  1. I'm sorry, but I think I have to say this:

It is sure that we should make an effort to eradicate bad gaming behaviours. For example, modifying the game to your benefit, or using some sort of 'cheat codes'.

But I think the concept 'gamey' is a bit... well... 'gamey'. smile.gif

What I mean is that CM is a realistic game. Most things work like they should work real life. Sometimes you can have a stroke of bad luck, of course, as you can get lucky, but the action still follows a pattern.

Any behaviour that 'doesn't come from the game', like modifying it, is bad. But if it is IN the game, it should be ALWAYS RIGHT.

I will NEVER modify my tactics if somebody tells me they're 'gamey'. I love WWII history, but I want to play a game, not to make history happen again in a computer simulation. 'Hey, the Germans didn't use this tactic!' some may say. 'Should I care?, I'm not German and this is not WWII anymore!' I'll reply.

In my opinion, you should be allowed to do ANYTHING the game engine allows you to do. And if you don't like the way somebody plays, don't tell him to play any other way, just stop playing with him and look for another opponent...

  2. Guachi,

I knew the meaning, and that was my problem smile.gif

When I saw a 'Heavy Machine Gun' and bought it, I expected to find a .50 cal or something like that, and the only thing I saw was a common MG 42 with a crowd of blokes standing about aimlessly instead of the usual 2 crewmen... I felt like if I was wasting my 'points' (nex time I'll invest in a Königstiger) smile.gif

  3. Hey, good question!

I'm not pretty sure about the answer

Once I was playing Close Combat 2 (aaaargh, eternal damnation! smile.gif ) and I saw that fancy 'Schweres MG' (or whatever way it is written) I was quite happy with it until I noticed it was plainly a MG that costed twice the points.

Anyway, I may have an answer. MGs could be fitted with a bipod (common MGs) or a heavy tripod. In Close Combat 2, the Schweres MG was fitted on a tripod. This was surely to increase accuracy.

I should also say that MGs could also be fitted with a light or heavy bolt. The heavy bolt decreased rate of fire, therefore increasing accuracy. You wanted to use one of those if you had a bipod-mounted MG. But perhaps a tripod could allow you to use the light bolt effectively.

In short: heavy MG squads could fire at a higher rate of fire (1200 rounds per min insteda of 600/800)

I have to tell you I'm NOT sure about it, but it MAY be true (in Close Combat 2, MGs had bipods and Hvy MGs had tripods, if that helps to support my theory)

  4. You don't know about the need of gaming ethics until you have lost entire positions to abandoned tank's crews smile.gif

A friend of mine is well known for that. There are certain things certain units shouldn't be allowed to do. For example: this friend of mine usually plays Warhammer40k. This is not much of a wargame, I know, but there's an interesting rule about heavy weapons crewmen from the Imperial Guard: they CAN'T advance if not with the support of a squad.

I really think tank crews shouldn't advance at all. It's not that they phisically can't, but if I was a tank crewman and my general told me 'Charge!' I would answer something like 'Hold on lad, I'm yet to... em... comb my hair!'

    smile.gif

Now, really. Game ethics would be nice, but the more modern a combat game is, the less rules there are.

1- I don't think we can really talk about 'campers' in a WWII game (hey, call it 'defense', not camping)

2- We can't talk about aimless waste of lives, since some bad generals did...

The victory conditions in CM are quite like real victory conditions. Anything helping to fulfill them SHOULD be allowed, 'camping' and sacrificing units included...

    Any ideas?

  5. Not making the section before anybody gets the game seems pretty obvious to me. We don't even have the editor, so what the hell. Right now, the sections could be 'Riesberg, Last Defense, Chance Encounter', so it's ok for me to wait. smile.gif

What I didn't knew is that you already had lots of big plans in your head about this. I kind of supposed YOU couldn't skip that, though (actually I haven't seen you skipping ANYTHING yet!) wink.gif

And about the call for volunteers, well, I don't ken what I'm volunteering for, but put me up on your list. Anything I can do in order to hel...

    a) BTS, who makes us happy for a small price

    B) You guys at CMHQ, who make us happy for no price at all

...I will do it. So, when the day comes, e-mail me.

    aradigales@mad.servicom.es

(a month later: 'Reverend, Fionn here. You volunteered for shark wrestling a month ago in some thread. You pack up, I'll say goodbye to your wife and children') smile.gif

  6. Sorry lad. I don't mean to be disrespectful. I was just having a little fun, and learning how to draw smileys smile.gif

If you feel offended by any of the things I have written in this thread, then I'm extremely sorry. Many people here thought it was a hoax.

Steve is definitely the person to ask about the evaluation copy.

Again, sorry (but hey, learning how to draw smileys was worth it!) wink.gif

  7. I have heard there is going to be some sort of scenario editor in the full version of the game. If it is so, I'm pretty sure I will spend more time editing things that actually playing smile.gif Now, my two big questions:

    1) Will those scenarios be plugin-like standalone documents? What I mean is, just in case I changed some textures or performed some major change... would all those changes be comprehended inside the same file? This is extremely important, since it would be easier to publish scenarios on the net if they were a single file (like 'mycoolscenario.cmb')

And now, an idea I had:

Why don't we learn from other software companies (for example Bungie Software) and add a maps section to Fionn's CMHQ (for example Bungie's 'The Mill').

In this section people could upload and download scenarios. Fionn would sort them in sections wink.gif (P.E: historical/ficticious, street combat/snowy maps, company-sized/battalion-sized, etc.) and people would rate them (like a like it/don't poll). This way, we would have a huge map storage in which scenarios would be both sorted and rated. Therefore, users could say 'Hey, I want to download a five stars rated, battalion sized, snowy map in which the Germans fight the Americans for the control of a bridge' and just go download it.

Note for Big Time Software: the easier it is for users to contribute, the bigger the community is. And the bigger the community is, the more sales you have... wink.gif

    Any ideas?

  8. Dear Sirs:

The Federation of Fellow Smileys would like you sirs to tell Reverendo how to put those yellow Smileys in BBS messages, since we're sick and tired of those awful looking text smileys he keeps writing.

    Yours faithfully

    The Senior Fellow Smiley

P.S: we could use some evaluation copies too.

  9. Don't forget to add Initiative Movement for Land and Air Mechanized Engineers to your Christmas Evaluation-Copy Giving Campaign, since we would love to play engineering simulations with CM

    Signed: President of I'M LAME

    :¬)

P.S: ok, enough. Somebody close this thread, please! Close it before my brain spills out of my head through my left ear!

  10. Have you met many reviewers who actually knew what TCP-IP was?

    :¬)

Anyway. I don't mean to be hopping mad about the release date, and I do know game programming is anything but an easy task. So may what I'm about to say be regarded as a proof of interest and total BTF worshipping:

Now that the polls show we can wait for TCP-IP, how long do we have to wait for CM?

:¬) Please don't kill me, I'm too young to die.

  11. Ok lads, now for the big question:

I have lots of WWII Books, but they're mostly study books. In about every thread I can find people saying 'Yes, I'm reading yea book from yea guy who tells about the way they landed in Holland' -for example-

Now, may anybody please tell me where can I find that kind of first-person war stories? I live in Spain and the libraries they got here aren't quite focused in WWII, so it would be nice to give the guys at Amazon.com an author, too...

    :¬)

P.S: where can I find 'All-in Fighting' by Fairbairn? You ken, what British tommies read to ken how to kill Germans (yes, the worthless book that never served its purpose!)

  12. Behold, mortals! For this is the best game you will ever see!

I hadn't noticed this thread before. And I enjoyed every detail you told us about, Steve. Mines should be cool, and though I can't quite find an use for engineers in the battle depht CombatMission offers, the idea of blowing a bridge makes me happy! Will there be bridge blowing missions, or it's just a way of bugging people out? In any case, airstrikes seem to be the best way of doing the job. I would love to see many missions featuring airstrikes. Could you please tell me about them in detail?

Thanks steve, you guys at BTS are wonderful. I'm already a happy pre-orderer (hey, I also ordered Achtung!Spitfire yesterday, when will I get it in Spain?)

  13. What level of replayability will the scenarios have?

    What I mean is:

    a) Is night/day/dusk/whatever specified on the map, or you can find yourself playing the same scenario at a different time of the day?

    B) Is weather sorta random? What's the effect of weather? How many weather types can we find?

P.S: © when will the game be released? :¬)
