  1. In reading these posts a couple of points come to mind.

When CMBB was released there was considerable wailing about the removal of SS runes from the European version. The grounds for this were historical accuracy and censorship. There has been a mod produced that rolls back these changes. It is my current opinion that if the inclusion of these symbolic markings does not cause offence then the inclusion of a historic scenario should not either.

My second point leads on from the first. We are all here because we enjoy playing a simulation of war. War is not clean and sterile as other members of this community can vouch. By playing this game we have all rationalized the ethics of playing a game that is about the killing of humans. If we are capable of such rationalizations it is my opinion that we are capable of drawing our own ethical line in the sand about which scenarios we do or don’t want to play. I appreciate that ArmdChair and Leutnant Hortlund believe it steps over their line and I believe that opinion should be respected.

Just my opinion without the benefit of detailed historical knowledge of the subject.

  2. I regret that my knowledge of the uprising is insufficient to form a well informed opinion. However I wish to applaud Rune and the other informed contributors for seeking and joining such a debate.

It has restored my faith in the intelligence of this board's membership, which after some of the recent posts had taken a knocking.

I am looking forward to reading the well argued points.

  3. Oh dear! Hasn't this been done before Here And here and in passing in a number of other places.

I regret that my brain imploded before I could read it all but I do recall that the friendly edge of the map does carry weight when units decide where to run and that BFC et al have concluded that the fundamental algorithms are as good as they can get given the current game engine and the lack of a unit's memory.

There may be 2 versions of the CDV Patch out. Their web site went down for a short while and it was then reported thet the patch files had different version numbers. The runes may have been removed by now.

  5. This may be heading towards a return to the great shoch wave debate. Back in CMBO explosions had a shock wave bubble. This was removed in CMBB for added realism. There has been considerable debate on the pros and cons of this and I believe that there is a MOD out there that will put them back. I know its not a nice graphical dust animation but it might go some way to achieving what you want. With the dust idea there would be added complications as the existance of such dust would be dependant on the ground conditions.

    Just my 2c worth

    MINOR RANT OVER!

Whilst I agree with some of your sentiment, CDV have one achievement, they have got the product into the shops and from there into peoples homes. I have even seen CMBB appearing on some software charts! All this means more sales = more revenue for BFC = more incentive to carry on the good work and produce patches and more importantly CM 3 with the engine rewrite.

For that reason and that alone I am willing to "accept" their involvment with our beloved game.

Sod it for a lark, what the heck are you lot blathering on about?

    [snip]

Nosirreee, CMBO and CMBB are not the best games of all time -- not even close. Steve and Charles and the rest of the little monkeys better get back in their little huts and start figuring out how to make the best bleedin' game of all time and not come out until they do.

Sheesh. You people got no concept of the future.

So will we have to wait 7.5 Million years for it?

IIRC it was to do with the CDV patch including a number of textures, graphics etc which had to be left out due to the CDV version having to go gold earlier than the BFC version to allow for translations and a greater production lead in time.
