  1. Yes they were in command. However I just found this post: http://central.masterzen.net/index.php?showtopic=966 According to that post, in this situation drawing a target line to your target will show that you have no line of sight, however if you ignore that and click anyway, you will be able to area fire. Possibly I saw the orange/black line and assumed I couldn't hit the target, and never actually tried to click it anyway.
  2. I had this happen yesterday too, several times in one game, with 2 different HQ's. In the tutorial mission, I followed the manual's instructions and was able to fire mortars from over the ridge. In my game yesterday, on two occasions I had HQ's with attached mortars that wouldn't work. One example, HQ was ~200 meters from a MG bunker. When I use LOS tool for the HQ, it showed a blue line to the bunker. The mortar unit, in command, would give a red/black line to the bunker and say "No line of sight". I could draw the target back about 5m and get an area target, but never could gain a target on the bunker itself. And yes, both times the HQ was not hiding, standing in open ground. :edit: Is it possible that the quality of the HQ and/or mortar team would determine if spotter indirect fire is possible?
  3. Ok that makes sense. Also please answer a question about cover arcs. Since you can set the distance of the orange arc as well as width, will a unit fire beyond that range shown if the enemy is within that arc? In other words, lets say I set a 45 degree cover arc straight ahead, but only like 10m out. An enemy is directly ahead at a range of 60m, would they be engaged?
  4. Most sims do have a replay feature, adding to what was said above about Gran Prix Legends (yes a great game!), the Nascar Season series (from Papyrus, via Sierra) also allows you to save full races. You could be racing yourself as the video is recorded, then later play back any session from any car or camera posistion. Tribes is an online FPS game that also features a nice 'demo recording' feature, but the demo is from your perspective only. I guess the question really would be is there any turn based sim that allows you to later view the entire session as a seamless movie? Not that I know of.
  5. I'm sure I'm missing something very obvious here, but I can't figure out how to order a unit to NOT fire. For example, in a recent thread someone was discussing using sharpshooters to sneak to the back lines as scouts. This seems to work ok as long as the unit keeps on the move, but sometimes I want to order units to hide and NOT fire, setting up an ambush for approaching enemies. It seems that units in hiding will fire at will against targets of oportunity. I understand that a unit will defend itself if engaged, that is realistic. However there have been occasions where units in hiding have fired first against approaching enemies, ruining an ambush I was trying to set.
  6. Hey 3 replies in ~30 minutes Thanks for the advice, and anyone else please do chime in with your opinions and thoughts. I do have basic combat tactics knowledge, just not on a large scale. I played SL and ASL (the tabletop versions, not PC) wayyyy back, moved onto miniature tabletop battles (Games Workshop line, some Micro Armor and Combined Arms), and in the last 5-6 years became a real PC game fanatic. Not just wargaming, but any genre of PC gaming. I gotta give the props to everyone involved in the CM series. Technically on par, nice interface that isn't overwhelming, and wow.. $35 list? All the awards presented were well deserved, and it's great to see a community that represents that.
  7. I have CMBB and enjoyed it a bit, but found myself easily overwhelmed. I'm a fan of combat sims, but not too versed in historical data. The campaigns were too much for me to take in at once, and the one-off scenarios were hard to pick from. I just ordered CMAK, after reading all the rave reviews. I'm hoping someone here can help me with some advice on where to start with it. Is there a website where I can read up on some novice strategies that are relevent to the game? Can someone recommend either a smaller campaign, or scenario(s) that are fun, not too complicated, and hopefully winable by a novice? I'm looking for somewhere to get my feet wet before I wade into the full glory  Thanks!
  8. I'm new to the CM series, just purchased CMBO. I'm a bit overwhelmed at all the add-ons out there.. Are the most popular cosmetic mods included? As in terrain and sound/graphic effect changes? Also, from what I've read, installing a mod is done by overwriting the .bmp's with new ones, so the only way to revert to the default would be to make a copy of that folder prior to installing a mod, and copying it back if you wanted to use it. Is that correct? Overall I'm very impressed with the game, and even more so with the community around it. Great show everyone.
