  1. I only own the Demo at this point. I've read the .doc and the .pdf that come with the demo both through twice now, and the following isnt covered. Is there a rank-order for terrain in terms of what is "good" terrian? Im assuming that some terrian is probably good for "hiding" while other terrian might not be so good for actually hiding, but gives some sort of physical cover. For instance: Scattered Trees Rough Rocky Woods How do these related to each other? Is "rocky" as good as "woods" ? Is "rocky" Better than "rough" ? I ordered them in the above list, the way im guessing they are for "hiding". If there is a list someplace on the net that shows the different terrain types and their effectiveness i'd aprecaite the link and/or reply in this post. Thanks in advance Mainly what im hoping for is some post somewere, or a link to a website, or just a Vet players run-down on what the "rank order" for cover is, from say best to worst... 2. I was watching "The World At War" (the second tape) In it, they are discussing the German/Engish battles in North Africa. One of the commanders says something to the effect of : "Advance with your tanks, then retreat and lure the enemy onto your own anti-tank gun lines" Im thinking this one would just equate to getting your own tanked banged up and them spotting your AT as usual within 1 turn anyhow in CMBB. As usual im a newbie , just throwing out a newbie question. BTW: "The World At War" kicks ass , if you havent seen it go rent it. Probably the best WWII documentary i've ever seen, and probably the second best Documenatary i've EVER seen. (Second only IMHO to Ken Burns The Civil War)
  3. Thanks guys! LOL now i know what the guys are talking about in WWII documentaries when they talk about hull-down postions! Well that and now that is sure one hell of a good command in CM ! Im just now learning about LOS and such , but damn that hull down command saves me a whole lot of trying to "guess" when my tank can see the enemy tank... I think i might break the "terrain" question into its own thread...
  4. From a newbie (at least to these forums anyhow) my inital asumption is: Gamey : A tatic used, to kick your ass, and you dont like it. EG you kicked the enemys units asses, but then at the last minute they rush a ceritan objective and hold it with one measly little unit. Thoughts: Get over it. Get over it? Get over it! Right? If they beat you, they beat you. Thats it, unless its a bug exploit. Right?
  5. Hi Currently i only have the demo, and as such, i only have the "manuals" that come with the demo. Two "basics" type questions that arented covered: FIRST: In the .doc file it says : What does that part in italics mean? "being hull down realative to..." Using the term "hull-down" to describe what "hull-down" means is pretty funny. I really have no clue what is being said here. Thanks in advance. SECOND: Is there a rank-order for terrain in terms of what is "good" terrian? For instance: Scattered Trees Rough Rocky Woods How do these related to each other? Is "rocky" as good as "woods" ? Is "rocky" Better than "rough" ? I ordered them in the above list, the way im guessing they are for "hiding". If there is a list someplace on the net that shows the different terrain types and their effectiveness i'd aprecaite the link and/or reply in this post. Thanks in advance
  6. Thanks for the tips guys, i've played the mission several more times, in light of the recent suggestions. And have done much better. But i still know i suck. Im still a big confused about one thing in perticular: The idea of "hiding" AT teams and ATRs. I have been playing with EFOW. But , litterally EVERY time the tanks get within, i'd say 60 m or so, they start finding my ATRs and TH and thats the end of thoes guys! In the above descriptions, i get the impression that this should -not- be happening, yet im not sure what else to do other than to put them in trees or rough and hit "hide". Why are they still being spotted?
  7. Yep ales. Heck probably more like 4-5 years. Kinda like chess, the game doesnt get old just cause your using the same peices
  8. Thanks for the friendly reply Yankee! I'm about to shut down the PC for the night and get my crap togogether for work tommrow and what not so no problem that ya dont have time tonight. I think im somewhat addicted to this game (again! Used to play the CM:BO demo a lot) so i will certianly have to touch base with you. Damn real life is messing with my gaming time again! lol
  9. For the mission im doing Citadel (Demo) I've tried both digging in and not digging in and i cant seem to notice any differnce between the guys being "dug in" and not dug in. I assume there should be some sort of cover-bonus for them being dug in correct?
  10. and the ATRs still seem pretty much worthless.. im sure im doing something wrong (see questions 1-5 in my inital post)
  11. when talking about projectiles/ballistics/penetration i've noticed that "common sense" doesnt always apply hehe.
  12. Not really looking for an "opponent" as such so ill post this here as well. Hi have played CM:BB several times, and read all the help files (the .doc and the PDF) and have the basics of the game down. I was wondering if anyone could walk me through a game, and let me ask questions and such. This is probably a tiresome thing for a veteran player , but it would be much apreciated. Obviously i would just flat out lose, we know i suck. Looking for more of a "learning battle" with setup suggestions, tactical suggestions, I've got a lot of "general ideas" based on what i've been reading on the forums over the last few days, but specific advice would be awesome Today (Wed Jan 15th) Im off work and would be avial for hotseat or BPEM. I've never played against a human before. Preferably Citadel because thats what im most familar with. 13. Does "digging in" make it easy for the enemy to spot you? I mean digging in, durring setup on defence. Im thinking, durring setup, might as well "dig in" every guy, that way they have fox holes if they need them... What would be the downside to that? Are the foxholes easy to spot by enemy if your guys are "hidden" in them?
  14. hehe wow now thats confusing. The explinations were not conufsing but the "good or bad" part is. If you have a flat surface, im guessing, unless you have a perfect 90 degree angle shot at it, its got a fair chance of glancing off. (with no special AP type round or some such) But with curved, you have , if im thinking about this right... You have a chance that the shot might hit "the perfect angle" spot on the curved surface, or it might not... Hrmm... from a rank-newbies perspective (that'd be me, on this "armor subject") doesnt seem like either of the two are better or worse...
  15. thanks for the tips guys. I've managed to win the senario (just BARELY) with the follow-up tips, but it was more of a "my ass totally got kicked, but i had a guy on just the right spot to take a flag that made it seem like i won. I still dont feel like i know what im doing But im STILL pretty clueless about 90% of the above questions , except for being a little more clear on No1 if anyone could answer thoes (i know its a pain helping newbies sometimes) in a bit of detail i'd apreciate it thanks. 16. This posts refers to Demo Mission Citadel Schwerpunkt Playing as the Soviets Hello, First i want to thank many of you for the help in advance, as well as the general friendly posts i've read so far. I've been researching the basic concepts of CM:BB (having played CM:BO demo quite a bit over the last 5 years or so) I've read all of the CMBB text file and PDF files. As well as played through the tutorial senario several times. I've searched exaustivly through the forums and found several threads that cover the mission im working on (although very breifly) and found one thread: Post Your Citadel Schwerpunkt Scores: http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=000224 that covers it somewhat in-depth. But i have tons of questions, some being more "general" questions , but most are senario specific. If some veteran player could take some time and look at and/or play through: Demo Mission Citadel Schwerpunkt I have some questions based on other suggestions that i've read. Could someone take some time and have a look at the Russian setup in this mission? It would be helpful to understand why they are -not- places well. For the most part (excpet for the SILLY placement of the HQ units waaaaaaaaay in the back) I dont see the setup as all that bad. I've tried this, albiet with only a slightly edited version of the defualt setup.. and what happens is.. sure your AT guns all get to start firing off at once. But that doesnt matter. The "whole german army" just starts firing at maybe 1 or 2 of the at gins first, busts them one at a time and they are all dead within , at max 2 turns. I assume , to get "overlaping arcs" you have to place them fairly close to one another, and they always seem to die -fast-. What am i doing wrong? Side shots? At best i can get sort of "front-side" shots before the enemy tanks notice me. And the AT RIFLES seem worthless, Their range is to short. The guns notice me long before im able to get into anything even -close- to effective range (as listed on the troop info of the ATRs) Help? Generally i dont understand the need for "special spotting" I dont even see what its needed for. Even when all my guys are HIDDEN they spot the tanks -LONG- before they are in rang, with no real "spotting" done on my part. What am i missing? See my ATR comments above, AT infantry have to short of a range to be useful as far as i can tell, they are always spotted before being able to be used effectively , even when i have them hiding. I must be doing something wrong i assume. Pretty much every time , the german tanks kick my tanks asses. I keep the tanks hidden behind a hill, popup for a bit.. fire off a few shots (they almost always glance off or something) then eventually 3-4 german tanks spot me and im dead. Maybe a general overview of what a good setup would be for my troops in this senario as well as some general things that veteran players think im probably doing wrong would be helpful. I know this all takes a great deal of time to read through and answer (as well as play through if your not already familiar with the senario) Much thanks in advance. 17. thanks for the CM:BO vs CM:BB ideas Mike. I did do some searching, The Citadel mission that im working on currently i did find a -few- posts covering the subject, but only a very few. Goes off to see what the text file has to say. *also references his CM2 comment in the inital post* thanks again guys.
  18. bump *now sits down and reads how to win as the russians* *anticipates not understanding half the advice*
  19. its that whole.. not having two nickles to rub together thing... I'll search again for the senario names themeslves.. thanks for the tip... *goes off to try and figure out why the germans hand me my ass every time..*
  20. CBMM Strategy I think there is an asumption, that perhaps i know my head from my ass, having been "around" for many years. I really dont. What im looking for, is a breakdown of strategy ideas used, in each of the Demo senarios. There were long, detailed posts about such things for the CM:BO demos. Are you saying that , in some sense the CMBB demo is not sort of "worthy" of that same type of breakdown?
  21. I've been playing CM:BO on and off for ...hrmm.. Five years? In all that time i've been playing the demo (yes really) but never had the full verision. So last night i figured I'd check out the 'Ol battlefront site, and OMG... there is a CM Update? Barbarossa to Berlin? Yay! I never played CM enough all in one stretch to ever really get good at the strategy. But im back again. Yay. Having said that. I have a few questions: 1. I assume that CM:Barbarossa To Berlin is what , was back in the day refered to as "CM2" ? 2. For CM:BO there were SEVERAL very detailed breakdowns of the strategy for each of the Demo missions. I just spent a half hour using the search feature on the message board, searching for the word "demo" and have yet to find a similar post for the CM:B2B demo. I really could use some commentary on such a thing, but dont want to ask the idiot newbie questions, if such a thread already exists. Linkage?
  22. Interesting thread. Perhaps some links to strategy threads and what not in the inital post as well ?
  23. Being a grandmaster of the CM: BO demo, the CB:BB does seem fairly poor in terms of "fun factor". [ January 13, 2003, 06:31 PM: Message edited by: Troy Spiral ]
  24. Thanks for the FAQ Read through the whole thing, and i swear 25% of it was funny as hell. hehe
