  1. Blackcat - have you read the Wikipedia link in full? One typhoon unlucky, two equals a tit. And bear in mind that he ordered ships back to port without allowing for rescue operations. Double tit. His Navy Board also seems unimpressed - twice. One thing I have not looked into is the detail - but ships heading dead into a sea tend to be safer so the rolling makes me wonder if he was requiring his fleet to do something stupid by sailing across the rolling seas. More from his Wikipedia entry As for seamanship skills he went from torpedo boats, a spell on destroyers and then the Saratoga. Wahat with shore appointments and being a naval attache in Berlin it is quite likely he did not have great experience of dire weather. Also that he did not recognise the compromised nature of later destroyers with added top-hamper.
  2. England remain highly consistent. : (
  3. Ah the Nurburgring - the full course. Now thats a track to race around. I am awaiting GT5 for the PS3 where damage affects the cars. I watch some of the movies of people going around, and of course the new car testing there. I think a Radical still holds the record for a production car - admittedly low production numbers but it is street legal etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C3%BCrburgring_lap_times extraordinary acceleration - and it tops out at only 168mph [264kph]
  4. National colours long gone. Private teams mainly. The Peugeot has just taken a bird strike - I am following their feed as it is more entertaininmg - and they are about to take the 2nd Audi again. Race over as Peugeot engine goes pop.

  7. Listening today to the radio I was hearing about the mental maths Olympics in Germany 1. 5 minutes of 8*8 multiplication 2. Calender calculations - one minute. So you get a date say 21/2/1719 etc and you need to give the right day. The winner did 47 in the 60 seconds 3. Quad and quintuple roots of 4 digit numbers The overall winner from the 36 competitors was an eleven year old girl from Gujurat http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/more_or_less/default.stm
  8. I have been intrigued by the idea that there was more contact than thought in ancient times: both links are at the AAS so unless you are a member you cannot go further than the summary
  9. I thought perhaps might get some mentions so ... Anyway I am a bit apprehensive about introducing a new type of ball for the World Cup - and apparently a VERY different ball:

  14. As a man who often has a dozen or so tabs up this is scary. What is tab napping? Tab napping is essentially a new kind of phishing scam. Until now phishing has involved sending hoax emails in an attempt to steal your usernames, passwords and bank details. Often the sender will claim to be from your bank and will ask you to verify your bank details by clicking on a link contained in the email. The link actually directs you to a fake website which looks just like your bank's own website. Once you have typed in your login details they can be accessed by the criminals who set the fake site up. But we’re beginning to wise up to phishing attacks like this, and many of us know we should be very wary of clicking URLs even if they appear to be in a legitimate email. With awareness of phishing on the up, making it more difficult for scammers to succeed, tab napping could be the scam to watch out for next. How does tab napping work? Tab napping is more sophisticated than the phishing scams we’ve seen so far, and it no longer relies on persuading you to click on a dodgy link. Instead it targets internet users who open lots of tabs on their browser at the same time (for example, by pressing CTRL + T). How does it work? By replacing an inactive browser tab with a fake page set up specifically to obtain your personal data - without you even realising it has happened. Believe it or not, fraudsters can actually detect when a tab has been left inactive for a while, and spy on your browser history to find out which websites you regularly visit, and therefore which pages to fake. So, don't assume that after you have opened a new tab and visited a web page, that web page will stay the same even if you don’t return to it for a time while you use other windows and tabs. Malicious code can replace the web page you opened with a fake version which looks virtually identical to the legitimate page you originally visited. How might tab napping work in practice? Imagine you open the login page for your online bank account, but then you open a new tab to visit another website for a few minutes, leaving the first tab unattended. When you return to your bank’s site the login page looks exactly how you left it. What you haven’t realised is that a fake page has taken its place, so when you type in your username and password, you have inadvertently given the fraudster easy access to your account. Donna Werbner gets your two pence on the scams you hate, and finds out how you can protect yourself and stop the scammers from stealing your cash. Even if you have already logged into your bank account before opening another tab, when you return you might find you’re being asked to login again. This may not necessarily rouse any suspicion since you might simply assume your bank has logged you out because you left your account inactive for too long. You probably won’t even think twice before logging in for a second time. But this time round you have accidently inputted your security details into a fraudster’s fake page which have been sent back to their server. Once you have done so, you can then be easily redirected to your bank’s genuine website since you never actually logged out in the first place, giving you the impression that all is well. http://www.lovemoney.com/news/get-the-best-deal/scams/the-new-scam-that-secretly-steals-your-bank-details-4993.aspx
  15. But I do not really folow modern warfare a la CMx2 : ). Generally speaking wars are lost when your rifles do not fire as far as the enemies - terrain being open of course. Three hundred metres plus is not that far to my mind but unacquainted as I am with the Afghan weaponry .... Suffice to say the recipients of the new rifle appear to be gagging for it which suggests that they feel there is a shortcoming in the armoury.
  16. Really good site here: http://ww2db.com/ship_spec.php?ship_id=367 I was just browing the photos and found this scary: Hull arrived at Pearl Harbor on 23 Oct, joined the fast carrier striking force in the Philippine Sea in Nov 1944. On 17 and 18 Dec 1944, she was engulfed by Typhoon Cobra, experiencing extremely heavy rolls. At about 1100 on 18 Dec, the ship listed to an 80-degree angle, allowing water to flow in at a dangerous rate. The ship soon rolled over completely and sank. Destroyer escort Tabberer and other ships saved 62 men from Hull over the course of the next few days. One does wonder why they were not going bow on to the waves. Possibly the big ships had to get somewhere and the course did not allow for little ships [1325ton]. But Wikipedia gives the details: http://en.wikipedia.org/w...Typhoon_Cobra_%281944%29 3rd Fleet damages * USS Hull (DD-350) - with 70 percent fuel aboard, capsized and sunk with 202 men drowned (62 survivors)[3] * USS Monaghan (DD-354) - capsized and sunk with 256 men drowned (6 survivors)[3] * USS Spence (DD-512) - rudder jammed hard to starboard, capsized and sunk with 317 men drowned (23 survivors) after hoses parted attempting to refuel from New Jersey[3] * USS Cowpens (CVL-25) - hanger door torn open and RADAR, 20mm gun sponson, whaleboat, jeeps, tractors, kerry crane, and 8 aircraft lost overboard[3] * USS Monterey (CVL-26) - hangar deck fire killed 3 men and caused evacuation of boiler rooms requiring repairs at Bremerton Navy yard[3] * USS Langley (CVL-27) - damaged[3] * USS Cabot (CVL-28) - damaged[4] * USS San Jacinto (CVL-30) - hangar deck planes broke loose and destroyed air intakes, vent ducts and sprinkling system causing widespread flooding.[3] Damage repaired by USS Hector (AR-7)[5] * USS Altamaha (CVE-18) - hanger deck crane and aircraft broke loose and broke fire mains[3] * USS Anzio (CVE-57) - required major repair[3] * USS Nehenta Bay (CVE-74) - damaged[4] * USS Cape Esperance (CVE-88) - flight deck fire required major repair[3] * USS Kwajalein (CVE-98) - lost steering control[3] * USS Baltimore (CA-68) - required major repair[3] * USS Miami (CL-89) - required major repair[3] * USS Dewey (DD-349) - lost steering control, RADAR, the forward stack, and all power when salt water shorted main electrical switchboard[3] * USS Aylwin (DD-355) - required major repair[3] * USS Buchanan (DD-484) - required major repair[3] * USS Dyson (DD-572) - required major repair[3] * USS Hickox (DD-673) - required major repair[3] * USS Maddox (DD-731) - damaged[4] * USS Benham (DD-796) - required major repair[3] * USS Donaldson (DE-44) - required major repair[3] * USS Melvin R. Nawman (DE-416) - required major repair[3] * USS Tabberer (DE-418) - lost foremast[6] * USS Waterman (DE-740) - damaged[4] * USS Nantahala (AO-60) - damaged[4] * USS Jicarilla (ATF-104) - damaged[4] On board the Cowpens ""We were rolling to such an extent that on each roll to starboard the flight deck edge would hit green water on the starboard side," continued Admiral DeBaun. "The rolls to port were almost as bad but always about five degrees less due to our built-in starboard list. On the big rolls one could reach down from the starboard wing of the bridge and touch green water as we rolled to starboard." http://www.usshancockcv19...istory/typhoon_cobra.htm
  17. You might not want this recipe if you see the url first: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/carrotsglazedwithcum_80467? BBC intentional humour SOKRATIS PAPASTATHOPOULOS While Greece may lack the star quality of many other sides, they can at least boast one of the 'biggest' names at the World Cup. 18. From the Daily Telegraph. I cannot help feeling surprise and dismay that in a land with long sightlines this starte of affairs existed at all. "Royal Marines in Afghanistan have begun using a new long-range rifle in their fight against the Taliban.Members of 40 Commando have deployed the Sharpshooter on the front line in Helmand province for about a fortnight now, the Ministry of Defence said. The semi-automatic weapon - the first new infantry combat rifle in more than 20 years - is more accurate over long distances with higher calibre rounds.More than 400 were bought in January as a £1.5m urgent operational requirement. The Sharpshooter will be used alongside the Army's standard issue SA80 A2 assault rifle, and each weapon shared amongst three or four soldiers. Sgt Baz Evans of 40 Commando said: "I have fired over 1,000 rounds on the rifle in training; accurately hitting targets over 800m (2,625ft) away. "The new Sharpshooter rifle provides quick and accurate fire, with the flexibility of using it in the assault rifle role as well. It's hoofing." Members of 40 Commando have begun using the Sharpshooter rifle in battles with the Taliban in dangerous Sangin in Helmand province. The new semi-automatic weapon fires a 7.62mm round, larger than the SA80's 5.56mm bullet. Col Peter Warden, from Defence, Equipment and Support, said: "It is a versatile weapon which will give our units a new dimension to their armoury." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McBcgob9DcA
  19. At last year’s White House correspondents’ dinner, a few days before Mother’s Day Obama said: “This is a tough holiday for Rahm Emanuel because he’s not used to saying the word ‘day’ after ‘mother.’” Rahm being his Chief of Staff. http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/2010/06/05/is-it-time-for-obama-to-dump-rahm-emanuel/

  21. The wikipedia article is very interesting on the many attempts of net censorship indulged in by the Aussie government: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_Australia Going outside of ISP's by using a third party seems acceptable where politicians are engaged in suppression.
