  1. What's the best tactics/strat for countering a full on maximum infantry frontal assault when you're defending? and yes I'm facing just this in one of my first pbems. - xerx
  2. and what drives global morale? Losses? VL capturing? Weather? Wacking the other guy good? It'd be good to know. - xerxes
  3. omg. Want to trade? I'll give you two no bonus HQs and 1 regular zook for your E-0. Please email me your HQ if that's acceptable. thx. And that certainly does answer my question. Glad I'm not playing you on that pbem. heh. - xerxes
  4. What determines your co's combat bonuses. I just started a pbem where I took a regular company and all the co's look like they just got shipped to europe with the pocket edition of "how to command in 3 easy steps." 1/2 of them have no bonus. 1/2 have a +1 in one or at most two categories. No +2 anywhere. Question: Is this normal? Do you really have to buy vets or better to get decent co's? Makes me think I should always buy the best quality available. - xerxes
  5. Personally, I like choosing the force type (Gebers, Falls, Brit paras) x [mechanized, armored, inf]. I think it makes attacks more reasonable game types since you have a better clue what's coming.
  6. umm, I thought my post was just a simple question, I wasn't intending to call down a 155 bombardment on this board. To those that answered politely, thanks. - xerxes
  7. Has it ever been considered to do a RTS version of CM? One in which a minute is a minute and there is no time to debate the next "move"? Personally I think that would increase "realism" more than any other changes. It's also a lot of fun. Real-time strategy is a very different world. I've played a lot of Myth which is a true RTS in which strategy and unit selection are key. Not that they should ever do away with "we-move" but I think a real-time version would pose different challenges. Of course the a.i. would have to take a much bigger role and commands would probably only be given to HQs who would Tac-AI direct the units under their command. Also having multiple commanders/players on a team would really be required. Once again I'm thinking of a myth-like system. BTW, someone did a total conversion of myth to wwII. It's totally unrealistic and not really strategic but it's very popular none the less. - xerxes
  8. Heh, good advice on team desobry. I already got pounded by sticking in the city. I'm in the first night turn and I'm launching a full inf/armor assault on the volks unit in the wooded high ground. I'm wacking their inf hard and overrunning their guns. We'll see, it's costing me some precious resources but I want the high ground before dawn. The axis armor launched a night raid on the city (wtf? I never guessed they would try that). I'm getting the best of that with zooks and close assaults and I've moved my remaining armor in to backdoor them as they slow down after entering the village. The night tank fight is frightful and unforgiving. Luckily they didn't send inf against the front of the village because I've stripped practically everything out of my middle. My losses (particularly armor) are high though, I'm probably in for it when panzer lehr arrives. At least their infantry is badly mangled. The two (at least) Tigers that hurt me during the 1st day haven't exposed themselves yet so I'm dreading their deployment. I also didn't know you could recover vehicles in an operation so a good number of dead pzIVs will come back - dammit. I think I have a feeling for Desobry when he wanted to pull out. -xerxes
  9. Heh, playing the americans in Desoy the germans have moved their heavy tanks into high ground overlooking my city and are pouring ap rounds into any of my tanks that show themselves and when they don't have any hard targets they are mercilessly pounding any of my infantry that get sighted. btw they aren't sighted along roads but are spread out an at an angle allowing all kinds of kill zones throughout my city. It's not pretty for me. I wish they'd move their armor closer but I don't think they are that foolish. So if there is any high ground outside the city I'd make that my #1 priority. -xerxes
  10. If there a way to make your AT team advance to the edge of a building/woods, pop off ONE shoot and hightail it out of sight? - xerxes
  11. Yeah, after I read that I realized that the smg volksgrenadier actually had very good morale and poor training. That probably explains it. I was trying a scenario with polish regulars and they behaved more how I'd expect regular troops to behave. I was also in low ammo condition with all my troops and that's why my fire was less than effective at stopping them. I'm trying the Desoy operation as teh allied defenders, it's great. -xerxes
  12. Already checked out the tactical guides, great stuff! The tips section of the forums had a really nice overview of sharpshooters too. I'm plowing through the manual, lots of interesting tidbits. I like the technique of using a company HQ to sight for a bunch of onboard mortars that are protected behind a hill. I think I figured out at least somewhat the answer to my original question. When there's only 1 guy left in a unit it doesn't mean the rest are dead. It just means they've decided fighting isn't for them. Still, when you're the last guy in your squad willing to fire your weapon are you also going to charge the stone building where 40 of your comrades fell? :shakes head: - xerxes
  13. Just to take my thread back. ::yank:: thank you. I just got the full version when I opened my mail - weeee! Wow, big manual. - xerxes
  14. heh, good question. I registered ages ago when I read about combat mission. But, when the demo came out my poor lil computer couldn't run it. Just upgraded, got a new 3d card and it's all set to go. I like low registrations too. I was #600 in myth:soulblighter. - xerxes
  15. ok, I've only played the demo (I order teh game, it just hasn't arrived). CM is great. But when I tried cranking up the enemy force 100% gets tiresome. Why? Because I get charged by a bunch of green volksgrenadiers smgs. If these were fresh units I could see it. But I get charged by units that have already taken 75-90% casualties before they even charge. This is absurd and it happens consistently. Heck, even elite units shouldn't have that kind of morale. Is it different in the full version? It's still fun, but awfully gamey. - xerxes
  16. What an interesting looking game. I play Myth II and I actually turned off the blood. I think it's a better "game" without the gore. I completely agree with avoiding the gore, for all the reasons stated above, and, I believe gore attracts a different type of player. - xerxes
