  1. Longtime player of SC1 here. I bought SC2 a while back, but just didn't get into it until recently (thanks to Fantoma's classic mod and the 1.05 patch). In all of my SC1/SC2 games as the allies against the axis AI, I have never touched my troops in Egypt. Well, in the game I started this weekend, I decided to transfer an army, a tank unit, and the hq from Egypt to France in an attempt to slow down Germany's conquest of France. That part worked ok, although I did lose a couple of armies, but Germany did drive me from the contintent. What happened next was cool, though. In all of my previous games, the axis have never made a big push to take Egypt. I have always had plenty of time to build up my forces there until I launched an offensive against them. Not this time! The AI must have calculated that I had severely weakened my Egyptian defenses, because, soon after the fall of France, Rommel shows up outside of Alexandria with a few armies and a tank unit. The next thing you know, I am thrown out of Alexandria and hard-pressed to hang onto Cairo! And now, in attempting to send more troops from the UK, I realize that they have to take the long route around the Cape, because the axis now control the Suez Canal! I never would have dreamed that the AI would have decided to launch an offensive against Egypt, because they had never done it before. But here I sit, feeling much like Churchill. I've been thrown off the continent and now The Desert Fox is at the gates of Cairo. Great game, Hubert!
  2. Fantomas, I just want to thank you once again for your fantastic SC Classic mod. I have really tried to get into SC2 with the standard look, but the squares just turned me off so much. For me, it's really hard to get a good feel for all of the angles of attack using the squares. But, your use of the octagon, and the way you somehow skew the map (I'm not sure exactly what it is about that) has brought back the same love I felt for SC1. This past week, I finally started a game in SC2 using your mod. And it was just like SC1 all over again. Just one more turn...until I look up and it is midnight and I have to go to work in the morning! Anyway, with Hubert's 1.05a patch and your great mod, I finally have a game that is better than SC1. Thanks so much! Jamey
  3. Fantomas, great to have you back! I went looking for your mods recently and could not find them, so it is fantastic to have them back. Do you still have the classic SC1 counters? I didn't see them on your website. Hope your eye problem is not too serious. Thanks! Jamey
  4. I agree completely. Hubert has hit upon a way to keep all of the realism and details that you would want in a grand strategy game, but still make the game accessible to the gamer. When you play SC, stuff just seems to make sense. I don't find myself having to consult the manual every few minutes, yet, it's not because the game has been dumbed-down into some fancy version of Risk. That's the other thing I think that works for SC. When I play it, I feel like I am presented with the same problems/dilemas/opportunities that were presented to the high commands during WWII. Every time I play, I get a better understanding of the things I read about WWII.
  5. By "everyone", I meant those people who bought the download version when it goes on sale. I have no idea when you are going to start selling that, so, if it was going to be today, I would want to be able to download it before it was opened up to everyone who will be just buying the download version. In any event, I was finally able to download it, so I'm good to go.
  6. Well, I hope you don't open it up for everyone to download until the pre-orders have had a chance to download. I don't mind waiting with the other pre-orders for my chance to download, but I should get to download before you open it up to everyone.
  7. I keep getting the "Please try again later" message, too. When's this going to be resolved?
  8. That's just a silly statement. No chance at all? Come on. Even if the "Axis onslought" were as powerful as you are implying, nothing in warfare is an absolute, forgone conclusion. So, you are saying that even if France had different leadership, deployed their forces differently, had a stronger, more determined committment from the UK, didn't overextend themselves, husbanded their reserves, and then committed them in a coordinated, forceful counterattack...you're saying they still had no chance of stopping Germany from conquering their country in the summer of 1940? I think you are very wrong. Moreover, I think your implication that there shouldn't be any way that France can hold out in the game, is wrong. Probably the main reason I loved SC1 was the ability to try different strategies than the actual historical ones, to see if I could produce results that were different from history. Can I lead France to hold back the Third Reich from overruning my country? As the Americans, can I gain and keep a foothold in Europe in 1943? As the British, what if I tried attacking Hitler through the Balkans? That's what is so great about SC. Hearing one of the beta testers say, "Don't even waste your time on France, because there's *no* way she can be saved", doesn't bode well for the game.
  9. fantomas, I just tried your latest mod and I have to say that you probably saved the game for me. I was going to buy the game either way, but i could tell from the demo that I was going to have a hard time playing the game with the isometric look. But your mod has made all the difference in the world. It makes the map much easier to read. Thank you very much!
  10. Let me start by saying that SC1 is my all time favorite wargame and the game I have played more than any other game, bar none. Now for the demo. I love the added depth of play. I have to say that I wish the game looked like SC1. I would also like to put a vote in for a zoom out function. My laptop is one of those wide-screen ones and its native resolution is 1280x800. The only resolution I can get the game to run at is 1024x768 and, at that resolution, you can only see a tiny portion of the map. The angle you view the map at in isometric mode doesn't help with situational awareness, either. I'm confident that either Hubert or a modder (like fantomas) will rectify this, but I will buy the game either way. I have gotten so much gaming fun out of SC1 that I would gladly pay Hubert $50 to buy SC1 all over again.
  11. fantomas, keep up the good work. I've tried the demo and I, too, do not like the isometric view. I think I can get used to the squares instead of hexes, but I would prefer hexes. Question: What would your map look like with the squares? That might be a good compromise. The SC1 top-down look with the squares so that it is not confusing who can attack who?
