1. Hi tank grogs,

I'm looking for information about US, British, and Canadian tank crews in WWII. Specifically: ranks, primary and secondary responsibilities (e.g., was there a designated mechanic?), training, verbal commands, standard tactics, and more.

battlefield.ru has some great Soviet oral histories that often illuminate many of the things I'm looking for - is there an equivalent site for western forces?

Any info or pointers greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    :D

    We're plodding along.

I'm making good progress with Ozzie in Head for the Hills. Hobo has suffered some hardware problems, but should be back shortly. I can't wait to end Fire on the Mountain with him - what a nightmare. I-Man and I are also closing to the finish of St. Mere Eglise...

I'm sure we still have a number of weeks to go at our pace.

If that's the only source of the rumor, don't be too worried at this point. I stopped trusting that site after catching them in an outright lie about Java 1.2 on OS X a couple years ago or so.

No. We are just human beings, and it is not given to our hands to decide about life and death. I have a God who tells me "You shall not kill". There is no add-on like "...except if it is a terrorist." or "...except it is a SS concentration camp guard."

I totally disagree that it is not moral to torture a terrorist to prevent the loss of life. If you were one of the 50 saved and you felt guilty, I would feel sorry and recommend councelling, but torturing that terrorist was the moral thing to do. I'm not sure what it is about today's society that leads to this "moral equivalence" (a topic that is all the rage in the media) where intent and context are thrown out the window. Some acts are evil and it is good to prevent them. However, I do agree that this is not a black and white issue. If you weren't sure the terrorist had the information you needed, things get a little dicey.

As for God... My God (and my government) say it's OK to kill in self defence. Not only is it OK, it's encouraged to save your own life in that situation. And, it is in our hands to determine life and death! If you have a serious illness, do you go to the doctor, or do you leave it in God's hands?! The challenge we all have is to use our intellect to act morally to benefit ourselves and others. Unfortunately, not everyone in the world agrees.

    My 2 cents.

  5. Thanks for the links, guys.

I downloaded both OneClick and PBEM Helper and I'm having difficulties with each!

One Click - looks good, but it doesn't support my video resolution (1400 x 1050), which totally cripples it. It doesn't automatically load the PBEM file or enter my password. I don't understand what the resolution has to do with that... But, I see it's mentioned in the readme.

PBEM Helper - This is much more promising. It starts CMBO and the PBEM file is loaded, but it doesn't enter my password.

The CMBO intro movie is disabled.

I've given up on One Click since it seems it just won't work. Anyone know why PBEM Helper doesn't enter my password?

    Thanks,

And that, my friend, is the only thing that kept the US from becoming Canada's 11th province. (OK, 10th province at the time... Newfoundland was late joining the confederation. They're 30 minutes behind, you know.)

    How about pre-targeting?

You can only target when you see, why not to make it possible to pre-target, so you could tell the crew to wait for some unit to appear in their views unless critical danger occurs.

AFAIK, you can pre-target. Just target the enemy unit and a red line should "stick" even if it's out of LOS. The manual says that your unit should then attack the unit when it moves into LOS (assuming there are no higher priority targets it needs to engage).

I've done this, but it's hard to tell how well it works.

  8. Can someone provide some references or just a short summary explaining the various German infantry types (does searching work for anyone?? smile.gif ).

I'm looking for background on what the unit type's purpose was and where they were used historically. For example, are security platoons just garrison troops or what?

    Thanks,

Suggest that you watch for a rebroadcast of "World War II In Color" on the History Channel. It is a series of shows where all the footage was originally shot in color. After seeing WWII in black and white, it is very unsettling at first to see all that color footage!

If you can't wait for a rebroadcast, I found the DVD of this show. You can get it on Amazon (of course): Amazon's WWII in Color

Here's my problem. . say i see a large concentration of enemy troops in a large pine forest. Now i start to shell them, trouble is, with LOS, my shells land in the field in front of the forest and only up to about 30 m into the forest. Why o why, can't my FO tell the arty crews to add 50 or 100m so that my shells land amongst the woods and not just in front?

Maybe I misunderstand the question, but I use FOs to call down strikes that are not in the FO's line of site. It just takes a little longer for the shells to start falling and accuracy is not as good.

What happens when you try to target an area out of LOS?
