  1. One year (1991-92) of conscript duty in the Italian Army. Two months of basic training 2nd Btn. / 28th inf. Rgt. "Pavia" in Fano, then paper pusher in uniform in a "Military Precinct" (draft and recruitment) in Modena till the end of my service.

Training was basically a farce: how to salute, march, clean the barracks...

The highest point in my brief "career" was when I fired 2 clips with a WWII vintage M1 Garand and 1 mag. with a Beretta BM59 at the firing range for a grand total of 36 rounds.

Never gave me the chance to put my hands over a MG3... :(

Ah, almost forgetting about the 2 hand grenades, I mean, "slighlty beefed-up firecrackers" they made us toss towards a target made of piled up tires 20m. away...

With the training we got, even a bunch of pygmy tribesmen (with all due respect for the pygmy tribesmen) would have made mincemeat of our Company.

As previuosly stated by the fellow citizen Nicdain, one year of conscript service is (mostly) a wasted year & wasted money.

Now the military service in Italy is based only on volounteers / full professionals.

    Regards,

Apart from the "usual" uber-cats (Tiger & Panther), I think the Brummbar could be a serious candidate for overruse (expecially with rariry off). Bigger ammo loadout and an armor that is light years better than the other 150mm sp. guns make for a real match winner.

Don't get too cocky with this beast, though: the other day I wanted to whack the AI a little, so I bought a couple of Brummbars for the purpose.

OK, let's not consider the one that got bogged in a place that had LOS over... nothing.

"**** happens", I thought, "I still have the other one...". So I moved the other Brumm with a "hunt" command to smash a puny T70 that had the guts to come up and play: T70 fires, missed. Brummbar fires, missed. T70 fires, gun hit...WTF? GUN DAMAGED! AAARGGHHH!!!

In despair, I punched the ALT + A keys and called it a day.

Even if you sport a Brummbar, always play it safe, because the Murphy's law lies in wait. ;)

  3. Thanks for the tip, Junk2drive.

I checked the CMBBdb and, yes, you and Other Means are right. Even HE rounds have different penetration figures! I still fail to see the logic in it, though, expecially this one-way advantage to the Axis.

Same tank, same ammo. The only other things that change are the crew and the paintjob.

I think that the side (ANY side) that uses captured tanks should be slightly disadvantaged, at least in terms of main gun handling (accuracy, target acquisition and ROF). After all, the crew fights in a machine in which it has never been trained before.

Anyway, one thing I know for sure: my opponent will be happy to hear the good news! :D

  4. originally posted by Other Means: You could play Germans with captured Soviet T34's but they would still have the advantage of better ammo - a German T34 outperforms a Soviet T34.
    Really?

With all due respect, are there tests supporting this statement?

I'm asking because I was sure that ammo wouldn't have been a problem in a "like on like" engagement...

Let me explain: I've suggested to one of my usual opponents a balanced pure-armor M.E. to improve our tanks tactics. So balanced that at first I've proposed a Panther vs. Panther engagement using captured tanks. Then I realized that there could be more than that, so here's the OOB:

2 Panthers plts. (3 tanks each plt.)

    4 T-34 Plts. (12 tanks altoghether)

    1 Su-85 plt. (4 tanks)

Crews are all regulars (and NO, I didn't botch with morale bonuses and/or ammo loadouts! ).

Now, I'm more prone to think that command delays (russky side) can be an issue, but different ammo quality never crossed my mind!

Come on! Let's suppose a German squad captures a T34: they hand it over to a kraut crew, but the ammo they use will be soviet ones. Why? Because Axis industries don't produce rounds for the 76.2/L43 soviet gun!

Same goes for the Russians: their captured Panther won't use russky made ammo for a german 75mm/L70 gun!

    Or not?

I hope what you're saying, O.M., is not true: guess who will play as Russian?

    Cheers

  5. YES - Potentially, a direct hit by a 120mm round (or similar caliber) can kill a tank with a "top penetration" or if the round falls close enough,it can cause an immobilization and the crew may bail out (e.g. In a PBEM, a 105mm round exploded about 10m. away from my T34: the engine just died, and the crew abandoned the tank).

    My 2(euro)cents...

  6. I did some tests with a HMG34 (commanded by a plt. HQ) firing "area fire" to 3 plts. of british engineers (regular) placed at 100m, 250m and 500m.

Walpurgis Nacht is right: the area of effect has roughly a diameter of 90/100m regardless of the MG-to-target distance.

Here are some pics from the 250m. test:

    mgtest0026qv.jpg

The 3 platoons are placed along the treeline, with some squads in open terrain. The yellow dot represent the MG area fire target.

    mgtest0033fg.jpg

This pic is a snapshot taken during the first movie (from the German side): the units with the red dot immediately hug the ground, some start crawling back towards the treeline. The squads with the green dot are not affected by the MG fire.

    mgtest0046du.jpg

Same turn, seen from the Brits' side: the units in the open have sneaked back to the trees. The units with the red dots are suffering from the area fire: at every burst, they hit the ground. Some recover better than others, depending from their HQ morale. The squads with green dots never take cover, but never shoot back either.

I traced a LOS line between the outer squads affected by the MG fire to have a better reference.

I ended the test around turn 5. In both the 250m and 500m tests the MG remains undetected (sound contact). In the 100m test, the area of effect remains the same but the MG is easily spotted, some squads open up despite the shot cover arc. The MG ignores tha area target order and begins to target specifical squads. In the end, the MG goes down and panics.

    mgtest000xw.jpg

This pic is for Walpurgis Nacht.

I have the gridded sand/arid terrain mod by Caffino that has a 10mX10m grid.

From the pic you posted, you seem to have the same (or similar) terrain mod.

That's why I said that probably you were wrong giving the area of effect a diameter of 100m: the yellow circle in that pic you posted has a +/- 50m diameter.

I stink in math, but I've counted the squares... smile.gif

I'll be glad to buy you that drink, if one of us should ever cross the pond! :D

    Cheers

  7. -Yellow circle: area of MG (LMG and HMG) effect. It is 100m diameter exactly.

Looks like a 10x10 m. gridded map to me, so the suppressed area's diameter should be about 40m.

Probably you got confused by the distance between the MG position (blue dot) and the area fire target (orange dot) that seems to be around 100m.

Didn't mean to criticize your work, though! :D

And the idea of area fire ahead of the scouting path is really interesting!

    Thanks!

I'd wager it's because "vanilla" is the most basic, generic flavor of ice cream. If not specifically said otherwise, ice cream tastes like vanilla.

I didn't dare to give my own interpretation of a colloquial english term I've first encountered on this very forum, but Bone Vulture seems to confirm my guess. Or maybe, being he a Finn and me an Italian, we're both wrong... smile.gif
  9. In my experience, I've found that towed light AA are the best compromise: cheap, stealthy and effective at warding off planes and in engaging enemy softies at long range. The russian 25mm comes with a huge ammo count (100, HE only), but enough to punch holes in halftracks. The german 20mm is a bit more versatile with its HE/AP mix.

In a 1250/1500 pts game, 3 green 20mm/25mm and a green jeep (if I should need to move them later) are my usual purchase.

I've had good results with them against vanilla planes, but against Sturmoviks having a 37mm wouldn't be bad!

  10. Hi RAM!

    Budget problems, huh? :D

From your buying list I see you are going for quality over quantity, but this way you end up pretty outnumbered by cheaper Russkies. How about lowering a notch the troops' quality to get some more assets you can play with? For instance, do you really need a veteran FO? And all of your infantry as veteran ? I think some more optimization can be done, so that you can save some points to invest in other useful assets: one more 75mm Pak to cover your flank, or a 150mm IG, or another tank, or some more infantry...you choose.

BTW, my usual CMBB opponent is getting lazy in sending me turns so I have time for another PBEM. Drop me a set up, if you want: you play the evil Ivan "SMG" Rusher and...I'll try to walk in your shoes as German, or vice versa, and let's see what happens. E-mail is in my profile.

    Cheers,

    Cassidy

  11. Well RAM, look at it this way, you have an advantage over this opponent: he's predictable.

He's a rusher, so you know where he'll be hanging around and which routes he is going to follow. And you know beforehand that most of his infantry force will be SMG infantry.

These are bonuses for you, IMO.

Buy your force consequently: heavy arty and strong direct HE support (75mm/105mm/150mm IGs, StuGs/StuHs, Pz IV tanks).

Set up so that you have covered the most probable approach avenues and to have LOS/LOF to the flags (you know he will be sitting there sooner or later,no?).

Then, whack the hell out of him!!!

While the whacking is still in process, move your infantry in followed by your mobile assets as overwatch.

If your infantry still meets resistance, give 'em some more HE area fire and, yes, torch the place (Flammpanzers/Flame h.tracks are a good backup for your infantry).

BTW, have you thought about adding Pioneers to your infatry mix? They are pretty effective in close quarters firefights with their FTs and satchel charges and against already suppressed troops they are lethal.

Anyway, I wouldn't get obsessed by those flags. In an old post, another player whom I can't recall the name wrote (more or less): "Flags should not be viewed as objectives. They are bonus points you get for doing well. Having a flag does not let you fight better. Losing troops makes you fight worse. Concentrate on the fight. Play to win the battle and to kill the enemy and let the flags sort themselves out".

I think this is a damn good advice, it helped me a lot.

I hope it will help you, too. smile.gif

  12. Hi Ram!

Just a couple of things that come to mind: I think that 81mm mortars are a little bit too light for the pounding thing. Of course treebursts do enhance the effects to some extent, but I think 105mm arty has a better suppression/killing power.

With enough money, I'd go for a 81mm mortars FO for the smoke (with short delays and high ammo count you can deploy a coupla smoke screens to cover more than one approach) and I'd let the 105mm FO do the hammering.

As a side note, direct HE fire to the entry area do help keeping the enemy's heads down: inf guns, tanks (short 75mm PZIV e.g.) and StuGs/StuHs are great for this.

About the infantry assault, I think that the "fast" order is not the best for crossing the open area: with the "advance" one, your man can withstand more enemy fire and can even stop and return some fire, too.

Last, but not least, the assault should begin WHILE the music is on, I mean when the arty barrage and/or HE area fire is still coming down. Sure some "shorts" will rattle your men allright, but while the enemy is still busy keeping his butt in cover, they won't receive too much fire from the defenders.

My 2 (euro)cents...I'm sure better players than me can give you more (and more sound) advice.

    Cheers and Merry Xmas!

  13. Hi guys!

I copy/paste the translation of "What the Italian troops say" I did for CMAK. Hope it helps!

For me, I found extremely useful German and Russian ones!
