The M4 Sherman was a good, solid, general purpose, workhorse tank.
It had a fast turning, 3 man turret. A versatile 3 inch gun. Sloped frontal armor. And a reliable transmission.
It was a medium tank, designed for infantry support.
It could hold its own against any medium tank ever made... and it outclassed a few.
Like all tanks, the M4 had a few shortcomings... but it was a generaly well rounded tank.
Agreed. It wasn't meant to go head up against other tanks. It was a very maneuverable infantry support tank that could use its speed to change firing positions to not expose its thin armor. It was not in the class of medium tanks such as the Panther, it wasn't built to shoot it out with heavily armored tanks.

If you get a chance that museum, though small, is well worth a visit. As indeed are many of the small privately owned museums scattered throughout the combat zone.
Is this your first trip to the Normandy battlefields? If so I recommend thorough planning beforehand; there is just so much to see that without a good plan you'll run out of time. I'd also recommend taking along some of the modern books on individual actions that you are interested in. The Battleground Europe series published by Pen and Sword books are excellent, they are small, cheap, contain detailed descriptions and, crucially good maps showing positions and movements of the troops. With them you can stand on a position (e.g. Hill 112) and gain a much better understanding of what you are looking at and what happened there.
I am sure you'll enjoy Normandy, its a wonderful part of the world, the people are friendly, the food is good - especially if you avoid the main tourist traps - and the local booze is well worth the drinking (Normandy cider has no equal, but can be very strong).
Agreed the Battleground Europe series is excellent. I have the MG series time to start reading!

Doesn't TOW have something like this?

I would like to se a major overhaul of urban combat. Better TAC AI movement in urban enviroments and ability to fortify houses. This is a must for EF games but it would be good to have it included in Normandy and Italy.
The general idea

I would also like to see a general overhaul of fortifications, more variations and ability to camouflage certain fortifications in order to improve their survivability on the battlefield
I like it!

It gives you an amazing amount of respect for all those men. Look at those wide expanses of beach and how these soldiers had to wade in and be human targets for hundreds of yards. God bless all the soldiers of all sides who fought in this battle. Its incredible that operation was successful given incredible odds here.

Thanks CeltiCid these are best AARs I've seen yet. Keep em coming! Joe

I have Sherman,Pershing and Abrams. All excellent books. I bought them many years ago and they were expensive then! Great pictures in all these books. Joe

Without HVAP I don't think the 76 is going to penetrate the Panther front too often at this range. I'd say 16/20 to the Panther.

Pat, JJ Fed. has some excellent books. Not cheap but you won't find alot of these elsewhere. I've already pre-ordered Das Reich. Good source for unit histories. Joe

The only real success I've had with FTs are on OT vehicles. Unless you can ambush a tank, its unlikely the FT will last even one turn. I've actually ignited a fire on an AFV and still it took me out! Fun to use but I'd rather inf. assault an AFV. Joe

That is the worst p.o.s. I've ever seen! I've never seen 2 AFVs dance before. I'll never complain about a little inaccuracy in CM again! Joe

The Hunnicutt book is excellent with many pictures not published elsewhere. I got this book more than 20yrs ago and it was expensive then. Great reference if you can find it and want to pay a high price. Joe
