  1. Comrades, The top of a hill -- unless there is some overpowering tactical reason to be there, or some really great cover, is a bad place for any unit, infanry, armor or vehicle to park. Tankers are taught to avoid hill tops like the plague. For one thing it means that anyone on the map can probably see you, and secondly (and less significantly for game purposes) it silhouettes you against the sky, which means anyone at a lower elevation has a BETTER shot at you. Reverse slopes can be interesting places to hide and ambush the bad guys for a close range knife fight, peeking over the hill can be very rewarding if you do it right. forested hills can be good places to hide... But sitting up there in the open is an invite to get splattered.
  2. same question as original poster: except I have an even slower, more evil Compaq computer: PII 233mHz, 32 megs of Ram, with a VooDoo 3 3000 card. Im going to upgrade next year, when I can get a 1 gHz processor for a smaller amount of money than for now, but until then, what mods can I run without taking a performance hit? Also, should I stay away from medium to large battles? *they make my head hurt, anyway...
  3. Personal type question: Im running a PII 233 with a VooDoo 3 3000 PCI card and 32 megs of ram. How big a scenario can I run without the game performance taking a hit? (ps. I bought the Voo Doo 3 so I could play CM. My dinky processor cant power a 32 megabyte card.) FWIW, I tend to think that the "ideal" CM player is one who is not turned off by the graphics. No one who has seen Unreal would consider the graphics high end, but a more serious gamer wonders about the AI and the realism, along with issues such as what real world conditions are modeled in the game. One of those real world conditions that exists for game designers is tradeoffs. such as the tradeoffs that happen between design and programming I also remember the armor penetration diagram and think that Id rather have that in the game than better eye candy. As the manual says -- you could run this game with a a blank screen and get the same results.
  4. I don't know about the rest of it, but it _may_ be that you are being righly punished for bad tactics. Armor should NEVER crest hills. Any tanker will tell you that the top of a hill is a rotten place for a tank. And it is sweet and befitting that any tanker who does so get beat like a rented mule. As for the rest of it, I have no idea, but if you will permit me a general observation, I will say that even if one has great tools, one will not reap benefits if one uses them poorly. I hope I have given no offense. Terence
  5. well, yeah, OS arena has been ... problematic. But I can't say that Ive ever had much trouble at all with Microsoft GAMES. Compared with, say, the first release of M1 Tank Platoon 2 (which was a total nightmare...), they've all been pretty darn good. and I think the x box will run unix.... 6. Any thoughts about doing a CM for _future_ gaming consoles? Before you guys laugh and point fingers, -- im NOT asking about some crummy version of CM ported to the Nintendo 64. Im talking about far more sophisticated stuff -- If you haven't, you might want to read up on Microsoft's X-Box, coming out next year. Its got a hard drive and a fairly amazing processor. Not only that, Msft seems to be going out of its way to be developer friendly. One reason im asking is cause I'm not a Quake/Unreal/Doom player. I like more serious, complicated games exactly like CM. Which i cannot get on any console... Do you guys think there's a market for more sophisticated stuff like CM on the console? Would you buy one if you could play CM on it? considering the thing will also play dvds and at 300-400 bucks probably cheaper than buying a faster computer and/or a 3d card.
  7. If you have more than one tank, you can use overwatch or bounding overwatch tactics to cover areas where the main gun is not pointing. This is good armor tactics and should be done anyway, (if possible) regardless of the AI's behavior. And at the risk of being berated, I feel compelled to say that while not being able to point the turret _may_ be a flaw, I can't see how it could be considered a major one.
  8. my 2 cents: I like a shorter game 20-30 turns, unless there is a compelling reason for a longer time frame. Eg. Hold a good defensive position with a small force until reinforcements arrive, then counterattack and take these three objectives. While im doing this, who knows what the other side is up to... wheels within wheels. Im sure you catch my drift... Terence
  9. Comrades, Brooklyn is in the house. I'd love to meet up and talk about the game, and learn a thing or two. Ill take the A at Jay street. Ive been following the forums very closely, and just played my first game last week. It took me a while to get my Voodoo 3 3d card (bought for CM) to work. Anyhow, Im an avid wargamer, and I love CM. Please count me in. Terence tnelan@greyinteractive.com
  10. Hello Everyone, I'd like to introduce myself by saying Im the biggest idiot to walk the earth. I was so excited to buy the game that I blazed through the hardware/software requirements without reading them very carefully. I have no video card. I understand by reading the site more attentively that said card is highly reccommended. I have a Compaq Pentium 2, 233mhz with 32 megs of ram and a 24x CD ROM. I am running DirectX 7. I can't recall the sound card at the moment. SO, I have decided to buy a card, (instead of trying to muddle through without it) and since my wife is thousands of miles away until the 28th of August-- I don't expect to hear much argument. My question to you is this: which card should I buy? Which one works the best with CMBO? Any advice will be gratefully accepted. Thanks you very much, ------------------ Terence
