  1. Major, I use WindowBlinds (actually the entire object desktop suite StarDock Systems) for customizing and increasing my productivity. Unfortunately, when running TacOps with WindowBlinds the game speed slows to a _crawl_, with each 15 second tick taking about 15 REAL seconds. Disable WindowBlinds, and it works fine. It's the most annoying thing, especially as MS uses Stardock technology to handle the skinning process. Any idea what could be causing this? PC specs: Windows XP Pro Tyan Tiger MB (2) Athlon XMP 2100 CPUs GF4 4600 1024MB ECC Desktop at 2048x1536x32x85hz (assorted other addons, details if needed) Thanks in advance.
  2. Sorry about that, Major. Next time I'll repost in the appropriate forum.
  3. I'm new to multiplayer play, and still quite rusty at TacOps in general, but if anyone wants to have a bit of fun I'm up for it. A _smaller_ scenario (think Sposito) to start with, preferably. I'm timely with my email and an opponent could easily expect 2-3 turns per day if they can match said schedule. Not that I require such, though. BTW, I'd prefer defense if anyone wants to test their offensive skills. Email whitesun@bellsouth.net if you are up for it.
  4. Well, I've never played DA, but looking at the screenshots I do not think I could. The maps look all nice and complex but the interface is a throwback from Windows 3.1. The colors are horrendous. I'm not one for raster burn on my retinas. I mean, really. 2D wargames do not have to spend time on textures for polys, high-count models, rendering, light sources, etc... that a full-fledged 3D game does (SoF2, for example). It's mostly about the math that runs the sim. But for goodness sakes spend a -=bit=- of time making the interface look nice. TacOps windows are the nice, easy to look at green color. DA's buttons are _atrocious_ and I personally believe the information at the top could be presented in a much better way... In closing, turn-based games must pay attention to the smoothness of the interface. If I am going to stare at the same picture for 30 minutes trying to figure out where I want my little tank to go, it had better look nice. Or at least not give me a headache.
  5. Well, I just won my first battle as a TacOps 4 owner. Team Sposito, default options. It was absolutely great. I set up the M1064 in the city, entrenchments in a north-south line along the eastern edge of the city, and the APCs with Javelin teams in the entrenchments. TRPs were scattered liberally along the road leading west into the town. The AH64's took position on the north and south map borders. OPFOR quickly moved the tanks parallel to the main road but the 155mm ICM was quickly pointed in their direction. The helos did very well spotting while NOE and slowing the OPFOR advance with hellfires. A few of their infantry units advanced into the valley but were mowed down by a well-piloted AH64. The center eastern entrenchment at the entrance to the city was held for 18 minutes by a brave infantry team that refused to give up even after -= 13 =- minutes of 152mm HE bombardment. Unfortunately, the last team member died in the 18th minute but they provided excellent recon. 6. Ok... so my copy of TacOps came today. The box is certainly more plain than original TacOps for Mac box from many years ago but surely a CD-R is sweeter than the 1.44 floppies that held the first one... Anyway, I fire it up. So many different missions to play. So, I pick one. And I lose horribly. And another. Lose. And another. Lose. Has anyone written a beginner's guide to TacOps? Or would someone be willing this weekend to spend some net.time with me in-game helping me rehone my basic strategies? Thanks in advance...
  7. Hey all, I remember buying TacOps for the Mac back in 1994. At a computer store none-the-less! It ran fine on a PowerMac 6100/60 and I loved it. Unfortunately, my interest eventually passed on to other things and I figured it was gone forever. Then tonight, much to my amazement, I was browsing around GameSpot and saw a banner for TacOps4. "Surely this must be a different game!" I thought. How could have development proceeded on an 8-year old turn-based wargame? Was it now a twitchy FPS? A glitzy RTS with nice little grunts from the infantry units? I was about to pass it off until I viewed the screenshots. It once again captured my interest as a very familiar screen graced my monitor. Kind of like an Avalon Hill game on steroids. Advanced Third Reich without the 12 hour turns. I'm ordering tonight, and hopefully it will make it to my house by Tuesday. I'd pay $40 just to have an updated copy of the game I loved so much almost ten years ago. I downloaded the demo and have OWNED OpFor 6-0. Too bad it's waaay overbalanced. I guess that's a demo for you. A question: What resources are out there for TacOps enthusiasts? I google'd but mostly got MODs for FPS and such. I'm completely burnt out after years of Counter-Strike and Soldier of Fortune. Leagues? Teams? Webpages that list schedules of battles? Etc... Thanks so much for any links you might post! I'm happy that such a great game has resisted the FPS/RTS craze and remained true to its base. Maybe TacOps 4.x could include a game finder similar to more recent internet-enabled games? i.e. Rogue Spear or SOF2. Thanks in advance, WhiteSun
