If you're the one giving the Canister-equipped unit orders, I've found in the past that they have a tendency to let rip with the CAN at the first enemy infantry contact they see, so it may be a good idea to consider keeping them busy with Target Light orders so they don't waste the scarce shotgun shells.

So the cannister rounds are fired only by the computer?

And targeting light orders makes sure they only fire the MG?

  2. I have a few questions about arty that I couldn't find in any of the old threads.

    1. Is the targeting by a HQ unit affected if they are hiding?

    2. Can they hide at any point without negatively affecting spotting rounds, and does this differ from emergency missions?

    3. What exactly is the difference between the number of assets and the duration of the mission and how should they be used in conjunction with each other in different situations?

  3. It's a bit annoying that the Alt-I function only allows you to remove either all icons or friendly icons. Where is the ability to remove enemy icons only?

I also wish that one of the skill levels had this feature of turning off enemy icons without turning off your own. The Elite level in particular seems like a good place to add this feature since it would require you to actually identify the unit and have eyes on it. Otherwise, it should disappear. This would be especially useful for playing human opponents who like to use strict house rules since you wouldn't have to blindly trust your opponent to turn off enemy icons.

Wait, have you been on tournamenthouse.com?

Now that I think about it, I WAS on a site called Tournament House about 10 years ago when that Close Combat 2 game was all the rage. Is that what you're referring to?

  5. After a 2 year break, I'm coming back to this game and looking for an opponent. Back in the day, I used to be an intermediate skilled player. However, right now I'm very rusty.

The only thing I usually insist on is seeing the map first before playing (not the setups though) as I want to make sure I don't hate it before I spend weeks/months playing a game on that board. Ideally, I'd like to go find a fair scenario for both players and have my opponent sign off on it.

I should be good for a few turns a week.

  6. I recently finished up Abbay D' Authie, a scenario which is billed as being H2H.

To me, the Allies clearly have an advantage here as they get a location bonus from the start by being so close to one of the VLs, making it resemble more of an Axis probe. However...what the Germs lack in location to VLs is made up somewhat by the terrain advantage they get by starting at a higher altitude and having a nearly complete view of the Allied side of the board.

A smart player will know how to take advantage of this benefit with the forces given to him making it easier to grab control of the needed VL on the other side of the map.

Or...you can simply fight for the remaining VL in the middle and hope to inflict more casualties than your opponent. The caveat here is that the Allies have better ways to defend the location vs the Germs and a stalemate is almost sure to be the result unless the Germs at some point decide to go on the offensive.

I do recommend the scenario though. Just make sure to have the weaker player as the Allies and I think things will balance themselves out.

  7. The Opponent Finder forum is a ghost town so I'm posting this here.

I'm a long time player of CM but I don't play that regularly. Looking for an opponent of intermediate skill level for PBEM play in a MG scenario.

I prefer small to medium sized battles that are a good mix of infantry and tanks which also allow some cover. It would also be nice to find an opponent that offers some small conversation over email instead of just sending back the file.

    PM me if interested.

Just to say, the maps in MG aren't totally "Bocage" free. And in some cases they are used just as badly, i.e so close to a house that the people inside would never get any daylight through their windows. That said, it is still worth buying. Challenging campaigns, and plenty of great stand-alone battles.

Has anyone else noticed if the user-made scenarios for MG like those found on The Few Good Men have less bocage than those from the base game or Commonwealth?

It's almost like a conspiracy between designers to use maps as flat as Texas while overloading each scenario with bocage. I'd really like to find some good H2H ones for MG that are more hilly without the bocage overload.

  9. MG would make a good Christmas present for me as I never bothered buying it (still haven't gotten bored of Base Game + Commonwealth). However, I was wondering what the main additions are with the game over the other two I mentioned.

One of the things I was hoping for was scenarios which don't have bocage. I've found it really hard to find player-made scenarios on the fan sites which don't use this stuff for Normandy.

Other than that, I'd like to hear if there were any major additions to this add-on that I might've missed.

  10. I'm watching this now for the first time and I'm already put off by one of the scenes. They've just finished killing off the AT guns by the tree line and then want to execute the German soldier...oh wait...I meant Nazi...cause every German is an evil Nazi in these films. So not only do we have this ridiculousness, but I'm supposed to identify with American soldiers who want to illegally kill this unarmed prisoner. WTF?

It's sick how the men who run the Hollywood studios try to get the public to believe these lies against the German people. Do you think that if this movie took place in the Pacific, they'd have our heroes executing a Japanese POW?  Doubtful.

When I started with the game I was playing realtime.  But I noticed that I would miss so much of the action, even in relatively small battles.  So I started using WeGo and started enjoying the game much more.  And had more success, since I could replay the action and see what happened to each unit that was under fire.  There's nothing better than replaying a tank shootout from both sides, watching the rounds fly past.  Now I would only use realtime in very small battles, if then.

I agree completely because you get to see every little detail during the action phase. If you're fighting the enemy in 2 different areas on the map, think about all that you miss playing real time. In fact, I've never played a real-time game (although I should probably try it at least once.)

Then again, I look at this game as a version of chess. I'm fine with whatever happens after my move because I don't treat the game like it's a 100% simulation.

  12. I'm surprised that someone hasn't created a Wiki or something which goes into explanation of all the units and equipment of this game. For me personally, I'm interested in finding out the armor thickness of AFVs and gun penetration data in Combat Mission since we now no longer have this info on the dashboard.

Is there a mod or anything available to use that gives this info?

It gives you more flexibility. Some batteries have as few as 2 guns while some others have as many as 8! You wouldn't want a slow area denial barrage to use all of those!

So what is the difference then between firing say...4 guns with a medium ROF vs 2 guns with heavy ROF?
