  1. They were also designed more for the special ops type units, which the pathfinders fall into. I think the idea was to get good armament with ied protection and good load carrying capacity. From my understanding the snatch landrover is still the main mode of transport for your standard troops and its pretty comparable to HMMWV.

  2. The Tu-22 that was shot down was on a recon flight' date=' and was (apparently) crewed by instruction staff from a flight school somewhere.....which imnplies that the Russians don't consider their line pilots all that flash.[/quote']

Test pilots actually i believe, which would imply an even higher degree of expertise.

I'm not sure where to start.... how bout no, just no. The SU-27 is great, but it can be out turned and outrun by an F-15. It can also be spotted and killed by and F-15 before it knows it. It cannot shoot BVR without radar, the AA-12 isn't designed for it. It can detect, and maybe shoot, with IR stuff but I'm not sure how accurate that is. Its a great airshow plane, but I don't think the cobra move will win you a dog fight. The AMRAAM is the best long range missile in the world and can do most of the things you thought the Russian missles could do.

  3. The only thing is predators aren't designed for CAS missions, not that it can't take two aimed shots, its going to be up there for about 15 hours providing overwatch or intel to the ground troops. From the commanders perspective you'd just about eliminate the fog of war aspect if you had one on station. I'm not sure how you'd add that to the game. The Reaper would actually be a more appropriate addition since it is a CAS platform by nature. You'd get more bang for your buck to, 16 hellfires (eventually) and 2 gbu's. Another option is the MQ-1C (see the army's Warrior for reference), adds another pair of hellfires and has better sensors and should be replacing the B models some day. Of course I'm not sure big airforce has actually sat down and thought about how these will be used in a real war, still a little bit of that "ooo look at the cool remote control plane" mentality out there..... and I think I've rambled enough now.

  4. Guys,

Let's say for a minute that Al Gore and multitudes of scientists turn out to be wrong. What's the worst thing that can happen? We live in a cleaner and healthier environment? Damn that Al Gore for encouraging us to use cleaner energies so our kids can grow up safer!

I suppose the fact that our biggest "green" movement of using ethanol is very quickly eating up food stuffs and the land used for growing food, and introduces Nitric Dioxide (and you thought carbon was bad) in large volumes to the atmosphere is a big improvement. Those "green" fuels are also harder on motors having a much lower lubricity, drying up your seals and gaskets decreasing engine life and gas mileage. I'm sure someone is a winner here but it isn't us or anyone's kids.

  5. I think those where 2.75in rockets not Hellfires, off of an AH-6. They fired in very fast succession and where way to close to the target for Hellfires. There might have been some minigun rounds from it too, hard to tell with all the other shooting going on. It is very cool to see it all from an eye level view though.

    Ummm... Those are both M113's.
  7. The chances of the M113 actually going to war agian is minimal at best. With the MRAP being put into frontline use in not only HMMWV size but also in battle bus size (11 passengers or so) the need for M113 vanishes. Hell theres people in the DOD that want to replace all HMMWV's with MRAP's to. Its the way of the future I tell's ya!

  8. Lots of the show seems to be hype and gee whiz type stuff. But they've shown some good usable technology too, like the MP-7, HK 416, Mgapul Masada, M-110. Even though it was pretty much a promotional video for the weapons it was also fairly informative. They just did a great episode about new Israeli tech looking a new SAM systems using air to air missiles, and there anti RPG/ATGM missile systems. Not the best show but its cool to see the tech in action.
