Ordering new pc. Any ideas on WinXP for gaming?It looks slick, but I've read it is relatively slower than Win98. Also, how will older games fare? (I would hate to lose touch with CCII, etc.) Thanks.

I started all this because I was rummaging around Chips/Bits and saw mention of Axis and Allies 2 to be available 12/01. I recall the many complaints re: the "A&A" of 2 years ago. Can always hope for a better version.

Can anyone confirm a rumor that the boardgame "Axis and Allies" will be available as a PC game late this year/early next year??

Where can I find a full collection of Magua's mods, including his building mods ? Also, any recommends for "must-have" sound mods ?

Schrullenhaft, thanks for hanging in with this. No, I have only the one copy of CM installed and have omitted the shortcut. My video card is Nvidia riva tnt 16mb with the original drivers. (I should update: are some driver sources better than others?) Despite 3 reinstalls, there is no "prefs" file in the C/Programs/CMBO folder. Bmp., PEM, WAV, Scenarios, etc.-- but no prefs. On every reinstall I am given a choice of just 2 screen res. No sky is the only graphics problem I've found. Damn...this may force me to become more computer literate-- and I do hear laughter out there! Thanks.

Preferences file? I would like to find it. I have no such file in my CMBO folder. How do i find it? (Please, nobody laugh out there.)

I can't get sky textures. The files (#1400 -1442) are in my Bmp. file but no matter what time of day or weather-- just a flat gray- white sky (except night is flat dark gray). No clouds,sunset,stars,nada. Rain and snow come down fine. I've reinstalled, tried the demo (gold)-- same gray sky. I recently downloaded and overwrote jager's sky texture mods (from THQ) into Bmp., still no sky. Game runs and graphics well in every other respect. How could a system glitch be so specific/discreet. Ideas?

Madmatt, patron saint of CM players-- and many sincere thanks for what you do, Help! Despite a fresh reinstall of CM, I cannot find any pref. folder in the CMBO folder. Where do I look and how do I get there? And, why can't I get any sky textures-- even when I've downloaded and overwritten into Bmp.file jager's recent, awesome sky textures. All I have is an omnipresent gray sky. Weather yes, sky no. My fresh & total reinstall still won't produce even the stock, Battlefront sky. No blue. Nada.

I noticed some time ago my sky disappeared. I've been playing with a gray-white sky during day and a flat dark shade of gray at night. No matter what the weather or time of day, just gray/white. Rain & snow fall but the sky texture is blank. I've carefully replaced with jager's cool sky textures-- but to no effect. Screen res is 800x600. Everything else runs fine. Seems a little humorous but also damned boring-- HELP Quick!!

The crowd here seems sensible/knowledgable. I'm upgrading from my PII350, 128RAM, 16MB video card w/8gigs & Soundblaster Live. I play CM1 (CM2 eventually) , my son is impatiently awaiting "Med of Honor Allied Assault", "Hidden,Dangerous 2", etc. What should I move up to in order to stay current and game-worthy for a few years? [Please have a little regard for the family savings.]

Given the mechanics of gameplay in CM, does it matter with regard to being "spotted" by the enemy whether my my squad runs, crawls or "moves" across an open area. Everything being equal, does each style of movement have a different likelihood of being spotted in an open area?

I'm midway in "Ham and Jam". Have great respect for Maj. Howard and his men. Want to read more. Is Ambrose's "Pegasus Bridge" my best choice for first read? Other titles? What happened to Maj. Howard? (A lengthy post war life I hope). Also, I growing great admiration for unsupported infantry operations.

Have twice downloaded CMHQ explosions and smoke (version 2) mod. and unzipped into bitmap file and, yes, the files are there--I've checked. However, many burning Shermans later I have yet to see black sooty smoke or explosions/fire different than the CM original issue. What could be wrong-- or do the new explosions happen at random under specific circumstances or what?

I foolishly let my M4Al get too close to a building and a plucky German tossed a grenade, it appeared, under my tank ...didn't just immobilize but knocked it out. My foolhardiness is very credible, but what about tank vs. grenade?

Somewhere above, a true individualist mentioned "Longest Journey" -- an adventure game (!!). Me, too. Nonstop destruction is wearisome. Besides, tranquility only whets the appetite and hones the edge for Battle of Britain,not to mention 82ndAirborneNormandy or borowing my son's PSX-1 for Medal of Honor. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A FIRST PERSON SHOOTER/STRATEGY/PROBLEM SOLVER/ADVENTURE combo based on the realistic life of a WWII G.I. for P.C. Creeping through the jungle on Guadalcanal, etc. No supernatural, magic spells or bull****. The best games are those you design in your own head that nobody but you would buy.

Why do American tank destroyers have open turrets? What advantage does it give. I'm sure the answer is obvious ... but not to me. (Easier bailing-out, easier to get rid of empties-- shell casings, Schlitz,etc. Huh?

In game and/or combat, of what destructive or distracting value is plunging fire (105 or 155) against fairly out in the open on-coming armor ?

I've downloaded some scenarios from CMHQ Depot. However, some I cannot open or, despite moving them into my CMBO Scenario folder, cannot get listed in the game scenario menu. What do ...?

So when will CM open a new theater: No. Africa, Italy, Russia, etc. ?? What changes might we anticipate in game play or appearance ?
