  1. The blast cone of the 90mm is enough to kill somone. In fact you could go deaf from the blast or even be killed if you did not have your helmet on.
  2. Hey I just put some oil into my computer and it doesn't work any longer! Thanks Panzer leader=(
  3. There is a monument to the Polar Bear Division here in Troy, Michigan. The division was recruited mainly in Michigans UP, mainly made up of Finnish immigrants. I won a photography contest for my picture of it. Strangely enough my picture of a road sign right by the cemetary did not win. I guess the polar bear division>exit 69 Big Beaver Rd. Its the White Chapel cemetary. I believe they were meant to hook up with the white russians along the trans siberian rail way. They never got far out of Archangel.
  4. "Tanks were fitted with hedgerow cutters, and extensively used to support the infantry - but with limited success..." Limited success???? I'd have to say they were a HUGE success. I'll use the accounts of Belton Cooper as evidence to support my assertions. "The comparison between this operation and the operations in the bocage country, south of airel, was astonishing. Previously, it had taken twelve days to penetrate 8 miles. Including the operation around Viller-Fossard, our total tank losses had been eithty-seven. In the first phase of Operation Cobra, from the morning of July 26 through July 28, the division moved forward seventeen miles to Coutances with the loss of only 2 tanks. The lessons were straightforward. The hedge choppers, although we had fewer than half of those ordered, allowed the tanks to break through the hedgerows at a number of points simultaneously with out forewarning the Germans." Sorry I cringe when the importance of having 2 oversized armor divisions (the 2nd and 3rd)tanks' "uncorked" is marginalized. Bypassing the German kill zones with the use of hedge cutters allowed both the U.S. infantry and armor to move out. It was still slow going till they got out of the hedges, but much more rapid than without them. Could this be the key differnce between the sucsess of Cobra vs. Goodwood? A distinct possiblility. I would still need to see more hard data on the amount of troops in each sector and exactly how many hedge cutters the Brits and Canadians had installed before the Goodwood Operation. Coopers book is: Death Traps The survival of an american armored division in WWII/ Belton Y. Cooper. Published by Presido Press, Inc Printed 2001. Copywrite 1998 I've read other accounts that pretty much state the same thing, but this is the only book I have handy to quote from.
  5. It would have to be my opponents heavy mg42 crew that took out my sherman mark III or V. One squirt of lead and next thing you know my sherman is knocked out. I asked my opponent what got that Sherman and he verified the MG crew got it
  6. I kept having shutdown problems with my athlon 1800+. I took the case off and no more lock ups or shutdowns. Yes most of the time having the case cover off is bad for airflow, but my copper fans throw off a tons of heat that i need to have it open. Putting a case fan in the back and drilling extra holes didn't help. Right now I am attempting to drill case slots on the side panel right where my chips are located. My dual processors are located right under the power supply. The extra heat was also causeing hardware erros (the one I kept getting was a CDrom controller error). I'll post back if cutting slots in the side of the case works.
  7. I checked it out and the CD-rom error was a controler error. I replaced the cable and have opened up my case. My problem also has to do with heat spikes on the Athlon chips. Mine are 1800+MP's. I'm modifying my case to include giant heat sinks. With the case open I can run it for hours. [ 12-16-2001: Message edited by: Hedgehog ]</p>
  8. I get this CD-rom error everytime I run CM on my new windows 2000p machine. Is there anyway to get rind of the annoying cdrom use by the game while its playing? Would uninstalling, then installing it from the HD eliminate this? Here is what happens with the error. I load up a game and get into the map screen. I hear the cdrom drive whirring at this point. Then a short tim after I have been flying around the screen the cd-rom stutters and then sounds like its moving at a slower speed. Thats on my 98 machine. When it gets to the point of the pause in 2000 it crashes. Everything freezes and the sound loops. I look in my event viewer and I see that there is a controler eror for the cd-rom. (I'm replacing the cabel today). Will installing CM from the HD get rid of the annoying cdrom noise? I like to sneak a game or two at night and it makes so much noise! (I use headphones for the sound)
  9. I am having the same problem too. I do not have thermal sensors but when I put my hand near the powersupply outtake fan man is it hot! When I run it with the case off I don't have any more error/shutdown restart problems. I have added a case fan and a slot blower. It has helped. My power supply is right above the chips and video card. I'm looking into cooling solutions so I can play CM on my new machine. I will post if I find something better than what I have. (what I need is a miniheat pump like we use in serverrooms if the AC cuts out.)
  10. This one gets the Lee Marvin rating. (Only Lee Marvin himself could pull this off.) I don't think that most people would win as allies first time through. The axis (computer) scored a minor victory against me. I also played about 20 turns as the Germans to test some things on the map out. The things that need to be corrected mostly have to do with roads that are too steep. There are 3 spots that I know of that need fixing. The first is on the road up the back of the mountain. I couldn't get a tank up the first part of the hill. (I would bet that some of those other spots are too steep too, but couldn't get up to test them.) The next spot is the road next to the mountain that leads to the double bridge. The third spot is the bridge that leads to the island part of town. I had a hard time as the allies. I put the bulk of my force on the road that leads to the double bridge and tried to feed my vehicles up that road. I had recon vehicles on the middle road too. Those guns on the mountain picked off my armor very slowly. I did waste some armor just trying to see if I could move AFV's on some hilly terrain. (They got picked of by AT guns in the town when I tried that.) To get rid of some of the guns I used my 105's to shell the gun positions. Those took out the ones not in the pillboxes. Then I found shadows where I could not be hit from the hill top for my tanks to move up into. I then tried to isolate fire on one pill box at a time. I used the regular m4's for that. I managed to knock out every gun on the hill except one 75pillbox. I had 3 tanks left over from trying to quiet the gun emplacements. When my rienfocements came I ran the tanks down that road past the point where they could be hit by the remaining 75pillbox. There they fought with the tanks defending the town. I lost all my tanks on that side, but the germans only had the panther left, and it was immobilized. Too bad I only had a few m4's and an HMC left over. So I found some shadow positions where my m4's and the HMC could empty thier ammo on troops that occupied the town. On the last turn I sent my m4's out in different directions in an attempt to kill the panther. To no avail. The panther killed both m4's. I only managed to get one victory location. I found those fords very useful. (I think you should have a section of woods that extends down to where the middle ford is, you should give troops at least one viable way of getting to a ford with out getting all shot up. All the other ways are either in the open, mined or have barbed wire across them.) Then I tested it from the German side. I found some road spaces impassible. Also the bridge that is supposed to be blowable didn't go up like it should have. Do I have to wait till enimy units are near it for the thing to blow right? Playing against the computer the AI used those arty rounds to attack my units. Not what you intendend them to do I think. I liked watching the AA fire at the attacking airplanes, but no planes were shot down. The arty was about right, I just put my spotters in a bad place. (I lost one of them and the rest got shot up. ooops) I just wasted my 240mm on the pillboxes. With the last 6 left I targeted the town and took out an AT gun. I should have used all of them on the town. There is also this pyramid in the middle of town that is mainly road. You might want to flatten that out too. (on the island) I know how to attack it now and think I could take the town the second time I tried against the computer. Playing against a person is another thing entirely. Good work, I found it a fun puzzle. I came close to solving it too :
  11. BTW ZA is much better than Black Ice in that it doesn't allow bots to acxess the web. Heres a good article for you admin types out there http://grc.com/dos/grcdos.htm Black Ice and ZA are put to the test and Black Ice fails. ZA is also free The only problem with ZA is that it can block DHCP broadcasts and prevent you from obtaining an IP if you are on a cable modem. To avoid this don't have ZA set to start when you boot your computer up.
  12. To run ZA with CM just: 1.make sure ZA is on 2.start CM and select tcp/ip 3.fill in ip address 4.hit ok 5.ZA should then ask you if you would like CM to axcess the internet. 6.check the box in the lower right hand corner so that settings are saved and you don't get prompted everytime CM wants to use TCP/IP 7.click yes to let it axcess the internet Thats it. I just tested this to make sure it works and it does.
  13. I like the PIAT because it is harder to tell where it is being launched from. I've had scenarios where a PIAT was shooting at me and I didn't even identify where the crew was. <----- thats what the PIAT crews were doing to my Kingtiger crews
