  1. There's a certain wisdom in running on both sides of a wall where the danger lies in the possibility of a mortar round dropping in their vicinity but I do agree that it highlights a problem in situational awareness when some choose to hop the wall into direct LOF targeting. The answer in those situations does lie in the opening line of the post above. Plot with a little more caution to keep the wall twixt thee and the danger. Here endeth the lesson.

  2. Wow, Courage and Fortitude as your first campaign is kind of like having Kate Upton as your first date ever when you're 15 years old. You are just not ready, young padawan.

Well I'll be. Just had the AI surrender with two minutes left on the clock. From wading ankle deep through blood at the bridge crossing and getting hung up on the wire just up the road it has turned out as a total victory. Really not certain how that happened but nonetheless it has. The only concern is whether the price has been too high in campaign terms.

    Smashing!

  3. A long time friend and associate recently brought to my attention the following petition, a link to which is given below.

    https://www.change.org/p/rt-hon-george-osborne-mp-urgently-reverse-current-and-future-cuts-to-the-uk-imperial-war-museum-s-annual-operating-grant-in-aid-so-that-it-can-maintain-services-and-preserve-its-standing-as-an-international-centre-for-study-research-and-education

I suspect many others will be unaware of these proposals as indeed was I. In this the centenary year of the outbreak of The Great War it seems incredibly ill timed, insensitive and, if I am permitted to express a personal view, short-sighted should this course of action proceed. It just seems such a waste of a national resource (I would go further and say an internationally recognised one at that) for the sake of a handful of millions where the amounts are counted elsewhere in the billion.

I have no vested interest in this matter beyond my opposition to the proposal. I point out for the sake of balance that the originator of the petition has clearly mentioned his trade union affiliation and is obviously acting in defence of the threatened jobs along with a desire to preserve the services currently available.

I would close by saying that I have sought permission from the moderator before bringing this to the attention of any interested individuals who may wish to join in registering their thoughts or opposition to the proposed action.

  4. Thanks for posting the link. Very much appreciated watching the action unfold and also hearing the snippet of music at the end of the clip. Have been considering that very tune for use for the end of battle piece for a while. I think it'll work very nicely and have the right feel and atmosphere. Cheers!

  5. I'm not sure what you're getting at, here. Target Arc doesn't affect which way your infantry look, just what they'll shoot at. They always maintain 360degree awareness. So you can stop them firing beyond their effective range (say) by setting a 360 arc to whatever you think their effective range is. Or 1m (effectively zero). If you want them to orient themselves using the terrain, relative to a specific direction, that's not the direction they arrive at that waypoint facing, a near-180 TA in the appropriate direction with the appropriate range will effectively add a "Face" command. Once they're settled, you can go back to a circular arc if you want.

If you want them to look in a given direction, why would you put an arc "off to one side"?

If you give them a 1m arc, anything "stumbling through" it is going to have spotted them anyway.

So give them short (self-defense range - the range at which you can be pretty certain they'll get spotted by an infantry unit anyway, say) TA. What is it about that short arc that you think doesn't do exactly what you're asking for?

  6. I would like to see a rule/control that determines at what range the units start to engage targets.

It would be graded from max effective range of the weapon to zero. That way units will not be wasting ammo popping off rounds at too long a range or when range is set low the unit will quietly sit and observe until something is danger close. This helps with ambush situations of troops or tanks also!

    My two cents,

Isn't that what the covered arc command is for?

  7. I find myself in some very exalted company here having followed a very similar route to many. It was via the September 2000 edition of PC Strategy Games, which as a matter of interest I retained for posterity, where I read their review of CMBO and loaded the demo from the attached disc.

In a like fashion to Juju's post (and how often in a lifetime will I be able to say that?) I deleted it PDQ, but upon installing the demo for a second time was well and truly hooked. The rest as many say is history. Funny thing is, if I don't like a demo game I never reload them. Why would I? CMBO was an absolute exception to the rule and I am so glad it panned out that way.

    Best £4.99 I ever spent.

  8. Woohoo. I must be learning. I understood all four terms.

    What do I win?

And, for the bonus question, I understood (I think) the original query.

I think there are a couple of topics being raised.

Are HT gunners encompassed by the latest changes to AFV spotting? If so is it appropriate?

And secondly if the passengers in a HT spot a target that the gunner hasn't, should they be able to kick him in the ribs, shout and point and aid him spotting better. In other words is in-vehicle comms between crew and separate passenger elements working properly?

    Right Womble?

  9. IMO, CMMODS (Yes, I sent cash) best contribution was that of gridded terrain. What a brilliant idea, and so very obvious after someone else had thought of it.

    Who was that?

Don't know for sure, but in the style of the Oxford English Dictionary, here's the earliest reference I know of.

Hats off to Aszurom in 2000. Do like the funky hex grid!

Anyone able to improve on that?

  10. A lovely looking mod in the making although I'm inclinded to agree with JDS on the chassis/ exhaust issue. My preliminary check (and it is very superficial) indicates Pz IV ausf H chassis used initially for the early L/48 production and would have had the shown exhaust and 4 return rollers as opposed to the ausf J chassis with altered exhaust and 3 return rollers. As you say though, given the polygons you're working to I'm sure it'll be a beautiful beast and a popular mod when finished.

I actually hope a grog on a white horse gallops in to support this combination though.
