  1. I have thoroughly enjoyed the two demo scenarios of CMAK - it's nice to get back to the western theater (no offense to our Russian comrades).

I couldn't help but noticing though, that when a US rifle squad is selected, the "rifle grenade" icons look just a little too "phallic."

Is it just me or did anyone else notice this? Perhaps one of the graphics designers had just finished looking at a Victoria's Secret catalog when they built the rifle grenade icon.

    ;)

Again, great game - can't wait to get it.

  2. I'm in the middle of playing Strontium Dog's scenario that he references, and it is excellent! He and I were pondering the historical accuracy of using 8" artillery as part of a "hasty" attack by a company-size combined arms force. I had wondered if a couple 81mm mortar spotters would be more historically accurate. (But - the 8" stuff is a lot of fun to use, and it makes a big mess!)

  3. You all might laugh, but when I read this question, the first game that popped into my head was "Second Front" by Gary Grigsby. This was an early SSI game published around 1990. I know it's totally outdated and archaic by today's standards, but I still remember how much I enjoyed playing it! Maybe it's because it was one of the first true computer wargames...and the novelty factor "hooked" me. Whatever.

    Anyway, fast-forward to the present...

I really enjoy East Front II and West Front by Talonsoft, although I think these are really considered "tactical" level games. I know that the mechanics are perhaps oversimplified, but for me, the scale, the historical "feel" and the miniatures-ish look of the units is perfect.

The Operational Art of War (Wargame of the Year Edition) is a great operational-divisional scale game. Again, I know the game mechanics may not be as hardcore as some "grognards" would like (where the hell did that term come from?), but I think it has the perfect mix of playability, realism and scope.

Sorry for the verbose response...blame it on the Shipyards that I've had (Mainers will know what that is).

  4. I tried to get interested in SP all over again once SPWaW was released - but I couldn't. The reason why is that I think the Talonsoft games (West Front & East Front) are MUCH better than SP. The unit encyclopedia is excellent, the maps are better, the scale is larger...I could go on and on. Anyway - I really enjoy CM for the tactical stuff, but when I want a larger scale battle, West Front/East Front is the way to go. SP seems very dated...even with the new sounds.

  5. I think it's a proprietary chipset. When you read the specs, the chipset/graphics processing unit is listed as being "RADEON" (trademark) - and it uses something that they are calling the "Charisma Engine."

Schrull - thanks for the tip re the new drivers. I didn't know that Rage3D website existed. The driver they have posted is a newer version than the beta posted on the ATI site. I'll give it a shot.

  6. I just installed CM, and have been playing it successfully without any problems, except one: the detailed unit description "pop up" box FLICKERS...as does some of the in-game text (unit ID's, hit chances, etc). The demo had no such flickering.

I think it might be related to my new video card, which is an ATI Radeon 64DDR AGP. Has anyone had this problem? It is annoying!
