  1. FWIW I just ran across a quote from no less an authoritative armor expert than Steve Zaloga who wrote the following in his Osprey book "Panther vs Sherman, Battle of the Bulge 1944"

    IkNie.jpg

Zaloga cites various references in his book but the French source "Le Panther 1947" is not one of them, so we cannot say for sure where he came up with his own 20 to 30 second target acquisition information. It sounds a bit close to be a coincidence to me, however.

I just thought I'd toss this into the mix since it seems there is more than one source for this information, though we may in fact be dealing with one source quoted multiple times.

  2. Does anyone have information on what American armor unit may have been involved in the battle? As far as I can tell, there isn't much information from the US side of things.

I doubt it ever even happened, at least not as described in the scenario. Apparently, no American armor units recorded losses anything remotely approaching this scale in this time frame. Barkman was said to have been involved with one incident against a mechanized cavalry recon unit that lost a couple of M5's and M8 scout cars and some jeeps to his guns, but that is all I've been able to find that can be corroborated...and that is from Wiki.

I have my suspicion that a lot of these "tank aces" victory's were overblown at the time for propaganda purposes back in the Reich.

  3. We can make all sort of informed guesses about what will panic a tank crew in a given circumstance but none of us have actually been there to say what we did on the occasion. We are left with anecdotal evidence and our best WAG's of what is most likely. A somewhat liberal (and statistically variable) estimation of the range of likely crew behavior would seem most reasonable to me. Steve and the BFC guys seem quite adept at sorting out this sort of question. I can live with what they come up with.

  4. Oh no you didn't!

Tell me those beautiful banknotes not got slagged of by a fat fingered Yank who wouldn't know a good looking currency if China went and introduced one to the USA.

    *yawn*

And that is after the re-design to make the notes less dull and same-y. Come on now!

No sir, the only thing wrong with the Dutch banknote is that we got rid of them so we could join a monetary union with those delightful Greeks!

Elmar, I'll take all those nasty old dollars off your hands, no need for you to fuss with them. :D

  5. The problem with these so called different points of view is that each culture in the nation thinks that their point of view should be adopted, a classic example is the Muslims wanting us to adopt sharia law.

What you say may happen in an ideal world, but most of us live in reality, the majority of immigrants coming out here just add to the welfare burden, and it's hard for them to share their point of view or experiences with us when many of them cannot even speak our language.

I'm curious to hear your sources for the fact that Muslims want you to adopt Sharia law. All of them? Also for the comments that immigrants coming to your country add to the welfare burden; how many do go on welfare, do you have figures? By the way, how many immigrants, percentage wise, cannot speak English when they arrive? And after a year?

Do you have actual data for these comments or are you simply repeating things you have heard on TV or other people say?

I mean no disrespect, every country has its problems, but one problem that they share in common is people making generalized assumptions based upon rumor, gossip and political propaganda. :)

If you are not inclined to answer it would probably help this thread get back on track to the issue of perceived problems playing CM:N.

  6. Thank you Vanir and I now understand akd's rather laconic reply. Knowing Steve from his postings here, I'd think there's a snowball's chance in hell of this ever getting looked into again since they've made up their minds on it, no matter what some of us may think. My solution would be for dead tanks to become neutral objects with no LOS/LOF through them but apparently that is not something they can easily program.

  7. Thank you Bruce K and welcome to the forum. The original poster was looking for possible scenarios for an all black unit for this game. Unfortunately, the game does not at present model AA assets so even though your Dad's unit was there it is not one that can be represented until later modules are released that do have the various AA guns. I take it that your Dad's unit, being mobile, was truck drawn quad .50's and 40mm guns? Or did it have the M15 and M16 half tracks?

  8. A tank alone against determined infantry equipped with at minimum grenades and improvised weapons (e.g. stuff to jam the tracks, etc.) should, in my mind, fear for its survival. Yes, if the infantry lack confidence or luck and get caught in front of the guns or tracks, that is one thing, but if they manage to mount the tank and work on the various weak points in the armor (hatches, view ports, air inlets) with luck they should be able to find some way to force the tank crew to bail, at which time they will be most vulnerable to the infantry weapons. US WP grenades were said to be very effective for this sort of thing, like most WP weapons. Everyone fears fire and even in its absence, the tanks crew is forced to breath whatever noxious fumes do enter the turret and hull.

American tanks in the PTO had to deal with very pernicious (and often effective) attacks from Japanese infantry. While some were suicide missions, some were not. The point is that the Americans learned that tanks had to stick together so they could, if necessary, shoot infantry off each other with the tank MG's. Sending a Tiger, or any tank, alone into an area where enemy infantry abound is to ask for its sure destruction at some point.

  9. There's been another report of this, yet we can't reproduce it. If someone has a save of this, that would be great. Short of that... what mode was this played in? We suspect WeGo of some type, but that's just a guess and so far it's yielded nothing.

    Thanks!

    Steve

Steve I just saw your post and I realized I have a save game for this. Where and how do I send it?

  10. Ok that is logical.

So the segregation extended mainly from the "Jim Crow Laws" ?

Is it the legacy of these laws that the US has been particularly outspoken on the race issue and especially so in regards of apartheid in South Africa?

Sort of; it's more like someone saying "I fixed my halitosis, why can't you do the same?", while eating a limburger sandwich.

  11. Your exactly right about Narses.

I was reading a book called "Hammer of the Goths" when I needed a log on name so I chose Narses and btw I'm about the same age as Narses when he made his mark as a great general replacing the even more famous Belasarius.

  12. This thread has nothing to do with internment, but rather the service of African Americans in the US Army in WW2.

I was wondering as well why it was that Afro-Americans served in segregated units but native Americans served in integrated units?

It has to do with subtle differences in the contemporary historical American definition of racism. Blacks were originally brought to America as slaves and were subsequently regarded as lesser versions of humanity to be kept separated from whites, whereas native Americans were seen as some sort of aboriginal noble warriors, deserving of some respect, and who were traditionally integrated into standing armies as scouts and pickets because of their skills and warrior traditions.
