  1. Since airfleets are limited, I felt cheap experience for my cruisers was critical. So I tried not to take Denmark until I had some 8 months experience built up for the German cruisers, at the expense of some lost MPP. But the UK reinforcements offset that some also.

    From Swiss Press

Presently the isolationist USA and non-agression pact signatory USSR seem uninterested in the joining the widening European War, which has now become the UK against Germany and Italy. But with continued German agression against neutral countries and Japans military adventures in China encroaching upon each of their interests, another World War seems unavoidable.

Irish refusal to allow naval basing rights has caused a stir in the UK high command, and military action seems possible as a protective measure.

Black-out conditions continue in Italy, with no news or sight of the Italian military.

Meanwhile, the German press announced that all (civilian) flights to Sweeden have been cancelled.

Explosions, engine failures, dropped test tubes and pocket protector shortages continue to plague German labratories.

  2. In an earlier war between Comrade Trapp (allies) and myself, rapid Axis advances into France looked promising for a quick French surrender. But the German armies were surrounded and destroyed. Although France fell in late 1940, the delays led to victory for Comrade Trapp.

Will I be able to maintain the advance and not suffer such catasprophic defeat again? Comrade withdraws from the LC borders as he remembers victories past against Germany.

  3. MythicalMino,

These charts of which I speak were found in the dark recesses of past threads. The link is below

    http://users.erols.com/chare/cm/

Look near the bottom of the page for "CM1 XLS Tables - Tables in Excel format". Move that old chest out of the way, and just throw that blanket anywhere. Don't get the MS Works version, or CM2 (Barbarossa to Berlin) by accident. Hightlight every cell in the worksheet (use the select-all cell above and to the left of cell A1) change the font to black after unzipping (as mentioned below his link), and voila! You will be in Grog-heaven.

Someone spent an long evening to short weekend compiling these great charts on penetration, firepower at range/angle, etc. Really good stuff to learn and compare weapons and armor with. Again, thanks to the (Chris Hare (I think).

  4. I just bought the CMBO:special edition last week. Does it include any of these mods mentioned here, or are these mods independent of the new release?

Absolutely love the game-I had enjoyed the CM:BB demo but was ready for more maps. Laying down that first artillery strike, after funnelling the enemy into a small area and surpressing them with rifle squads and LMG to keep them there, was worth the price of the game.

Read the manual cover to cover the first day and then downloaded some charts by Chris Hare (thank you!). I'll get the CM:BB this fall when the re-release comes out.

  5. I've been compiling this for awhile, and decided to share it for possible use in the Strategy Guide. Each figure was an average of at least 8 samples with most samples of 15 or more. Because of the small standard deviation of the data, I feel the averages are fairly accurate despite the small sample sizes. I have no data on Axis invasion of the USA or Canada because I never do that. Sea Lion has not been documented enough by me to have a figure for it either.

I erased the original, so I no longer can say with certainty what the ranges are, but most will only fluxuate by 1 or 2 points within a game. Every 5th or 6th sample the fluxuation could be 3-4 points. If anyone else has done this and has different results of greater than 2%, let me know. Most of the tests were done using normal German invasion patterns, of Denmark, Norway, and LC to open. From there most possibilities for the 4th German DOW, such as Sweeden, Vichy, Spain, Iraq, etc were all tested in various orders.

What I found most surprising is that invading Sweeden has about the same effect as invading Vichy or Spain. And that Iraq is a killer (18%) for both USA and USSR readiness.

How to wake a sleeping bear: Invade Turkey or the Baltic States.

War Readiness effects for Axis DOW

    USSR% USA% Total%

    Ireland 4 6 10

    Norway 5 8 13

    Greece 5 8 13

    Denmark 6 8 14

    Low Countries 6 9 15

    Portugal 4 11 15

    Sweeden 4 15 19

    Spain 5 15 20

    Vichy France 5 16 21

    Iraq 18 18 36

    Baltic States 33 7 40

    Turkey 36 9 45

I think you may have misunderstood what I meant by having different unit types. My idea is that once you had reached say level 3, you would still have level 2, 1, an 0 tanks in the field and still available for production. But the individual units could not be modified, just more selections made as to which level to purchace. Some battlefronts (8p) do not need the latest weapons, and the designs of existing models are not lost.

Now your post did inspire me to think of something else though. Tech advances do not necessarily have to be linear or consistent in their effects. There could be an expanded tech advance system, where advancements occured randomly within each advancement.

In one game the first advance for an airfleet might be an increase in air attack only (say from better targeting), the second advance in ground (soft) attack due to larger caliber cannons, the third advance in air defense (improved armor), the fourth in naval attack (better ordinance), the fifth for a second advancement in air defense, the sixth once again in air defense, etc. In a new game, the first airfleet tech advancement might be in naval attack. Some advancements, such as jets, might improve air defense and attack, and perhaps in larger increments. It is concievable one advance would yield +1 to naval attack, and another advance (jets) improved air attack and air defense by +3 each.

Limits on quantity for new designs (the bomb, jets, Tigers come to mind) would be an obvious next step if the tech advancements are of such impact. If the steps for advancement are more incremental than in SC-1 then the costs or frequency of advancements would have to be adjusted also.

I have had Strategic Command 2 months exactly today-I kind of miss those 15+ hours per week I had free before SC.

  7. I don't think having mixed tech level units is all that difficult-especially since it isn't me up until 4 AM writing the code 8p.

What you could have are seperate unit types based upon tech level (Tank Lev0, Tank Lev1) instead of having a modifying the attributes of a single unit type based upon tech level. It would seem the easiest way to program it, instead of having a single type (generic Tank) which requires tracking each individual tanks level, just have the unit types reflect the differences based on pre-assigned unit types.

The lowest levels could also be used to reflect antiquated/substandard equipment such as the Polish airfleet in 1939 or the Amrican torpedos in 1942. More "modern"nations could start at tech level 1 or 2 to account for the differences present at the outbreak of war.

As far as upgrades because of an advance such as sonar, I believe for the tech to take effect the affected unit should be required to return to a port or city (ground units) for a refit. This was a common practice in WWII, as corvettes and destroyers were refitted with the newest equipment as it became available-but in a port, not on the open sea.

I agree that Tanks and aircraft would rarely be "upgraded" in the field, and a tech advance would represent a new structural design which is not applicable to existing units.
