  1. Okay, Okay,

    Here we go,

    I guess I've decided (in an Eeyore sort of way) to enter the one true thread (the peng, or whatever the hell that's supposed to mean). Yes, yes, a quick sod-off to the lot of you, but I understand that I'm to specifically challenge an individual. Oh me, oh my. So, here goes;

Eat dung, elvis (lower case "e" intended). May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your groin. You can barely manage the OOmph to give a good "wankers" call occasionally, and I pee in your general direction. Your mother was a gopher, and your uncle smelled of boysenberries.

    Does that suffice?

    No?

Well, then , Ok, You have not the balls to meet me on the field of battle, and I hereby slap you repeatedly with my leather Field-Glove-O-Love. Were you the real Elvis, you'd at least have the grace to die upon the toilet of infamy, instead of spewing your random drive-by pedestrian insults.

    How's that?

    Not enough, you say?

    OOOOokkaayyyy,

Elvis, you couldn't process a turn in less than a fortnight, even if your favorite dog were the soup-de-jour of all the Vietnamese restaurants in San Francisco!

Does that work? Should I be more specific?

Elvis, you are but a zit on the arse of the largest prostitute in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Does that work? Have I challenged you personally enough? No?

OK, I guess I must continue. You, sir elvis (of the infected pelvis), are not worth the stick it takes to scrape the dog-doo from my shoes. I spit-at-thee, I spit-at-thee, I spit-at-thee.

Ok, I'm spent. If there is anything at all glandular that keeps your legs from rubbing together, you will send a set-up my way, so that I may prove that Elvis is, indeed, dead and rotting.

So, all the rest of you,

    BUGGER OFF!!!

Months? Years? How's about a lifetime? CM Rocks! Shogun was pretty good, but interest faded quickly over time. The more I play CMBO, the more obsessed I get with the game. I've become a Combat Mission Zombie.

Hello. My name is Leeo, and I play Combat Mission. At first, I used to just play it now and then, you know, just socially. Then, before I knew it, I was playing CM alone. Then I was playing CM before I went to work, and as soon as I got home. Next thing you know, I'm posting to the CM forum.

  3. Jason, as always, this was an intelligent and thoughtful post. Though I don't always have the patience/time/inclination to read all of some of the long posts you produce, I am confident in the knowledge that the information you provide has been well thought, often tested, and usually researched historically. Thanks for all you do!!

  4. As long as your on-map mortars are within the command radius of an HQ unit (dark red line between mortar and HQ unit), the HQ unit can be a spotter for the on-map mortar. Check the LOS from the HQ unit, and then use the target command from the mortar unit to specify a target. If the target is within line-of-sight (LOS) of the HQ unit, then the targeting line from the mortar will "stick" to the target, and the mortar will fire at it's earliest convenience.

Off-map artillery spotters (mortar spotters included) just use the targeting command to designate a target, and the time delay 'til the shells start falling appears in the unit info window.

    Hope this helps!

Man, you too! So did I. But once in a while, with older stuff, when a rock hit a bunker or tank, we'd set it on fire. The rules were pretty tight. No throwing directly at the target though (that was gamey biggrin.gif ). It had to be a mortar style shot of up and over. And any plastic guys not fully knocked over were allowed to be reset between turns. I must have had a couple hundred soldiers, a dozen tanks and vehicles; we'd spend hours just setting up our lines.

Thanks for reminding me of all that. smile.gif

WOW!! A buddy of mine and I used to play a game on the beach where we had driftwood sticks to represent men (25 each), which we could maneuver each turn the distance of a long stick (about a yard). We built sand castles, ,and the goal was to take over the other guy's castle. For each "man" (stick), you could stand about where that stick was and lob a rock underhand at the enemy. The exception was, from the castle (about 30 yds from the "enemy" castle) you could whip a nice heavy rock overhand. Any sticks ("guys") the ended up leaning past a 45 degree angle were "casualties". and removed from play. Boy was that fun!!

(sorry for being OT, but the memories came flooding back!)

  6. I think the Magic is There for several reasons:

It is like solving a new puzzle each time. How do I achieve the objectives with the tools at hand?

It is like reading a new fiction book each time. Will the hero prevail and survive?

It like a history lecture each time. How did more numerous yet generally inferior Allied tanks defeat the German armor?

It is a new lesson each time. How did fighting in the fog affect my strategy as well as that of my opponent?

It is a new war movie each time. How can that tank survive such an intensive artillery barrage?

It is a new moral dilemma each time. Would I break and run like that squad just did, or would I stand my ground 'til the barrel melted down?

It is a way to reach out and touch someone new. How about a PBEM game?

    And much, much, more...

    Indeed, the Magic is There!

I think CM's LOS tool is among the most realistic and useful available. How are you really going to know that a unit can see from a point unless you send a unit (either yourself, but a commander cannot be in all places at all times; or a subordinate unit)to that spot to "see what you (they) can see".

And as far as hull down, IIRC, that has been discussed myriad times in that a vehicle's hull down status is completely dependent on the position of other units. You can be hull down to some, but not others. If the others move, you will either be unable to see them anymore, or lose your hull down status. That's the beauty of full 3D modeling; There is no perfect "hull down" position. If you want to have your vehicle go hull down, you should use the hunt command in any case.

  8. I'd heard a little about it last year, and knew it was a game that I would need to have. I received it as a Christmas gift. Then I put it on the computer, and I almost cried, it was so feckin' beautiful. Everything I could've hoped a computer wargame could be. Then I looked it up some on the web, and found this great BBS, with a community of intelligent people committed to playing and improving the game-of-games. So, now my life is consumed by the glorious, ever-improving CMB0! (wipes tear from corner of eye) Now that I've started playing PBEM, I've reached some sort of gaming paradise. Anyway, enough of my prattling on...
