We all know the benefits of reverse slope. However, is it modeled with respect to artillery fire?
If I have units on the reverse slope of a hill opposite the enemy's friendly board edge , will the rounds be more likely to fall short or over shoot? Likewise, even being on top of a crest, we all know artillery is more likely to less damage due to rounds falling short or long (thereby, landing at the base of the hill/mountain doing less damage).
It doesn't seem to model this. Am I right?
Thanks in advance.

For the record... that movie sucked. I was falling asleep.
The best part was about the first 20 minutes. The train ride to Stalingrad and the river crossing were the coolest part.
After that, it was not believable with NKVD shooting their own regular army troops on a massive scale (since we all know that it was the "political prisoner" units that suffered that fate).
Almost wanted to walk out, but, I was hoping for more.
That's my 0.02 rubles.

Actually, a new game IS coming out this year. It's that age old classic made into a computer version..
World In Flames.
Talk about grand strategy!

Jason,
Your numbers don't account for the weapons stores found under Soviet control at the end of WWII.
As we know today, the Soviets were very protective of ANY information, and if they did give any, it was always, "adjusted."
For what it is worth.

Actually, it's better to have CM model prepared defenses by allowing the defender to have foxholes available as part of set up.
That way, the defender can make successive defensive lines.
And yes, I know about making half squads and running forward. But that just doesn't cut it when the scenario is a small map, or you want more than one defensive line.
Allow foxholes to be PLACED on the map.

Hey, I thought Enemy at the Gates was based on War of the Rats?
What gives?
In any event, Bevor's book, Stalingrad, is excellent. It also does an excellent job of dispelling many of the myths and revisionist histories still being perpetuated about the German army and generalship, through actual official Soviet and German documentation. The comments on Manstein were extremely enlightening.

Yep. It bothers the hell out of me. And a SNEAK command is NOT the answer, because as already mentioned, you continue to sneak by the enemy once you found him.
There should be some sort of move until fired at command, IMO.

This is very frustrating. This is a GREAT discussion, however, it is quite clear that after some serious research, the T-34 is an under-rated AFV, and is being subjected to various prejudices.
I suggest if one really wants to be unbiased, read from the horses mouth, i.e., actual combat reports, and first person accounts, from Red Army soldiers. Go to:
http://history.vif2.ru/atwar/index.html
and learn what Soviet soldiers thought about their AFVs, what they thought about German tactics, German AFVs (they thought the "King Tiger" was crap), etc.
We certainly have enough accounts from German and western writers that are unfamilair with Soviet weapons platforms. Isn't it about time we look at our other ally's reports?
A detailed, succinct view will encompass all assets and deficiencies of both vehicles.

Do you know of any other accounts from the Soviet side? There are TONS of German views already available, and to be honest, I'm really more interested in finally hearing the view point from the other Allied power that played such an important role in defeating Germany. With the opening of old Soviet archives, I suspect more are on the way.

Himdog posted a great link on some of the Soviet views of the war... it has some great first person accounts and pictures, unfortunately, the topic is getting off topic about some other German account.
The link is:
http://history.vif2.ru/atwar/index.html
I just finished a story about how a Soviet described the difference between the Katayshu and Nebelwerfer, and how much better the Katayusha was.
This is one of the most intriging sites I've seen in a long time. Thanks Himdog!

Why are we concentrating on collisions with enemy tanks?
It's the running into my OWN vehicles… the stopping, backing up, etc.
Doesn't this BOTHER anyone?????
I hate it when I have a bunch of different vehicles proceeding down a road or through a narrow pass, between buildings, over a bridge, and, due to their different speeds, starting playing bumper cars.

AWESOME link. I've been looking for something that good for a LONG time. So much German stuff available, I was getting frustrated.
Hearing the side of the Soviet's was great!
Thanks for the awesome link.

Steve,
That is a VERY perceptive analysis. And I have those same questions! It's not with just CM however, it's with some other games as well.
But, consider 3:1 as the attacker/defender ratio that will give an attacker a "win." This is not a ratio that will give a "draw" which is what you seem to be hoping for.
A "stalemate" or "even" battle against a prepared defense would be around 2:1 (ref. How to Make War by James Dunnigan, 2nd Edition).
So, my question is the same as yours, but I'd insert 2:1 instead of 3:1.
At 2:1, it seems the attacker still has an overwhelming advantage!

Rockets are certainly NOT as accurate as regular artillery. And, I can't find any instance where rocket artillery was "corrected" by a FO. Once it was called down, it was a massive barrage.
The reason the number of "ammo" points is low is that there were not that many rounds per volley and mission. It's not that they were more accurate. They had a larger explosive blast radius.

Not sure on the Nebelwerfer.
I concur too that we use arty way too "unrealistic" in CM.

I see your point, but it may be the only arty I have as dictated by the scenrio designer (I don't do QBs). That's why I'd like to see them modelled correctly.
If not in CM, absolutely in CM2 especially with Soviet abundance in Katyusha. Just some thoughts.

Hmm, this fire was coming in almost perpendicular from the bridge. that's why I think those guys are dolts!

I am playing a PBEM game. My opponent is running troops across the bridge. Due to my fire (MG and tank), they keep running back and forth. They never "rout" or "panic" off the bridge.
Why is that?

Yep ... that's what I kind of thought. It just didn't make sense that you could correct rocket artillery, as modelled incorrectly in CM.

AFAIK, it does. My understanding of WWII rocket artillery is pull the ignitor, and whoosh, there they all go in 2.137 seconds. Every round on the delievery platform is gone. It's quite a site.
That is why I don't understand this. Do you (or anyone) have different specs on the rocket artillery platforms?
Thanks in advance!

Is Reverse Slope Modeled wrt Artillery Fire?

That's what I was afraid of.
Do you think there are plans to modify the artillery model, so that it is a truer representation of "real life?"
