High Command was awesome! I was waiting ages to see a game to come up to that level of realism when computers were advancing so fast. SC is a breath of fresh air! Someone actually picked up on the idea of a true Strategic/Economic recreation of WW2, my heart goes out to the designers. Noone else out there gotta bone? Hello!? They did a good job, it's basic. It's fair, in realism. The AI deserves kudos! It's been ages since something decent has been pumped out and I hope they turn it into a increasingly detailed, accurate, playable game. I'd spend $100 for it. All hardcore wargamers would and most people who play it are hardcore. Come on Axis&Allies is a board game, Risklike. Not in the same category. In that it's fun for awhile. I have played it on & off for 13 years and have beaten some of the most legendary players on the World<Net>.

The Serbians get a small bit of acknowledgement in the back of a history text. While Italy is in all in the history books. For what? I think it would have to be their Navy, and German supplied troops, and Officers trained by foreign German Advisors. Kinda like Germany's Bish. I'd say Italians would win by suicidal battles, perhaps... If I ran Italy I would have had to conquor one nation, besides Ethiopia that actually had 20th century arms.<then be considered a major player> Then again, France... Didn't give a great contribution.<they never had a chance either> Though who would you rather have as an ally? The English channel is rough seas, the man in control of that Op, woudl have had to been a genius. The Brits were ready enough to fight the first columns or two. Their Matilda's were excellent tanks, not enough of them. Given they were the up-to-date ones. I doubt I'd fly a 109 vs a Spitfire, faster better turn radius. Longer flight time...more armament... Only pro on the messerschmits side is it's climb. Great scramble fighter... I saw a German pilot on Discovery hop in both aircraft and he said the room in the Spitifire was unbelievable. You couldn't breath in German fighters. ALSO another pro on the German side was their aerial combat experience. Spanish Civil War. Destroying France and Poland. I know Britian was short on men more than aircraft, so they had mobilized fairly well by the time Germany would have had a clear shot at them. The Airfieds were vital and they pounded them out of existence. Though the Brits put em back together while they wasted time on the British Cities. Also the Germans had excellent gliders, setup and ready. Definitely was thought over, and overturned by Hitler personally a true blunder. Leadership again! Fear! I think that held him back personal blunder would have made him look bad in front of his Generals. As few had much belief in him at the onset of war. Supply was bad for the UK in '40 they had a hell of a time beating German U-Boats. Stop gloating over a victory in France and bringing the 190s into full production would've made a turn in things regardless of previous mistakes. I think like a Big Cat, the German Staff probably feared water too. I say you sink or swim! When this war is chalked up defeat of Britian in any scenario early enough is the end of the game and fairly historically accurate.

Problem is the French take Low countries out in blitz style. Oh, I hate this strategy! I am going to learn to punish the guy that uses it! It may take a few more losses

Though The OP Sea Lion was a Gambit, it was better than barbarossa<the way it was planned> History would have turned out differently with the General Staff more in control than a mentally detiorating Hitler. Italy Military losses 330,000 and Civilian Losses 80,000 Not a bad contribution but definitely a Axis Minor. Yugoslavia Military-300,000 and Civilian-<many slavs gypsies jews>1,300,000

Jersey John! Definitely a need to change the topic name. Got carried away! Yeah, it's true there isn't much to say for a German Naval transport. OCEAN LINERS??? lol Crete did prove German Paratroopers were deadly and that you could use them and capture ports<was Norway a large para op?> and ship the troops in. Hitler made too many decisions for Sea Lion to be feesible. I think he was a 3 as far as General... This game should have expensive elite Paratrooper Corps. The Luftwaffe nearly had the RAF in submission<without any airsupport whatsoever and vulnerable coastal batteries<ships>, after that a bloody battle to get a beachhead, airfields and fortified positions. England was fairly industrial it would have fed Germany well to Conquor Russia. I remeber travelling the English countryside and seeing so many pillboxes. Thousands, they did fear Hitler was comming.

I smoosh Poland, Turn west for the French. By then these top notch players who have yet to share their secrets. Have invaded the lowlands and are short of having an HQ. 2 british air fleets on the coast and really with the MPP plunder from the lowlands France can afford to defend with British backup. The French quickly get experience and then it's a stalemate... I usually buy a 4th fighter with my income and relocate about 3-5 turns into the game for my invasion. Germany is rather broke without lowland and Danish money. It's often that the Brit fleet comes and devours the Germans in baltic and the presence is nerveracking!!!!! Come pass some tip along to counter this strategy.

Regarding the Battle of Britian: The Germans were close to crushing the RAF, which would have given free range on any British Ships operating in the Channel or nearby. I don't know how anti-aircraft holds up against Stukas and He-111s but I assume if they would have destroyed the RAF on time. Even with the weak fuel capacity of the 109. You could get across! Be a great time for Russia to launch a war if prepared...wouldn't you feel being the last Major European Power that it would be your obligation? Then again if the Brits pulled all ships home! They had a massive Navy. It would have been costly but as Cuba was the finger pointing at America so was Britian the knife in the Theird Reich's back.

My first few games vs the AI were entertaining. I would give the AI in SC a thumb & half up. You set it to Expert level and it can be hard if you follow historical guidlines to win. No Spain/Sweden/Iraq...

The Elephant Tank looks Deadly! Couple of Suicide Sappers and Boom! If we put in percentages what did Hitler waste in his Special Weapons program? Purifying Europe Racially? When many of the Jews were specialists much needed for a war effort, even some veterans of the Great War! Dunkirk and the B.O.B. This guy was pathetic! I think the War was in the bag for a tactician....at least for increasing the size of your Empire from medium to huge.

I gotta agree, the French were looking to cut their losses! Germans are good soldiers, they've got more industry and more natural resources and a higher population than France. After Bismark and the formation of the German Empire<franco-Prussian War> there was nolonger any doubt as to the "main" European Power. In WW1 they needed Brits, Yankees and Russians to help defeat them. As well as the next War. France is a has been Power. 1800s they were the Masters of Europe.... Perhaps like the British one becomes overconfident. I have heard that the French and British Navies were as high as 20 to 30 battleships. I know that the Germans weren't allowed anywhere near this figure. That it would've taken till 1946 for the Kriegsmarine to match the Royal British Navy. Ships are expensive and they take time to produce. It shocks me that the Italians have such a huge navy. I doubt it was as effective as it's made out to be in this game. Probably spent 90% of the time hiding in the Adriatic Sea. BlitzKrieg, and Aerial warfare altered the face of Modern Combat. No more stalemates in trenches and no more Isolationism when long range bombers can reach your homeland and destroy all your ballbearing production.. So that you must rely on Sweden, or the Swiss for such valuable parts. The Germans were industrious. They would assemble parts at various factories so that if you bombed one you wouldn't destroy the entire production of say a Fighter Plane. Then, they would assemble them! I know that despite the bombing raids, they did mantain their Wartime production. If the difference was the loss of <100,000 airmen> vs Kursk, Stalingrad, Rostov. It saved lives. I have to admit to myself though it was Britian's and US's sole responsability to open a Western Front Sooner than 1944! It would have saved more lives than had been lost in the previous 4 years of war. It would have been costly in 1943, but it would have been achievable in my opinion. We all know that Hitler was lucky! He got a lot of luck, his own General Staff didn't believe in him at first. They planned to topple him. Only his early victories stabilized his position and then his psycho-attitude.... P.S. Give me Rommel, a thousand tanks, a million men on the mainland of England... What would you have in 1941?

Right now, I'd take Zhukov with a million men from their period into Iraq and I'd give them a fair chance of kicking butt. Why not?

Lavochin in my simulators is considered one of the most deadly aircraft available. Some tend to want to outlaw them. The Yak, can dogfight<easy to vulch at low alts>. I never read much on their armour. I know it outclassed the Germans. The German Panzer 4 sucks. Short range, low ammo and still not as good as a Char1Bis or Somua-35<medium Frog Tank> I wonder about experience? Didn't the Russians get some in the Far East vs the Japanese in 1938? The p-51 the fastest and the Spitfire the most powerful overall... Though really only for particular situations. For a war of attrition on a front were mechanical gadgets aren't as important in snow, ice, mud. Whatever, I wonder... Maybe in some ways it benifited the Russians enough to even them up. Regardless of the weapon used an experienced Sherman or Hurricane pilot will knock the socks off any opposing enemy. Regardless of what they're up against. Mind you in the end you may have to drive the Sherman home only damaging the enemy. Anyone ever heard of an Elephant tank?<another wasted resource> Think the Germans got a little spooked? On a last note on quality, France fell due to lack of hindsight. They had the Blensheim, the Somuas/Chars/Renualts. Good rifles, I don't know about Tommy Guns. Though BEF had them, and they were better than the Machinepistol. The Germans only had 2 great things... IMHO fast moving armor, and the 88s They beat their enemy with #s...They sacrificed a lot of aircraft during the invasion of France. Hitler jumped when he won, off the ground... He was amazed! If I went back in history and I was France. I would have executed a few million people for creating Vichy and for letting the Germans win so easily! Stalin was a neccessary evil. Trosky was inspiring! Didn't Stalin's successor poison him? Wasn't he known to have two webbed toes and another aspect that signaled the sign of the Devil in Eastern Orthodox Church?

The British lost quite a bit on their convoys. Was the Turpitz not a North Sea Raider for that purpose? As well as many subs allocated to the region? Churchill was worried about sending more shipments, he said he couldn't afford the loss and Stalin was upset. Rosevelt could afford it... Britian could not afford to lose a major battle...i.e. Normany... Stalin pressured for a 2nd front...Britian became a small player and Russia a bigger one.. Thus the Changing of the guards. In effect Germany-WW2 made a great change in the World. A power shift! It's odd to think that the Russian Army of WW1 fell like dominos with 15 million men. Though they suffered beyond words and never gave in, during the 2nd World War. Stalin supposedly killed from 30-50 million of his own people.

I fell in love with my first wargame, that was called Storm Across Europe. Fairly basic interface, thoug ahead of it's time. 1989, roughly equivelant to Battlefront SC...better graphics, a little boardgame quality. I then played Eastern Front and beat it in a few days. It does come with AI... the one by SSI, all their games were halfway entertaining though I got bored of pure hex/supply/math combat.<of course it's all math> the difference in real life<chance & all the variables are impossible to match> Axis & Allies was an old favourite! I also love High Command, Iron Cross, Air Warrior 1-3, World War 2 Online<a interface probably unmatched yet in realistic 3-D enviroment Simulation of fall of France combat>

I am not as boned up on the particulars as I was as a boy. I was much in love with history World War 2 and read every possible novel I could in existence about the subject. Though I do know Russia was about Winning the war for Germany. It is afterall the the Beginning and the End of the Third Reich. American and British Strategic bombing contributed to the demise of Nazi Germany. Though it was primarily Russian troops who fought the ground war and died to free much of Eastern Europe and whose battle casaulties have been estimated anywhere from 12.5-25 million. I've heard figures as high as 36 million dead period. The Germans were prepared to fight the Russians. They were not evenly matched. Though in the end it didn't matter. LendLease did provide more than a few junky items. Millions of enfields...replaceable parts...and a lucky few fighters..and whatever junk obviously the Soviets didn't have available. Even a poor weapon, is a deadly one in city fighting. The Nazis inspired hate in the countries they occuppied, at first the Russians saw them as liberators. Though soon felt the wraith of their Idealism<?> Ethnic cleansing... Leibenstrom<sp Perhaps if Hitler would have spent a little less on miracle weapons..i.e. jets, rockets, subs, huge artillery pieces<no practical use>, battleships... North Africa was a sideshow...He could have had a bit extra for a push in 1942 into Moscow the transportation center and destroy it utterly. Likely forcing the Russians on an extreme defensive role. Britian and the US, would have had more production for awhile. Though slowly Hitler would have built a fortress noone could ever penetrate and eventually destroy Britian and then in the end who knows... The War ended IMHO on declaration of war on the US...between that and Stalingrad you spread yourself way to thin. The Western Allies were smart. They had small losses relatively speaking.

Agreed, #s were always the strategy for the Soviets during the 20th century. The Yak was the largest produced aircraft of the War. They had female aces. Think how deadly the Sturmovik could've been with radar! Ju87, was bad need of an upgrade from the onset of the war. The FW190 was the only German plane comparable to the Allies after 1940, save the Russian Yaks. The germans kept to their 109s to the end of the war, as their primary fighter plane. Big oversight if you ask me! Supposedly the Germans caught Stalin's nephew and he confessed that the Russia's were preparing for an invasion of Germany. They had built secret roads. Another spoke of the first smart bomb having been used on an Italian battleship. Though I thought that I had heard the story differently. That a German Rocket/or Bomb was equiped with a remote control and flown down the smokestack of a British Battleship in the Med early in the war. I wonder if thousands of such weapons would have been built... Would it render a Navy useless?

Agreed! Though the Russians had 1 bolt action rifle per 10 men? I can't imagine how bad off Greece, Yugoslavia and the Axis minors would have been. They probably had WW1 weapons, if they were fortunate. The Italians should've been a match for Eastern European Powers, if willing to lose more than 50k in men, per battle.<I think Finland and Italy are closest in Casualties amongst German allies?> The Fins don't have the population to man a big army either. They gave the Russians a run for their money. It is really not a 1st Rate World Power... Just seeing it reflected in the game as equal & better to France is a tough one to swallow after about a year of MPP collection... The Allies had the best tanks, until the Panzer 5 series. Though the Axis leaders and mobility made up for their armor armanent shortcommings. Still<!> I can imagine running an army on a bunch of 1920s equipment as being a real joy against a outfitted Brit/French/Russian Mechanized unit. The Russians shock me! Despite "their Armor," no leadership to begin with. Biplanes mostly and at best during the war the Yakolev. The Italians and Russians should've been about a match for each other without reiforcements from the Motherland. They have a wealth of history... I think they're tired of war, they did have the most powerful Empire in the World at one time.

Your points are taken into consideration. I have done my research over the years, I have heard the leadership was a big part of Italian weakness. They never had any good leadership really, they did serve in Russia. I can't talk very notably about that, as I have checked their WW2 losses and it seems Romania was a far larger contributor as far as lives are concerned<battle casualties> The minute we hit the shores of Sicily<We GIVE UP, we're your friends> the King of Italy was planning to align themselves with the Allies, naturally the Italians weren't very strong believers in their Diktator They executed him! Though come, they did well in WW1 vs Austria-Hungary. I mean, they stood their own, and then some. 5000 French<Southern France> held off an Army of Italians in the Mountains, and it was fortified yes, but hardly a Maginot. The Frogmen, were well thought out! If they would have used more such tactics early in the war<before the Allies were aware> they could have done significant damage. All in all, Italy was a minor Axis power and should be included into the German Economy in the game, as the other Axis Minors. They had no will to fight, they had a bit of a obsolete fighter during the invasion of Russia... though it was equivelant to outdated ME109E... I heard that Ethiopia was morale victory for Italy. It was probably best for them to have layed back, and stayed neutral. Hitler's caring for his Fascist Brother may have kept them out of the war. The fact is Italians in this game are starting with an equal navy in the Med, an army you can beef up enough to hold off a D-day invasion with. 2 or 3 fighters and you may be able to take Suez, Vichy, Iraq with alone...Historically at anypoint during the War the Italians weren't capable of undertaking such operations. They're early failures are statements to that fact. Despite everything, I'm certian the average Italian soldier had a lack of nationilism. A lack of morale belief in a Goverment that was obviously corrupt and a War that probably wasn't righteous. So that is not to belittle the Italians as fighting force. As far as suppy, equipment, and readiness are concerned. The British, French and Russians were far inferior at the onset of war. I would give the French a 6 rating for at least building a wall, WHY didn't they stretch it through ardenne and to the ocean? Not very wise... Italy should be a German Minor... You resupply Italian units, ships, etc... in German ports, controlled hexes. They recieve 125 mpps? Britian gets cut down to that amount early.....

Are given much more credit then is due in the game. I'm sorry but as I remeber the Italians were notorious for losing. In fact Hitler delayed his invasion of Russia to invade Yugoslavia to help his Fascist brothers from defeat in Greece. Don't you think it would be a bit more realistic to give the Italian army a -Experience bonus. A factor of 4 even! I have heard some of the damn'dist stories of their losses.....Borderline Comical

I think some of the ideas in here are very "good" the possability of a naval invasion of the US was nill. Also the ability to place Axis subs where ever the Axis so desire isn't available. They got them through the straights of gibraltar, blocked the Murmansk pipeline. NorthSea/Atlantic/even south Atlantic they would seek asylum in foreign ports<like Argentina> how about designated seas seperated from the game as a strato-aspect of the game. That you assign units to that particular zone for a period of turns and success depending on unit-math. As well as countermeasures by Allied convoys. Air/Sea/Intel... I hate being hunted down like a dog, in the atlantic when I know that in true life the subs hide well and weren't found in large #s till much later in the war by improved Allied countermeasures. If you want solve the American Problem VERY VERY simple! Make the hexes at a point in the map single movement per turn. Plus -supply for Axis landing anywhere in N.America...to the degree it's a waste.. Oh, and another thing, Strategic bombing. Make it more painful I believe. I don't see it used nearly enough and in reality it was devastating to the Axis... As well as demoralizing to the Allies early in the War.... Perhaps minus MPP for countries that don't protect their airspace....a citizen morale penalty if you will.. Off to bed Cheerios

I don't want to be a run on sentence. Though as far as German superiority during WW2. Well, it's agreed that in 1941 the German was the best equiped, trained and experienced soldier. As far as the Leadership, obviously Germany has produced such greats as Erwin Rommel, Manstein, etc...most of the White population in America is German. They call them the silent majority... Even all this included, it's been proven that in actual warfare we kicked their ass. They bit off way more than they could chew. If the French would have had their tanks in mass and READ the the modern tactics of the time. They would have destroyed Hitler. The Somuas and the Char1s made the Panzer II IIIs series look like rolling coffins. They just didn't have good leadership and weren't prepared. Stalin's great purges and personal insanity held him back from possibly invading Germany before vis versa. What did he kill 80+% of his officers? Sheesh! Come on now! Hitler isn't the only "oops!" leader of WW2. Chamberlain gave Hitler half his med. tanks<the T38 which was an excellent tank> comparable to any German tank. What a dumb butt. If the Allies would have listened to people like Churchill, WW2 would probably ended in 1942 with the fall of Berlin. Also America, sat on her laurels whilst her Mother was be busted up left and right. Bunch of weak leadership going on there. Isolationism? Come on, we speak the same language and we are economically intertwined. The War was lost from the onset....
