  1. Thanks Michael, its the examples embedded within that code that are of more interest to me, not necessarily the code itself. I have taken a few classes with Dr. Ferris. In fact this essay is for his land warfare class which I am currently taking. If any U of C undergrads are looking for an interesting class I highly recommend anything taught by Dr. Ferris. His knowledge is amazing and his lectures are very well structered and you feel like you are learning something valuable.
  2. This is just the kind of stuff that I am looking for. As a Calgarian myself this has certain interest for me. Thanks again!
  3. Thank you John Kettler for those books, I've looked into a few (Gwynne Dyer especially makes some good points), but there are some there I haven't heard of before. I really appreciate it. Tagwyn, I don't believe I am concocting a fairytale. I am not going into this with a biased opinion at all, and I am doing extensive research into this subject. By no means will I have a definitive thesis stating one way or the other, because it is obvious that this issue is not black and white. I don't believe that writing a paper on this 'fairy tale' would get academic approval from a well known professor with a PhD from Kings College, if there was not something legitimate to back it up.
  4. Wow, its nice to see the varied opinions. Thanks everyone for your contributions to this thread, its very interesting to see how everyone interprets this subject.
  5. The sub-human view of the Russians wasn't necessarily a Nazi induced opinion, but was also prevalent just as a general German opinion. This was pointed out to me by my professor and he made the point that to the average German, who lives in the well maintained cities with everything clean and orderly, Russia must have seemed like a backwards hell (which unfortunately was reflected upon the Russian people). The British on the other hand shared many traits with the Germans and a relatively similar standard of living, and were generally viewed to be equals.
  6. Very valid point Sergei regarding North Africa. Well I'm about to dive headlong into this essay and the result should be about 30 pages or so I hope, but I'll be sure to post it for you grogs to look over Thats a lot so far for the insight.
  7. I have found lots of evidence in regards to what you are mentioning Martyr, and I definetly think the foreign territory issue enters into the whole equation. Sergei, I can see how 'chivalry' could possibly be interpreted as treason, but I think many soldiers have an immense amount of compassion and empathy with what the enemy is experiencing, because they too could see themselves in that position.
  8. I'm not asking for scholarly sources or anything, I have several resources available to me. I'm just asking for opinions on the issue. Several articles and monographs I have read show countless examples of 'old-world chivalry' present on the battlefields of North Africa. Probably the most memorable is Hans von Luck's accounts in his memoires of the war, where he mentions the gentlemen's agreement that he worked out with the C.O. of the Royal Dragoons. Essentially they had an agreement at 17:00 everyday they would cease any combat, and then would contact each other by radio to list the prisoners they had taken, and assure that they were safe and healthy. He also lists exchanges of prisoners for medical supplies and food. I'm not suggesting that North Africa was a desirable experience by any means, but it was distinctly different from the Eastern Front. Quarter was often shown, and enemies had a great deal of respect for each other. An example of the quarter that was given was when his column was on patrol and came under attack by RAF fighters. One pilot flew at a very low level and signalled von Luck and his crew to clear off their armoured car, before making a second pass and destroying it with strafing fire.
  9. I wasn't sure exactly where to put this thread, so I apologize in advance if this is the wrong place. I am about to write my undergrad dissertation on chivalry and honour in combat during World War 2, and specifically I will be looking into North Africa with the writings of Rommel and von Luck and contrasting it to the brutal combat that took place on the Eastern Front. Does anyone have any opinions about chivalry and honour in combat during the war? I'm just trying to get the gears going in my head and start brainstorming, so any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I'll make sure i'll post a link on these forums once everything is all done.
  10. Hello! I've been hanging around reading topics on these forums for quite some time with the occaissional reply but I've not actually posted an introduction. I've been playing Combat Mission in all its forms since CMBO and am truly obsessed with it, but only ever play 1 other human opponent (a good friend of mine). I am currently studying Military History and Political Science at the University of Calgary and I would dare to say that I've learned more about tactics from these games and forums than any books I've read so far. I look forward to discussing CM more with all of you, and maybe even play a couple PBEM games!
  11. This didn't happen to me, but rather to my opponent. We were playing a small meeting engagement scenario just for fun and I decided to drop some rocket artillery in the centre of the map to make things more interesting. It did plenty of damage to his troops advancing in the open, but more importantly a stray shell just happened to hit at the far edge of the map and kill all three of his artillery spotters in the first turn.
  12. I'm taking a shot at Road to Ihantala(sp?) by Sergei. Its massive and beautifully detailed so i'm very much looking forward to it.
  13. I would love to check this out! lonnsachadh@hotmail.com
  14. A friend and I have been playing CMMB and CMAK on and off for a few years now, and we are ready to tackle a massive operation. Does anyone know of any massive operation (say 4500x4000) floating around the web?
  15. Hello everyone, I'm new to these forums but I have been playing all three games for ages. Today I was going to meet my friend at university and play a hotseat game for CMBB on a map that was going to be on the extreme cold setting to honor the -45 celcius weather we are currently dealing with in Canada. I packed up my laptop and my CMBB cd and bundled up to catch public transit to university but upon arrival there i opening my jewel case containing the cd to find that the cold had caused it to snap into several pieces Some greater power did not want me to play the game today...anyways just thought i'd share my little story...keep those CD's in warm places!
