  1. I will be playing CMBB and CMAK. No more CMBO for me. I no longer play it now as I find not only the ineffectiveness of MG's annoying but also the inaccuracy of the German tanks makes CMBO lob-sided.

When CMAK arrives I will be playing the Italian terrain 90+ % of the time. I will definitely be re-creating some of the Western Front battles using the much improved engine with the already familiar western front vehicles.

  2. Could someone identify the specific .ini file that has to be modified in order to use 30.82 with an 8X AGP card. I have an EVGA GForce Ti 4600 8X AGP and am currently using the 41.09 drivers. This works well but if I want to use anti-aliasing I have to alt-tab and then bring the application back up in order to see the text. A small price to pay but I would prefer not to have to do that. My other machine has a Jaton GForce Ti4600 4X AGP card and uses the 30.82 drivers with no problem.

If anyone has the specifics with the .ini file and the entry to put in it, I would be eternally grateful.

    Thanks and God Bless.

  3. Don't want to get too far off of the original posted topic but didn't the Germans use Ferdinand tank destroyers in Italy?

I think they did have a handful of these tank destroyers in Italy. Can anyone confirm? Thanks.

As far as the original topic goes, it would be nice to have some of the unique French terrain but IMHO not necessary to re-create some of the battles on the west front. I think as long as they have some of the more common terrain features found in both locations people will be very happy with the much more accurate game engine with the already familiar western front vehicles.

  4. The new Afrika Korps Combat Mission ought to be a real treat for those players who are tired of the old CMBO game engine and it's inaccuracies. I have tried hard to give CMBO another look after playing CMBB for so long and I find myself disappointed with CMBO. German tank gun accuracy stinks in CMBO.

I did some testing with elite King Tigers against a field of Shermans with 75mm and 76mm guns at ranges of between 500 and 1000 meters. The elite King Tigers couldn't hit the broadside of a barn while the Shermans were very quickly bouncing shells off of the King Tigers armor. It generally took the King's about five shots before they scored a hit. Elite crew with a very high velocity gun unable to generate a hit? I honestly cannot play this game anymore. I am going to stick with CMBB until CMAK comes out. At least in CMAK you can play in the Italian theatre and set up scenarios that would have happened in France and Germany on the West front with similar terrain etc.

My CMBO days are over. In other threads I made requests that the CMBO game engine be re-written to come up to speed with the superiour CMBB engine. Ultimately, this has been done with the soon to arrive CMAK. God Bless Big Time Software!

  5. Speaking strictly from a CMBB perspective, check the handbook if you have it. I never used sharpshooters effectively before the handbook gave me an idea I had never thought of.

Sharpshooters work quite well as scouts. If you use the "move to contact" command along with the "hide" command then the sharpshooter will "drop and hide" as soon as he comes into contact with an enemy unit. This works great when you are playing defense. When I want to know where the enemy armored column will be hitting me from then out go the snipers. They are fast runners and can, as the posts above have suggested, pick off the occasional un-buttoned tank commander.

I usually find a good place with a decent view of alot of terrain in a central location on the map and "move to contact" and "hide" my sharpshooter to that spot. Before you know it, here comes the 15 enemy tanks I knew would show up for the dance. I move my armor to a more strategic location and rotate any anti-tank guns I have in the general direction of their arrival and with any luck I will have gotten a little edge on the enemy before the party really begins.

  6. I just recently changed some BIOS settings on my machine related to AGP factors. After I had done this, I also started to lock up and receive these types of messages. In the BIOS, I had manually set the AGP factor to 8X because I have an AGP 8X card. This was a bad move on my part as it blew my ability to play Combat Mission out of the water. I have since reset this to 'AUTO' and it works well without locking up or throwing messages.

Check some of the AGP settings in your BIOS.

You may want to surf out to the website of your video card manufacturer to see if they have recommended BIOS settings for your particular card. I have an EVGA card and their page had recommended settings. This is how I realized that what I had manually done was not good. I hope that this helps you solve your problem.

    Good luck.

  7. Here has been my experience with this issue. I will be testing more when I get home.

When I have FSAA set at 2X I have the blackout problem. When I have it set to 4X I do not have the blackout problem.

    My configuration for those interested:

    AMD XP 2700+ processor

    Window XP Pro

    EVGA GForce Ti4600 8x AGP

    ASUS A7V8X motherboard

1GB of Kingston PC2700 DDR RAM

The problem Hotfix is installed on my machine.

Again, I will be testing more when I get home.

Thanks for all of the help and support.

  8. PCELT- You found the solution! It works! 41.09 with my EVGA GForce Ti4600 8XAGP card can now use FSAA. Turn on FSAA and when you launch Combat Mission and can't see text, just ALT-TAB to minimize the session and when you click on it to bring it back up, all is well and the gun barrels are much straighter.

    Good find Kamerade!

  9. The only advice that I could give you is that if you do decide to with the NVIDIA video card, make sure that you get one of the NVIDIA cards that can run the 30.82 or 41.09 drivers. Preferably the 30.82 driver as this driver will enable you to use all of the functionality the card has to offer. I have two machines currently. Both have NVIDIA video cards GForce Ti4600. I am happy with both. As far as the processor goes, both of my machines use AMD XP processors but Intel seems to be making them faster these days. It appears as though AMD can't keep up. My processors are 2 GHZ and 2.17 GHZ and both are fully capable of running both CMBO and CMBB without stuttering or locking up or taking too long to figure out what is going to happen.

If I had my dithers I would get an Intel 3.06. Get a motherboard that can use the fast RAM. For a gaming machine, it's all about speed.

Just my two cents. Good luck!

  10. Yeknodathon - Just wanted to respond to your last post. I built from scratch a $2000 games machine just for CMBO/CMBB. If you know what to buy, you can effectively upgrade your existing situation and play Combat Mission. I wouldn't worry too much about the NVIDIA drivers.

I understand what these fellas are saying about the driver situation but in my opinion it is blown out of proportion. CM will work with NVIDIA cards running with slightly dated drivers.

Don't be a slave to the latest and greatest mentality. Upgrade your machine and enjoy the game.

    Once again, just my opinion.

  11. Gallagher - I see what you mean about some of the latest and greatest NVIDIA cards not running 30.87. I'm not sure if some of the latest cards out are able to run 41.09? If not then those individuals that have the newest NVIDIA cards are really in a bind.

I tried to run 30.87 with my newest EVGA GForce 4600 8XAGP card and it doesn't like it. This forced me to use the 41.09 driver for this card and lose FSAA.

I had to laugh when I read the post above about someone being able to build a machine from spare parts from upgrading the PC so often. I built a games machine from scratch just to play Combat Mission. The existing machine I had I upgraded just about every component in it so it would play CM without too much delay.

  12. Gallagher - What other software are you running on your machine that just won't run with 30.87 or 41.09 NVIDIA drivers? I mean really, we're talkin Combat Mission here!

I understand your last post and stated that this may have been the reason in my previous post. Could you be more specific about the other software that won't run with the older version of the NVIDIA drivers?

  13. I am running with 41.09 without FSAA on one machine and 30.87 with FSAA on another. Both machines run Combat Mission great. The 30.87 machine is a 2 gig processor with 1.5 GB of 2100 RAM and the other machine is a 2.17 gig processor with 1 GB of 2700 RAM. Both machines have an NVIDIA GForce 4600 card. Both machines are Windows XP Pro.

Looking at all of the posts, I guess my question is, "What's the problem?"

BTS has already stated that the problem lies with the NVIDIA drivers and they also have stated which drivers to use that currently work best with the game. They have also contacted NVIDIA about the issues with their drivers.

Are the posters to this topic concerned that their other software won't run at it's best without the latest drivers?

Ok, I'm under the table now, you can start throwing things...
