  1. What about winterized Sherman mods? Are there any?
  2. I agree, BFC should host a scenario download site. With CMX2 looking like its at least 6-9 months away, they should be working to maintain a high amount of interest in CM until that time. Its word-of-mouth that will sell CMX2, not a traditional media blitz, and if their base becomes disinterested and moves on that will hurt CMX2 sales.
  3. It has certainly been a long time since that article at diygames, and still no CM: Astronomy release date!
  4. Found the same link and am also interested. Can you send via email to e_e_smith1971@yahoo.com? Thanks.
  5. No need to apologize for something that was not your fault. I have enjoyed many of the scenarios you hosted. Thanks for providing such an excellent service for everyone.
  6. An in-game tutorial would be nice, but not included as far as I can tell.
  7. Dear MikeyD: You forgot CM: Cowboys vs Indians
  8. When did the PSW 231 fire at the Soviet tank? I suspect that the tank began the turn in LOS but ended the turn out of LOS. Unfortunately the corners of the buildings in CM, as represented in the graphical display, do not exactly match the spatial representation of the corners in the game engine. The well-known result is that you can often see through the corners of the buildings even though they appear to be solid. I don't know if you would call it a bug, because it is a known feature of the software that is even alluded to in the manual IIRC. It is very frustrating when you order a tank to presumed safety behind a building, only to realize that your opponent's tank can still see it through the corner. Keep your tanks at least a couple of meters away from the corners.
  9. Given the great reputation the company has built on the Combat Mission series, it doesn't make sense not to cash in on that reputation with their new game engine. However I guess that it is possible that an intial WWII module (like D-Day or something) may be followed by a long line of games on other conflicts, including cold-war hypotheticals.
  10. You should also know that squads, including infantry, surrender more readily in CMAK than CMBB, particularly when surrounded.
  11. Cool Romanian mods. Too bad it is almost certain that the Romanians wont be included in CMX2. I intend to keep my CMBB around so that I can still play them.
  12. You might want to search for posts by JasonC about advancing over open ground. In general, you will probably want to cancel most of those TacAI sneak orders. The sneak order tires out your squad quickly which makes them more vulnerable to panic or rout. Also, the AI often doesnt sneak to the right place. If your squad is in the open and very close to cover, it might still be worthwhile to sneak there. Giving a 'hide' order instead is usually advisable, it will decrease the squad profile and allow recovery of their morale state. This works best when you can either take the heat off your squad by applying more overwatch fire on the shooters, or advance other elements to draw fire away from the pinned squad.
  13. Given that the drop would occur at an extremely low altitude, the speed of the aircraft relative to the ground would most be the major contributor to the impact speed of the falling body, not acceleration due to gravity. I guessed that a plane would be going around that speed while making a drop, although possibly it could be done at lower speeds. One wonders how risky these alleged non-parachute drops would be to the pilots, given that they would have to fly as low as possible at as low a speed as possible. It might be easier just to land the plane on skis, discharge the troops, and take off again. I ABSOLUTELY think that snow would cause a very rapid deceleration of a human body traveling at high velocity. That's why it would cause injury! Crash injury is related to the rapid deceleration, not how hard or soft the impact material is. (Although hard substances would tend to cause more rapid deceleration because they tend to be less compressible or displacable). I dont have any formulas or calculations for you, and my search of the internet didnt reveal any experiments where humans or animals were shot at high velocity toward snowbanks. Possibly such experiments have been deemed unethical. Have any of the non-parachute enthusiasts found any official documentation by the Soviet army on their use of non-parachute drops, either experimental or under battle conditions?
  14. I have also lived in frozen Canada for a good part of my life. Therefore, although I am not a military history expert, I do have a good lay understanding of snow. I would like to make 2 points about snow: 1. Snow may seem really fluffy when you see it on TV or in the movies, but that doesnt mean it will feel soft when you hit it at >100 miles per hour. By analogy, water feels extremely soft (more so than snow!) when you put your hand in it at <1 mile per hour, but if you were slammed into it at >100 miles per hour then you would be killed. 2. As Dandelion pointed out, snow cover is less than what a lot of people have assumed. Underneath the snow is very hard and pointy stuff, like rocks. Bottom line is that propelling a fragile human body into snow at >100 miles per hour is going to cause severe injury or death in the vast majority. Likewise for anyone in a crude protective device, notwithstanding what some of the more gullible forum members may have concluded by watching "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" too many times.
  15. Oops..sorry forgot to put a spoiler warning. BELATED SPOILER ALERTS! So I guess I am screwed. No engineers and I have American troops with mostly hand grenades, I am not sure they even have any rifle grenades. Perhaps I should have saved my zookie rounds for the concrete bunkers and tried to grenade the wooden ones? During set up for the second battle, two of my squads were teleported immediately in front of the firing slit of the two bunkers, and I cant place them anywhere else. They are going to get shot up pretty good in turn 1. I would love to just bypass the bunkers, and in fact the front has mostly moved beyond them, but that will leave an island of German-controlled territory right in the middle of my staging area. Operations have unique challenges compared to scenarios. According to the briefing, I am supposed to get some tanks later, maybe they can blast away those bunkers.
  16. *Warning* spoilers re: Santa Maria operation Hello to everyone. I have been playing CMAK and CMBB for about a year, and have learned a tremendous amount of game info and historical info from these forums. Thanks! Now I have finally registered and have a newbie-type question: how do you take out concrete MG bunkers with only infantry? I am playing the Santa Maria operation that comes with the CMAK CD (1st battle). I took out all of the wooden bunkers on the "tits" with my bazookas, using up most of my zookie ammunition. Now I have only the two concrete bunkers on the right hill. But I cant take them out! I have three squads on each bunker, targetting the back of it where the graphics show the door. Mostly they just sit there for the whole turn not doing anything; rarely, a grenade is thrown. I tried assaulting right on top of the bunker but the squad just ran straight through it and got machine gunned when they ran out the other side. According to my search on the CMAK forum, I am supposed to place my squads 10m away from the bunker and let them do their thing. But they dont seem to be doing anything. I get a "kill: rare" message when I target the rear of the bunker with the bazookas, and in fact they ran out of ammo without getting a kill. How many minutes does it take, on average, for one squad (or one platoon) to take out a bunker? [ June 13, 2005, 08:33 PM: Message edited by: Pirx ]
