I will try to post what I have read about the origins of the SS. Hope my english is good enough... The Militia of the NSDAP (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - National Socialist German Worker Party) was the SA (Sturmabteilung - stormtruppers). In the 1920's where much streetfigting between the political partys in Germany occured, every (?) pary had such an organisation. The KPD (Kommunistische Partei Deutschland - German Communist Party) had the 'Rotfrontkämpferbund' ( Red Front Fighter Union [?]). Also the Socialdemocrats had their own. The SA was a big organisation which was present in many towns, but most had no deeper ideological indoctrination and so Hitler decided to have a special elite formation of bodyguards which where 100% reliable Nazis which should protect him on his journeys through Germany. This group was first called 'Stoßtrupp Adolf Hitler' and had ca. 200 men. Also this formation was growing and after a while there where in different towns local groups which where used when Hitler was in this area. This local groups became collectivly known as 'Schutzstaffel' ( Schutz = protection, staffel= ? don't know in english - maybe 'squad' etc.) or short 'SS'. After Hitlers not succsecfully uprising in Munich 1923 the SA was declared illegal by the authorities but the SS was overlooked. Hitler was relesed from prison in 1924 but the prohibition of the SA lasted till 1926. In this time the SS where able to strenghten its position in the NSDAP. After 1926 the SS was going in the backgound again. The true history of the SS begins on 16. January 1929 as Hitler made the 28 years old Heinrich Himmler 'Reichsführer SS' (realm leader of SS). At this time the strengh of SS was only 280 men. Hitler ordered Himmler to form from this organisation the elite force of the Nazi party. Only the most fittest and loyal Nazis where allowed to serve in SS. As Hitler became Reichskanzler (relam chancellor) in Januar 1933 there where already 25.000 members. The SA - from which the SS was officaly a sub-organisation - had 300.000 men. At the end of the year the SA had risen to a very big organisation of ca. 2 - 3 million members, who, under the leading of Ernst Röhm demanded a going on of the revolution to realize the socialistic claims which where also made by the NSDAP in the 1920s. Hitler was in fear that he may loose the power over his movement, because he had decided to strenghen his regime with help of the conservativs and the military (Reichswehr). In June 1934 in the infamous 'Nacht der langen Messer' (night of the long knifes) Hitler purged the rangs of the SA leaders from his opponents. This he where only able to do with the SS which was proviting the execusion commandos. After that, the SS where responsible only to Hitler himself and was growing to a complex organisation in the following years. Hitler thought of it as a armed organisation of the NSDAP who was able to destroy any opposition from any direction in germany against the power of the Nazis. The Waffen-SS was formed as the military-branch of the SS who could take part in real warfare combat and was began to organized 1938 or so. In the first time there was much struggle between the Waffen-SS and the Wehrmacht (the true German Army). The High Command of the Wehrmacht realized, that the Nazis intended to build up a regular army which was not under controll by the traditional german military but under the controll of the Nazis for their own. In January 1938 it was found out, that the Reichswehrminister (minister for military) Feldmarschall v. Blomberg hat marriaged a prostitute. So it was demanded, that he had to leave his position. His succsessor Generaloberst v. Fritsch was played out with a intrigue (Himmler's security chief Heydrich had prepared a document which claimed to proof that v. Fritsch was homosexual). As consequenc Hitler deceided that there where no sucsessor for v. Blomberg and he would take command over the Wehrmacht for himself. Hallo! Thanx for your interest. Sorry for those, who can`t read german, but as far I know, these topics are realy 'special' and most of the literature till now is from private resarchers. But for our english (speaking) friends, I recommend the article from the second link in my massage above. He has realy read all the books, that I too found interesting. It sounds all a bit mystical, but he gives a very good overview of the known facts and connections, far better I could write in english. As kids we don't were realy deep in the tunnels, accesible till today - for reasons mentioned above. But as I have read some books in the last two years, I remembered that I still know where some entrances are. And yes, of course, I and my friends have made a little 'private investigation' again ... These entrances are now sealed, but broken up from time to time by kids from the area (I think). But these tunnels (25, some connected) are deffently not the BIG THING. They are approximatly 4m high and 3m wide. The tunnel we where in, some months ago, goes ca. 130m in the earth. They are really NOT finished, but there are still old cables and peaces of rosty metal, which purpose I can't estimate. We have also seen Sprenglöcher (holes in the wall to place explosives)with charges in it still today!!! And bats sleeping on the ceiling of course ... On a party (my friends and I are organizing gothic partys - http://www.culturbund.de ) somebody told me that he has shown the Bundeswehr (german army) the entrances - they don't knowed, where to search. So they had the equipment from the army to go deeper with robes, something you can't do without the right practice. It is REALY dangerous. Anyway. In the books that I have read, it is told that in the archives, the documents which handle the reports of the visit of Patton (? - don't realy know if it was this US genaral) and his stuff in the Jonastal, are not to be found and others who are there, are under security still today... But the author from one book (Haral Fäth '1945 - Thüringens Mannhattan Projekt', CTT-Verlag ISBN 3-9805278-8-3 http://www.geheimwaffen.de/ctt/literat.htm) writes, that the SS had sealed the real interesting areas deep within the mountain and the Amis had no chance to find something. 1. they feared traps and 2. they had give Thuringia to soon to the Russians. What the Russians have done? - Nobody knows. But I think, they have searched also, but maybe not found the real entrance - when it is ascessable still today. To really solve the riddle, you must have big equipment to dig... But till today nothing is really done from the goverment for reasons I don't know... I think there are many aspects of WW2 which aren't told the world correctly or at whole. Of cource there are many conspiracy theories but I think much of it is written whith religious or political thoughts in mind - and I am interested in facts not fantasy. But the first thing one can do is to let other people know, what one had found out - and the internet is a realy cool tool to do this. Hello! Please excuse my bad english. This is my first time posting on this board. I have played the demo and I it seems to bring a lot of fun playing the gold version so I think I will buy the game. But the real point of doing this posting is not so much the game. While reading through this board I realized that this kind of games is played by a lot of 'cracks' who are fully in every possible and impossible Aspekt of the WW2 arera. I for my own are 24 years old and live in Thuringia (former Eastgermany). Near my hometown Arnstadt there is a valley with much forest, which is called Jonastal. Through the second world war in this valley was a 'Aussenstelle' (don't know the english word) of the KZ Buchenwald. There the prisoners were forced to dig tunnels in the hills. As a kid, I remember, we had a lot of fun to crouch in these tunnels, what was not so much appreciated by the adults because it was dangerous because you can be killed by falling boulders or caught by russian soldiers, who where stationed on the Truppenübungsplatz (area where soldiers are trained - dont knwo it in english), which borders on the Jonastal. Theses tunnels where not really a big thing and looked very unfinished. But there where a lot of rumors that these tunnels where not the real thing and deep inside the mountains the nazis had areas with furniture, toiletts ans so on. The main oppinion about the purpose of this complex where, that here in the Jonstal was the place where Adolf Hitler wanted to build his last HQ. But these where all only rumors and in GDR-times you had other things to do as speculating on such things. But with the 'Wende' (1989 and so on) things have changed. At the beginning of the 90's there where much of speculating because of some statements of Boris Jelzin, everybody thought in the Jonastal the Nazis had hidden the famous 'Bernsteinzimmer' (furniture for a whole room made with a lot of amber). There came a lot of people, even from the USA, who wanted to become rich in finding a treasure. But nobody have found anything... Meanwhile I study political sciences, history and philosophy. And whith reading about WW2 I remembered about the Jonastal, right in front of my door. But in the main literature I find anything precise about it. Only in the internet there are some explainings to be found, what the real purpose of 'Objekt Olga - SIII - Jonastal' realy where. But I don't know for shure, what is fact and what fantasy. The theories reach from 'the last Führerhauptquartier' to 'underground factorie for A9/A10' (secret weapon - rocket greater and bigger than V1 and V2 able to reach America with A-Bombs) to Nazi-Ufos. Hey! When I start to read I beginn to wonder on what a strange area I'm born and grown up... To come finally to the point. Is somebody here, who knows something about this stuff?
