  1. The Black Watch and Lucknow band performed in Houston last week and I was lucky enough to see them. It was a great night with a disappointing crowd, but the guys were very impressive and friendly. I encourage anyonw who is interested in Military bands or the music of the U.K. to go check them out.

It embarrasses me that the American culture that most of the rest of the world sees is Madonna, RAP, and "Dallas."

  2. I do not know how many of you are planning to buy B-17 2 this fall, but there was a major development the other day. The TCP/IP Multiplayer was removed after having been advertised, and the story was broken before the companies developing and distributing could release the news themselves.

Many people had invested tons of time and effort to creating virtual bomber and fighter groups, and WHAMMO all down the tubes.

It also looks as if support after the release may be an issue and the developer has changed hands in the interim.

I thought Atomic was bad. Ouch

How can you include "Full Metal Jacket" in this thread? That's one of the best war movies of all time! The boot camp sequence is especially the best.

My father was a Marine between Korea and Vietnam and always gets pissed off whenever "Full Metal Jacket" is mentioned. He hates the movie. He said the boot camp sequence is about 80% crap. At best it is an outsiders impression of the Corps. At worst ... well you can guess. Just look at "A ClockWork Orange" to see Kubrick go over the edge trying to make a point.

Does anyone remember an old Mel Gibson movie set in the Pacific? They have to rescue someone from a plane crash on an island occupied by the Japanese. I seem to remember the letter Z in the title. Task Force Z? Definitely a stinker! Gallipoli was much better.

Pretty much all the war movies with John Wayne made me laugh, even though I loved the guy.

What about "Hell is for Heroes" , with Steve McQueen?

I hated the MJ Fox movie about Vietnam with Sean Penn.

  4. Anyone have any suggestions for small unit microarmour rules? I am interested in single vehicle/squad-company level actions. I also remember seeing rules for simulating Axis fighter v. Allied bomber formations. Anyone remember or help me find any suitable products? Thanks

  5. I have to agree with some of what was stated in the opening post, but like anyone's opinion, mine included, you can't generalize on such a topic and have any hope of being entirely correct.

I am a citizen of the United States, and relatively proud of my country and our legacy. That said, the United States has as much dirty laundry as any other world power, and more than many.

For every generous act there are acts of malice and greed.

Our country has be favored by geography, resources and timing. Some times we have handled our position with grace and dignity, and other times we have acquited ourselves terribly. This is the country that exports cultural gems such as Hooters and McDonalds to the rest of the world while being capable of helping in many more important and meaningful ways. redface.gifredface.gif (I will never get over the feeling of the beauty of Austria and then noticing the Hooters being built.) I sometimes feel that the communists were correct about our decadent capitalism. I also feel that deep down most of us want to experience such decadence.

Even though these thoughts and feelings bother me, I am proud of my country in many other ways.

  7. Right now Nvidia-based video cards are the best consistently. The current cards are based on the GeForce chipset. You can find reviews at www.gamecenter.com or www.gamespot.com. I do not know of a great place to buy online in the U.K., but www.pricewatch.com allows you to search by several methods for what you want to find for the lowest offered online price. I do not remember seeing any U.K. based companies. Good Luck!!

  8. My experience is that anything below a P2-266 is almost unplayable. I work as an I/T specialist for a large computer firm. In my off hours, I have tested the game on most of our systems, and came up with my minimum standard of a P2-266, 64 MB SDRAM, with a Diamond Viper V550 PCI w/ 16 MB RAM. Of course, not everyone has resources available, but the price for early P2 bundles is very low. The machine I use a work is a dual P3-500 XEON with 1.2 GB ram and a 150 GB RAID-5 array!! A project bought this machine for hosting, and then went tits-up!! I saw the machine sitting around and snagged it while no-one was looking!! It is loud due to the array's fan's and power supply. I have NT4 and Windows 2000 dual-booting, and CM runs great on Win2k!! Only on my off hours, though.

  9. Nothing can stand up to the hours I spent with my friends arguing LOS, etc. The fun of setting up and playing company size actions on a gym floor was the best. But CM is rapidly giving me the same quality experiences. It is a fitting replacement, now that most of my wargaming pals have gone their seperate ways. It is so convenient an opportunity to experience, now that I actually have to work to support myself and my family!!

The "golden goal" rule s**s... Would you imagine a Combat Mission game in overtime where "the first one to knock out an enemy unit wins" ? frown.gif

I would rather them have the Golden Goal that to watch boring overtime and then penalty kicks.

In the Final the Italians seemed to be more organized in the first half and played for the break or to take advantage of mistakes, as their first goal showed. The French definitely played more positive soccer and were rewarded.

As for the long stoppage time, the Italians brought this on by walking off slowly for their substitutes, etc.

I hate to see what Zoff had to go through. It's not as if Italy were always a fav. His tactics and selections got them through, and he's getting lambasted.

I feel EXACTLY the same way. My experience was that students expected dates and names, and were very relunctant to discuss themes and and cause/effect. My last year, I moved to a new school and also coached soccer to help out the athletic staff. I had students telling me that I was too hard for a coach!! They wanted to know why I didn't make them read chapters and answer the questions at the end of each chapter!! In a whole year I only asked them to memorize 15 dates, covering the period from Reconstruction to the present day!!

  12. As far as History goes, there are plenty of bad characters and acts to go around. ironcross is absolutely correct. Britain has plenty to hang its head about (India, Africa, etc), but the U.S. has just as many incidents and policies that would today be unthinkable (American Indians, Slavery, etc.) I never go to a movie expecting anything like objectivity and reality. I would love to see what Custer and his contemporaries would think of the way he is portrayed and thought of today. I would also like the British commanders from the Boer war watch "Breaker Morant."

History is mostly written by the winners, and is almost always slanted to the authors point-of-view.

As far as Education and Liberal Arts:

I have a B.A in History and taught in public high school for 3 years. Any class that is not an "Honors/AP" course is basically set up to meet the very minimum requirements. And I do stress minimum. I taught in the same school that I had graduated from 7 years previously, and it was a different world academically.

I left education for may reasons: low income and low top income, very low levels of competency among students and staff. There are just so many things that seem to be more important than education. I completely agree with what Doug states below:

<That's one of the reasons the US is giving visas to qualified engineers from literally anywhere in the world: American-born, raised-on-TV kids don't want to take hard classes, they want to take easy courses, get their piece of paper, and remember the parties and the stunts longer than the education.>

Once I decided to find a better calling, I quit, went back to school, got a low paying job to get me through, and now barely 3 years later I work for I.B.M, making more than what would have been my top possible salary after THIRTY years in public education. The classes were harder, but definitley worth the effort.

I would encourage anyone to go visit the VA. It is definitely worth the effort, and I think no one will disagree with the fact that veterans deserve our thanks.

  13. I guess you guys will have plenty of time to play now that England is out of Euro 2000. Don't feel bad, though. The U.S team and league is pretty much a joke. I just hope the Premier league will realize that they are in the position Italy was a few years ago, and start letting their young talent develop instead of bringing in so many foreigners. I really miss Beardsley, Lineker and Rush.
