  1. The only REAL problem I forsee for folks new to the CMx2 scenario editor will be scripting the AI plans. Apart from that, it's quite easy to get a good looking map up and running in a single afternoon. And it's WW2, not Modern Era Syria where the two sides are perceived by many as being so mismatched. Lots of folks WANT to create WW2 missions so I think we'll very quickly see lots of new stuff appearing soon after the title is released. True, some of it might not be 'very good' but then, as long as the community is forgiving, (and this community appears to be very forgiving indeed of its scenario designers) folks will be encouraged to get better as time goes by.

The potential killer to community creativity might be overly-negative feedback from players with unrealistic expectations discouraging new talent as it attempts to find its feet. Hopefully, there won't be many of these negative ninnies crushing the spirit of creativity here. :) We need to nurture the new talent. I know that many of the existing, experienced scenario designers, both on the Beta team and here, will be very eager to help the new guys out wherever possible, especially with regard to scripting the AI. So there's every reason to be confident that a lot of new content will appear.

BTW, I should have a 16-mission campaign more or less ready to go shortly after the title is released.

I must say I didn't see many overly negative comments over at the Proving Grounds when CMx1 scenario's were being uploaded daily. Sure, you always find someone who is not very diplomatic when posting feedback but good 'negative' feedback helps improves the scenario (if the designer decides to act on the comments).

One excellent tip given to me many years ago by (I think) Mad Russian was, make a small scenario first and once you got that right and gained confidence, move onto something bigger. Never start off big! (except if your George Mc ) :)

And good luck with your 16 mission campaign. How long did it take you to put together?

  2. Nothing's perfect, and I'm sure we'll see a few dogs. But I'm guessing that nearly all of the experienced scenario-makers from CMSF will be jumping right into Normandy. They'll have to learn some new tricks, but they already have tons of experience with the engine.

I agree, CMSF scenario designers should have advantage when it comes to working with the editor. But are those designers interested in designing WW2 scenario's? There is one scenario designer I hold in high esteem when it comes to putting together large (and huge!) historical scenario's and that is GEORGE MC. I know he's put together CMSF scenario's but I bet he's rubbing his hands together with glee working with CM Normandy. Hopefully there will be some of his work included when the game is released.

For the small to medium sized historical scenario's you can't beat Mad Russian. I also hope he starts work on them once CM Normandy is released.

  3. For the first year at least, good user-made scenarios will come out faster than you can play them.

I don't think so. I'm guessing the CM Normandy editor will be more complex than the CMx1 editor so this alone will slow down budding scenario makers. Plus keep in mind when they do start appearing, you will have to sort out the wheat from the chaff. This was done superbly by Gary when he set up the Proving ground (place to test your scenario's) and once the major bugs had been ironed out by play testers, the designer could move them over to the Scenario Depot (we are talking CMx1 scenario's) or BF's repository. Of course no scenario designer has to do this but I think it would be wise to give the scenario a good workout by play testers otherwise you could be sending out a turkey and players will avoid your next offerings.

  4. As far I know, in CMSF a soldier can only acquire individual weapons and not crew served weapons via buddy aid. So, assuming I am correct, and that this hasn't changed for CMBN, a truck driver could pick up an MG42 with a bipod, but not man an MG42 mounted on a tripod. When the Commonwealth module is available a truck driver will be able to pick up a Bren with a bipod, but not a Bren with a tripod.

Gold star for that man! That's the best answer so far.

  5. Is is my imagination, or do some beta testers insist on making unhelpful snarky posts on every thread. Over defensive beta testers will not make this a great place to be. They were very culpable in destroying the early CMSF forums IMHO. Reading a few threads today I can see the same shaping up here. Nice job.

Good to see other people have noticed this. Hopefully more people can post here without being jumped on.

  6. Been reading this thread with interest and thought I would share my views :)

I must admit I was surprised to see BF charging for patching AK and BB. Both games are old but much loved by many players worldwide. It has been the players (and clubs) who helped extend the life span of both games by giving away for free scenario's, operations, mods and articles explaining about tactics, weapons etc. Part of my surprise I have to say is the complete turn around by BF. Countless times players mentioned the Vista problem and every time we were told, 'it's an old game and there will be no more patches'. As a self confessed fanboy of the CMx1 games, I just glad BF has seen the light and made it possible to play the games on Vista but charging for the patch? Hmmm....

  7. As Vista was not on the market when these games were produced, the comment by Redwolf is absurd. As I recall, when Combat Mission:Beyond Overlord first came out, the Windows XP system had not been produced, but this WAS updated to include it on the OS, so it CAN be done, IF Battlefront choose to do so.

What is needed, is for Battlefront to sell the rights to CM1/2/3, to, say, "Sold OUT".

They will then update it for VISTA and sell it at £4.99 ( UK ) a time! If they don't plan to update these games or do anything with them, then they should sell the rights to them.

I would suggust that people visit HPS Simulations Website and try their games.

They have updated them all to Vista ( and are likely to update again re any new OS ).

No one from BF is listening any more. They have turned their backs on the CMx1 games. The only people who listen now are the players.

  8. Nope, we're just one tiny developer and one voice. The customer (and specifically, MANY customers) have a far louder voice than we do.

Then may I suggest that BF posts here saying that they will approach Nvidia but need customer support to do so. I think Moon you will be very surprised how many will step forward and support BF's action.

Many voices shouting together will be heard! :)

  9. guys what gonna happen with cmc .it will link to bb for the combat scenes and if bb doesnt work right with nvidea equipped computers a lot of new players are going to be disappointed. technically battlefront are knowingly selling faulty goods, wont go down well with the powers that be where i come from, or battlefront have you a patch lined up for the new game .if so then why wont you release it now for the players that have ak/bb trouble at the moment

And the answer to your question:

"You should probably send your plea to Nvidia to fix their Vista drivers. We're not going to "patch" to "break" the game, only to unbreak it when Nvidia fixes their end. Sorry."

This is the offical Battlefront stand and I think it sucks big time.

So loyal CMx1 players, we are on our own here.

CMC??? It will be useless when and if it ever goes on sale. Why? read this thread!

  10. Der Alte Fritz,

I followed your settings then ran BB and then AK. The result???

Well let's just say you put a big smile on my face! :)

Amazing, no more spinning background and though it's still slightly jerky moving around the map, I don't care as I can again play my beloved war games! :)

Thanks mate, I owe you one.

  11. Allright, so since I don't run Vista myself, please somebody in one plain post say where exactly CMx1 fails.

Does it fail to detect the video resolutions at the start, was that the problem?

Here's my problems in plain English :)

    1) the background and map edges spin around when I move around the map. This happens with AK and BB.

    2) when I come to save a PBEM turn, the background and buttons are in black. This can be over come by simply changing the turn number and hitting the enter key on the key board.

    3) when the replay ends, I get a sound loop. Again, not a big problem.

    4) when moving around the map, the screen is jerky and slow. reminds me of playing a huge scenario on an old computer.

It's number one above which is causing the biggest problem. I have tried changing settings in the Nvidia control panel but so far nothing helps :(

Only thing I could try is going back to the old driver but I haven't a clue how to roll back to the old one. I know you can do that in the control panel (I think) but where? :(

And thank you for asking how the problems show up in CMx1.

PS, my graphics card is a Geforce 8400 GS.

  12. Well, the problem with doing this from the user community is that those who are articulate enough and have enough technical background to provide a useful bug report than can be acted upup - don't run Vista :)

That same sheep mentality to take Vista just because it's the default install also prevents that group of people from digging into technical detail.

Not to mention it helps having the source code to the game and tell NVidia which API call(s) specifically fail(s).

Sheep mentality??? I have no idea where you live but here all the computer shops sell new computers with Vista (unless you go the Mac route). You CANNOT buy XP here so we are stuck with Vista. So please stop talking down to us with less computer savvy than you.

  13. You should probably send your plea to Nvidia to fix their Vista drivers. We're not going to "patch" to "break" the game, only to unbreak it when Nvidia fixes their end. Sorry.

In future Battlefront should attach a sticker to the front of any CMx1 games they sell. It should read, ' if this game fails to run on your computer, it's not our fault but Nvidia. Should you insist on trying to run your brand new game, then we suggest you remove your new graphics card and replace it with a older model'

Other option is, stop selling the CMx1 games!!

  14. I hope this does not fall on deaf ears after reading you have abandoned the CMx1 series.

Please could you bring out a patch so we can continue playing AK and BB on computers running Vista. Yes I know it's not Vista but the new graphic drivers which are causing the problems.

You continue to sell the CMx1 games so I think bringing out a small patch to address this problem would be the least you could do. New customers trying to install AK or BB onto their computers with Vista are not going to be very pleased when they can't play their newly bought game!

I very much doubt any one from the BF staff reads the CMx1 message boards but no harm in trying :)

  15. Hans brings up better the point that I was trying to make. CMx1 scenario designers and supporters paintstakingly re-did all the uploading when the Scenario Depot crashed and when TSDII was launched. They've since added meg's of discussions, tips and playtesting information about many of those scenarios. If yet another new scenario depot is launched here, I don't see the enthusiasm of CMx1 scenario designers to go through all that again (can't blame them) and knowing that BFC has moved past CMx1 games for the most part, I see it as finally closing the chapter on those games. IMHO of course.

I agree with Hans and GJK and I suspect many others do as well.

  16. Actually I hear that they plan on re-introducing all the old bugs in the engine, just so it can be like old times.

All I was trying to point out was that when CMSF was first released, it got hammered by player comments. If you don't believe me, just do a search on the internet.

I just don't want to see it happen again. Like many others here I have my credit card ready to buy the next WW2 game and I look forward to designing scenarios with the new game and even been thinking about converting the ones I've made for CMx1 such as Storm 555.

With so many excited players here, someone has to step forward and mention it.

  17. And with the CMSF modules selling nicely and no outsiders *Cough* Paradox *Cough* presuring them for an early release I'm sure well get a finished product this time.

Since when has BF been put under pressure from Paradox? I can't see Steve and the team losing sleep over it if they were.

I can't find any other war games which are in the same class as BF's.
