  1. Question - is anyone else still playing SC1?

I think SC2 is a better game all around, yet I love the basic SC. I love the hexes over the tiles, but its not just that. I think it will go down as one of the all time classic stategy type war games. It has to be a classic and hard to beat for old timers like me to just enjoy a simple game.

What it amounts to is you take an extremely narrow view of what should and shouldn't be speculatred on.

I think we should speculate on situations, not personalities. If all we can do is mimic what we think the actual historical figures would have done, we're depriving ourselves of most of the fun that's to be had in these things.

Excellent thread Seamonkey. I have to agree with JJ. We speculate on the situation, not the personalities. Who here plays the Axis as if they were Hitler? Or the USSR as if they were Stalin. It is of course all speculative, but I dont speculate on the persons but on how the situations turned out and could be changed via a game.

Will post this here hope it fits

Testing a game of the lastest version of your excellent mod. BTW - the SC community should commend you for this effort, great job. Excellent.

I tested how fast the Germans could get to Smolensk. Historically this key city fell on July 16th, with the Germans beginning the battle on July 10th and it continued for some time with an encirclement after the capture of the city which the soviets broke for awhile. This gives a good idea of how fast the Germans drove into Russia.

In the mod when I play a hot seat game. I move the Russians just out of the way so as not to impeed the Germans, the fastest the Germans can get to Smolensk is to the hex outside the city on the game date of July 13th. That is only of course armor with the Russians not getting in the way at all. The ground troops are still way back.

Could the map be just a bit too large. Just a question?

In a teaching mode the game teaches me how fast the Germans drove into the USSR and still could not conquer them. The Blizkrige failed for one of many reasons in that the USSA was just too large.

Thanks for the mod great job.

  4. Kuni,

Great mod. Although my experience against the AI is like Runnungs. The only problem is he is better than me and I just got to Moscow. On the door steps of Lenigrad. I guess historically not bad but in the south very little headway. Didnt even take Kiev. Again just at the door of Kiev. The real problem is the Russians just keep coming and coming and coming. I think the problem is as you stated in one of the posts above, in 1941 the Russian units were not close to how good the Russian units were in 1943 or 1944. But in the game its all the same. Hard to balance.

I will try a few games with the AI set at a lower level. But that is just the AI. Perhaps in a human verses human game the Axis could get a bid like we use to do in SC1.

Anyway it was great fun and thanks for all the hard work you did.

Well Hubert, I finally got SC2 and spent the weekend on it. Didnt really mind the lack of hexes but couldnt cope with the isometric view. Liked some of the features, but overall, for a wargamer this isnt the game. Perhaps other people will like it and given the time you spent on creating it, I certainly hope so. However, I didnt like the big pieces and the big squares. I am going back to SC1 and really hope that you might think about combining the best features of both games and produce another game for wargamers (with hexes).

Hey Alexander, you played many a many game of SC that is for sure so I do remember you. We had some good fights ourselves I think. I understand what you mean. For us ol foggies that are use to hexes it does take a bit of getting use to. But give it another try, it just takes a bit for those of us use to hexes.

I also am not a fan of the campaign. (For various reasons) But give the Mods a chance. There are some good mod's out there. The North Africa Mod is good and Kuni is building a great Mod on the eastern front (He has done a lot of great work but is still refining it). I hope others make more. I think that is the greatness of this game - that via the editor that you can build some really fun mod games. Just my view of course as I am sure others love the campaign game. But I hope you will give a some time.

  7. Yes partisans are hell. I am just playing around and will have to find those places to control them. But then in the actual war I believe the partisans were a pain in the back for the Germans.

As far as Bombing, I think the Germans are getting bombed a bit too much early on. Perhaps someone here can give me a better picture but I had always thought that the heavy bombing of Germany didnt start until sometime in 1942 and then then really intensivied in late 42 or early 1943. Maybe that is just my perception any one know for sure?

Overall great work on the mod.

  8. Kuni, thanks for the info on the navy. Never knew that.

Jersey wonder what ever happened to most of those spainards. ?

The Germans sure did have some Soviets fighting for them but not sure about the numbers. (I think I remember reading that a lot of them were Ukrainians, like the 1st Ukraining which was the 14th Waffen Grenadier) One interesting option would be what if the Germans invaded with a mindset of being liberators instead of murderers? I wonder how many Soviets would have would have joined them. Of course that is a never ever option because of who the Nazi's were and stood for.

Kuni - I'll give you a game in a bit. I have to travel some soon and will be out of the country and away from internet.

  9. Kuni, been playing your new patch tonight for a few moves. Excellent work. You must have put in a lot of time into this.

I remember playing the first large SSI game on the war in Russia. I had it down in my basement for months on end moving all those tiny little pieces all over the map.

Question - did Russia really have that Navy in the Baltic sea? What did the Germans have just some subs? What ever happened to that navy?

  10. Jersey is always a nice guy. The review is not a bit harsh, its Too Harsh!

    Poor review in my mind.

I am still waiting on my hard copy to get into the game but the little I have looked at it I really like. Although - when I do reflect back on SC1 I think it was the best priced game I ever bought for the time and enjoyment I got out of it. IF SCII even comes close it will be worth the price.
