  1. I could recommend one book for the upcoming CM2. I'm not sure if it has been translated in english, at least I haven't found it in english. But for those who speak german the book is called Die verratene armee by Heinrich Gerlach. It's a true story (but written like a novel) about the siege of Stalingrad written by a German soldier who lived through the whole thing and was captured by Russians in 1943. At least German Amazon.com sells it. My copy is in Finnish printed in 1965...

  2. Thanks for the replies. I tried to play PBEM once but my opponent just disappeared after five or so turns so that was it and now I have played only against the AI.

I don't know if I can predict what the AI is going to do next. It still can give me a few surprises now and then. And I don't think I have any special tactics that I use in every game. Well, maybe that that I'm quite careful. I HATE to lose any of my men or vehicles, so I try to save them as long as possible. It hurts me to see them run in panic tongue.gif Also, I don't have very much knowledge about real tactics used in WW2 or today or strenghts and weaknesses of the equipment. Someone could even say that I'm using them 'in a wrong way' smile.gif

And yes, I play scenarios only once. What's the point of winning them again, anyway biggrin.gif

So in next scenario I'll try to give the Axis some handicap.

BTW, is it better to stick to scenario defaults or let the AI freely place its units?

  3. Hi,

I have now played something like 10 or so scenarios against the AI and so far every one of them except one has been a total victory for me. (The one was a tie...) The last scenario maybe the best example. I was playing the 30 turn scenario Move-it! or Lose-it! as Americans. By the turn 10 I had practically halted the German advance and on the turn 20 they surrendered. They had all their vehicles kaputt and only six men unhurt.

So, should I give the Axis (I always play as Allied) some handicap or what? I had absolutely no prior experience in wargaming before I bough CMBO, so it is a surprise for me that I fair this well. Or maybe I was born to be a general biggrin.gif

  4. Thanks again Schrullenhaft,

I'm using BIOS v1.003 because it's said to be the most stable version. But maybe I try the 1.005 version and see what happens. And the other fixes also.

About FSAA, I'm using 1x2 setting now and haven't tried any other setting. The only other game I'm playing currently is the B17-II and amazingly I haven't had any problems with that (or any other software), unlike many others have...

I contacted the BTS support directly and Madmatt sent me a long list of possible fixes in about an hour, even though it must have been about 1 or 2 AM there. That's what I call support!

    Thanks again for your help!

  5. Hi,

I recently upgraded my computer and now CM is unplayable. It freezes already during the first turn when I'm giving orders. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work and I just have to switch the computer off. I never had this problem with my old system.

The specs for the new computer are:

    TBird 1GHz

    Asus A7V mobo

    256 MB PC-133

    Elsa GeForce2 MX 32MB

    IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30 GB

    Soundblaster Live! Value

    DirectX 8.0

Latest NVidia drivers from their website

Latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers and BIOS v.1003 for the mobo

    CM v1.1

    Windows 98SE

    Desktop resolution 32 bit

All except vital programs are closed during the game.

    Any help is appreciated.
