  1. Tero:

Yes, Pelit is just about the only serious gaming magazine in Finland, but it really carries a _lot_ of weight when it comes to promoting good games by reviews, perhaps exactly for that reason.

One example: King of Dragon Pass is an indie game produced by A-Sharp. Pelit reviewed it in early '00, ranked it very high. As a result, sales really soared, when compared to other countries - A-Sharp confirmed that Finland was a clear peak in sales.

Now, the magazine has reviewed Combat Mission _twice_ so far - once when it came out, now again when the boxed version hit the stores. I know a lot of people that aren't hardcore strategy gamers, but have bought the game now when it's available without credit card.

  2. Answered the poll, chose the last option. I'd say that finnish market isn't too particular about whether the games are localized or not - usually, only manuals are translated from english. Manual in Finnish, as a PDF file (or something like that) on the game disk shouldn't detract too much from the game itself, and would give no headaches when it comes to updating the game itself.

Personally, I'm happy with english manual, english game - but I know that for some people, manual in Finnish would be helpful.

  3. I'm organizing a Combat Mission "team game" in a Finnish bulletin board, with players taking the role of battalion, company and tank platoon commanders (the idea is pretty much inspired by the Bocage Rumble and Tank Rumble -games organized elsewhere). The battle is quite big in size, with two US battalions attacking against one German battalion. Total on 16 players will take part in the game.

Now, I would ask for volunteers to look over the map, setting and troops I've chosen for the game, and give their honest opinion on few things. Do you think that this game will be at balanced at all, providing all participants with enjoyable experience? Are the units I've chosen, especially when it comes to artillery support, close to what would be historically correct, and balanced? Are there things I should fix in the map? Are there enough flags to make holding the objectives meaningful?

If you're interested in checking the scenario out, drop you email address here. I'll send the map (randomly generated and edited by hand where necessary) to you. All help is appreciated, as I've had very little experience playing scenarios of this scale before.

  5. I pretty much screw up at the Aftermath, as you probably can see from the scores. smile.gif

Biggest problem was that I realized the need to attack some ten turns into the game, and even then I didn't do what would have been best - concentrate the meager forces I have and strike with them. Instead I just probed the flanks and tried to hunt Cogust's tanks with my 'schrecks.

After the "main thrust" was repelled bloodily, I resigned to defend my only flag. Cogust attacked really well, and the game ended with a big defeat.

Anyone else who made the mistake of completely ignoring the road running at the edge of British side of the river in the Economy of Force? I completely forgot to consider it as an enemy attack route, with the result of being flanked bad by Stugs and PzIVs. Luckily my reinforcement Sherman II had a good day, and it eventually got some three tanks and two halftracks.

  6. Okay, it seems I screw up on the Aftermath worse than I thought, against Cogust. smile.gif

I have to admit though, his attack in the end was pro, if not without few strokes of luck.

But I'm pretty happy about the results. Two games at the median, two actually well above it, not bad. Not going to be on the finals, though. smile.gif

One interesting thing I noticed: check section I in scenario Enough is Enough. All the games ended with german victory. In all other sections, allies won. Very interesting. smile.gif

  7. All games done! Just waiting for Torbjörn to send the end result to me on our game.

I'll take this opportunity to thank all those who have been involved in creating this tournament: Nabla, Treeburst, WBW and Winecape - I hope I didn't forget anyone. smile.gif

And of course my opponents. Cogust, Stefan, Tero, Kingfish and Torbjörn. I lost a few, won a few, but had fun all the time. smile.gif

  8. Bad news from the front.

My computer pretty much completely crashed last night. The hard disk seems to be completely broken, and I'm not sure when I can purchase a replacement.

Currently I have completed my games against Tero, Stefan and Kingfish, with ~4 turns remaining against Cogust and Torbjörn. If I´ll get the new hard disk soon, I'll be able to complete those games too before the deadline, as they're almost in the end anyway. It's possible too that I won't get the new hard disk before April. :(

Treeburst and others, try to decide what to do with the unfinished games, I'll follow this board from somewhere. I'll know soon when I'm up again.

  9. I'm definitely against using CMBB on the tournament, though not very optimistic about playing after the first round. smile.gif

The reason is simple: my current hardware (166MHz AMD, 32Mb memory, 12Mb Voodoo 2) barely runs CMBO, even the Economy of Force and Enough is Enough -scenarios are a bit slow to play. Thus, I'm not going to get CMBB before I update my hardware to other than medieval standards... :(

  10. Still 1 down, 4 to go.

Games with Torbjörn and Tero will certainly make it before the deadline. One with Cogust too, if we'll get the turns flying even at moderate speed.

Kingfish has replaced Loke, and luckily is very active player when it comes to completing turns. Still, I'm no too optimistic about making it before Valentine's day. We'll do our best!

  11. I aim for the flags, but not immediately. Usually, in a QB, I check the flags, just to see their general location. Then I turn them off, and focus on the most important thing in my opinion, the terrain. I try to capture terrain more than the flags, though eventually one has to take them in order to win the game.

Rushing for the flags is IMHO simply calling for a direct fire and/or artillery strike. Better to advance slow, safe and secret, if that is possible. My limited PBEM experience with this kind of tactic has been good.

But in the end, it all depends on the situation. Sometimes you have to rush, and sometimes you are forced to focus on the flags early on.
