  1. Maybe it's already been mentioned on here but I noticed that some vehicles are not represented correctly sometimes and wonder if the patch is addressing it. I see a PSW 234 heavy armored car on the label, but the actual vehicle is of a normal 234 8 rad with a 20mm turret. Same with the SdKfz7 with the single 20mm gun, it looks exactly the same as the 37mm gun(looks like the 37mm is the one represented). The Italian 75mm assault gun is turretless, but it looks a lot like a M13/40 tank. Also the Hungarian Csaba Armored Car is exactly the same as a PSW222, even with German markings. Now I will be the first one to say I have never seen a Csaba but I am going to guess if it's a clone of a 222 at least it has Hungarian markings. Just some observations from countless hours spent immersed in this game ... Not flaming, if I didn't love the game, I would never have paid enough attention to notice. 2. Thanks for the info, Sgt Steiner..... I thought it might tbe the "card" too, but my old "card" was the infamous Intel 810 and it looked fine. The vehicle, building and human images look fine....That's why I was wondering if there was some kind of tweak ...

  4. Speaking of graphics ... Maybe someone can tell me what I did wrong. My old box(800 cel, 128MB RAM, Intel 810 "vid") was running CMBB at a snail's pace on the larger screens but with stunning graphics compared to CMBO. My new box(1.7 cel, 256MB DDR RAM, Savage S3 "vid") runs CMBB fantastically, but other than the vehicles, buildings and the soldiers, the graphics quality has gone to hell... terrain, trees and sky up close have the "squared pixel" look. At every resolution setting. Any ideas?. BTW, my old box had WinMe and the new one has 98SE. I figured I'd post here before starting a new thread. 5. Looking for Allied countermeasures? Not too many on the ground... But the 2,200 lb shell that flies out of those US 16" naval guns and those 6 ton tea bags the Brits dropped on the Tirpitz would be a bit of an equalizer, eh?
  6. Thanks for the info...I apologize, the engagement I was thinking of was in August '43 and it is more 3rd Kharkov than Kursk. It involves Das Reich and it seems to be the most successful debut of the Panther from what I have read so far. Here is the text that I found, I could not track the book it's from, it was part of the game briefing... "On 3 August 1943 the Soviets launched Operation Rumyantsev against Belgorod and in the area of Tomarovka, 40 km to the west. Despite their huge losses at Kursk the Soviet's Voronezh Front assaulted with 53rd Army, 5th Gds Army and 6th Gds Army. In addition, old enemy 5th Gds Tk Army with 503 tanks and 1st Tk Army with 542 were also present. Das Reich was sent to the Kharkov area from the Mius, as part of III Pz Korps (with 3rd SSPG Div and 3rd Pz Div) under 8th Army. From 5 Aug through 20 August they take part is a series of bitter battles with the Red Army. At the climax of this last battle for Kharkov, Zhukov orders 5th Gds Tk Army to attack to the west of the city and cut the rail line, blocking the main German escape route. On 22 August Rotmistrov's 18 and 24th Tk Corps and 5th Gds Mech Corps attack from positions south of the Udy River towards Lyubotin and Korotich. Unknown to the Soviets, Das Reich has been assembled in this area with its 80 panzers and some assault guns. Included are 42 Panthers in its newly arrived Panther Abt. By the end of the day 5th Gds Tk Army had lost 184 tanks with only 50 remainng, while Das Reich lost 35 but recovered some of their losses from the field which they held that day. 7. There were 2 that came with the game and I was able to download 2 more from the Scenario Depot (there is also an operation that is in the "testing stages"). Any others in the works? If I was any good at the editor I would do some of the Das Reich scenarios that worked so well in another game. The one I really want to see done is one involving the Panther Abteilung <sp?>, the first real combat test of that tank ... [ October 20, 2002, 01:24 PM: Message edited by: vondeath ]
  8. Thanks for the info, guys ... You've cleared something else up for me. When I last watched "Band of Brothers", I saw what I thought was a PaK 36 being used like a large Panzerfaust(The Carentan episode). That must be the Stielgranate you have mentioned.
  9. Being someone who knows he always has something to learn, I am curious about these two weapons. They are invaluable in low point QBs and are much more mobile than their big brothers while still packing a punch in ambush situations. Normal AT guns always seem to draw a hail of artillery fire and get knocked out after a couple of kills, yet these little guys are easy to hide and easier to move than other AT guns. I can make a decent guess as to their origins... The Puppchen fires Panzershreck ammo and the PAW fires 81 mm mortar ammo? And what was their historical availability? I see recoiless rifles on both sides in the game although I remember seeing somewhere that only the US used them and very late in the war at that. Thanks for your help .
  10. A quote from the website I posted the link for: "A small supply group manages to provide Peiper with enough fuel for his attack towards Stoumont. At this point, 22 Mk.IVH, 9. Mk.IVH and 27 Mk.VIB did even attain Stavelot because of fuel shortages or mechanical breakdown."(Obviously one of those "Mk.IVH" means Mk.V) 12 tanks were destroyed in the initial actions according to this account. So according to that account, 70 tanks never made it to La Gleize to be encircled. Who knows how many men didn't ..... [ October 13, 2002, 02:00 AM: Message edited by: vondeath ]
  11. Considering that Mantuffel<sp> made it within a mile of the Meuse(but 2nd Pz ran out of gas)and also considering that Heer Panzergrenadier units never had enough SPWs and had to make do with trucks(or horses), makes one wonder about the notion of the SS being "ubertroops".... Especially if you read the account of the 99th and the 2nd Inf's fight against the 12th SS... They basically got nowhere... of course in the end they were confronted with the Big Red One, also... . Edit: I just read an account on a website.. one of these days I'm going to remember to bookmark these things.. that had some little tidbits about ObStbf Peiper himself. One had him giving up his command Panther to one of his company commanders whose tank had broken down and actually leading an attack in an SPW(his Panther had actually broken down according to another website). The other has him grabbing a Panzerfaust to knock out a menacing Sherman, only to have one of his staff NCOs beat him to it. Unfortunately, the stuff on this site is so pro Peiper and anti Allies ( They contend that Patton hated Germans when in actuality he had much respect for many of them) I wonder how much is true. I did find a decent account of the battle under http://www.geocities.com/wolfram55/ardennes.html [ October 11, 2002, 10:53 PM: Message edited by: vondeath ]
  12. Thanks for the info, guys .... "The Sanatorium" sceenario available from the Scenario Depot has a decent representative sample of the forces involved in the Staumont attack.
  13. I know I've seen it somewhere, I can't find the site. I am tweaking a scenario to try and represent it. If anyone has a clue as to number of tanks, support and infantry, let me know .
  14. I have the bundle pack, but I have been playing a lot of CMBO lately mainly because I have discovered Tom's Bulge mods and close to a hundred historical scenarios devoted to the Ardennes, including The Sanitorium, which is one sweet regimental level battle, even if it will take me a week to finish it. I have this thing for the Bulge because Close Combat IV was my first computer wargame(it also introduced me to mods, too). Does anyone know of a full scale Ardennes operation? I have been looking to no avail, it may be under my nose and I'm just missing it. [ October 08, 2002, 01:24 AM: Message edited by: vondeath ]
