum.
  6. Once the game is out you'll be able to put your own little soldiers on the existing map (with or without a proper editor; all you need to do at the moment is fix up an XML file and we'll show people how to do it) and finetune it to the ratio you'd like to have.
That's the best news I've heard that the game is not dead, and just switched to Battlefront.
  7. True, but I don't think the buddies (w/ a turret) of the Ferdinand would try to save it. The Ferdinand might be stuck in the trench already, by the way. But even if the Ferdinand is disabled, it would take an infantry assault or a well placed 122mm or long barreled 57mm round to actually destroy it.

The Hummel in one of the other pictures is in for more trouble.

  8. I believe the "grey" icon indicates an abandoned/broken tank, which would mean that the Russian SU 122 on the left and the T34 on the right are taking a cruise through a field littered with broken tanks.

  9. Ferdinand side armour: roughly 80mm.

As a comparison between the M4 and the T34:

The Sherman as a whole possesed greater firepower than the T34. The American 75mm was superior to the Russian 76mm in both AT and HE capability. The American 76mm was superior to the Russian 85mm in AT capabilities while slightly inferior in HE. (The U.K. 17pdr mounted in the Sherman Firefly was light years ahead of all those guns in AT capability.)

When we take the relatively low quality of Russian shells into account, that Ferdinand has an excellent chance to survive without a penetration.

Edit: oh, and judging by the unit information in the lower left corner, this is an T34 M41 (in 1943), which increases the survivability of the Ferdinand.

  10. Some data from a discussion I participated in about the T34 vs M4 on the JP's Wargaming and History forum, where the following data was also included:

    T-34-76 Model 1942 - 7.6m

    T-34-76 Model 1943 - 7.6m

    T-34-85 Model 1943 - 7.6m

    T-34-85 Model 1944 - 7.6m

    PzV Panther A - 10.0m

    M5A1 - 12.8m

    M4 - 18.9m

    M4A1 - 18.9m

    M4A1(76)W - 18.9m

  11. Spacebar for pause makes the most sense, is it appeals to RTS players used to Sudden Strike or Blitzkrieg and the spacebar is BIG and can hardly be missed.

I prefer to use the right mouse button for something like an option menu or for standard orders (based on the situation, the usual move/fire etc stuff).

  12. why do some hate rts games?
Why should one not hate RTS games?

I admit: I have a lot of RTS games, but they're really no challenge to win or anything (the singleplayer part, the multiplayer part is full of shortcut kiddies and is best left untouched) and I play them to have a "break" from more serious games (D&D-rules RPG's and wargaming).

Megakill, I was wondering whether the game should be advertised as "Real Time Wargame" although that would abbreviate to RTW, which would lead to obvious problems as there's a Rome: Total War.

  13. I think it will eventually work out to something similar to the Blitzkrieg system: you can use "core" tanks almost everywhere, but will hardly ever get large amount of tanks as reinforcements (keep in mind that the 2 AAR's we've seen, excluding the newer Russian one, seemed to be designed for tank combat) unless the enemy has a lot of tanks.

In the Germany vs Poland AAR, it seems the Polish armoured forces outnumbered the Germans at first and that Moon lost a few tanks, which was balanced out by adding more tanks (also note that the Panzer IV C is more of an infantry support tank than a MBT) and that Rune's run with the French included fortified German AT positions, tanks and airplanes.

It was not all that uncommon to witness tank heavy battles in Poland (especially around the "pockets") or France in World War II, but my best guess is that it should even out later on.

  14. I can read some Cyrillic, but not everything. Perhaps a native Russian speaker would be so very kind enough to translate it? (I've learned not the touch Russian to English internet translators with a 10 foot pole).

  15. You will see that infantry guys have minimal "gunnery" skill. Tank gunner would be more or less ok to use a field gun for example though. Infantry guys will miss almost all the time
Which leads to the obvious counter question: if infantry and tank gunners are not the ones operating field guns, who are operating them (and why isn't infantry operating them, especially AT guns were operated by infantry after all) and can you "buy" or "recruit" them prior to a mission, so the guns you encounter can be put to some good use?
  16. Success of using enemy equipment greatly depends on skills of the specific soldier.
...but I only saw one "firing" (or the like) upgrade for the RPG portion. In short: every soldier is a superhuman again who is just as proficient with a rifle as with an 88?

Please tell me I'm wrong, pretty please.
