Damn, now I have to go and burn all my Pink Floyd albums...

I never thought I would think of Roger Waters as a "useful idiot".

    Steve

To see Anzio and Sothampton dock with such heart rending clarity, yet fail so miserably when children and partners now, again, face the same bottomless agony.

    Sic transit gloria mundi…

This area Pisky - position "Republic"- Donetsk airport - Position "Butivka" - Position "Zenit" - Wolven bridge - Avdiivka - position "Promka", not just geographical objects, but symbols of tragic heroism and fortitude of winter 2015. Because of this so sharp reaction in society.

For more on that. I sincerely hope you have all seen these, part 1 and 2. Much of the action takes place around Pisky. Very grim and sobering stuff.

Grigb, I sense you and your family have a personal inflicted wound from soviet times or today's Russia. Because you are really passionate about hating your own country in a way I haven't seen before. It's true I can't debate that, from my safe western corner of fantasies. But I can spot the personal side. The thing is, don't worry the message is getting across and we are not actually that passionate to defend Russia's actions. Maybe we are just playing the devil's advocate to try to challenge our own mindset and seek the truth. Its not changing the course of history. Even if we think that evil or backwards countries still have national interests or rights when even criminals have the right in court to defend themselves and not get them straight to the electric chair.

Panzermartin. The constant in your posts on this subject, as far as I have seen, is that you make no firm claims that you back up with facts. You merely apply a constant pressure of “what if”, “what about”, “maybe”. When you have been called out here you have back off, graciously waving a hand - “oh I was only voicing a thought - but I do understand your opinion”. But you don’t qualify your opinion, instead you merely shift focus - sliding sideways.

Personally I am immensely grateful for this forum precisely because it is not defined by people posting half baked opinions and then just leaving them. Instead real facts, as good as we can get them, are being weighed and analysed, and informed conclusions/assumptions made from from that.

The thing is, in July 2022 we are now beyond talking nice and moral ambiguities with russia . This is full on Germany 1939 with all the bells and whistles. We see all the signs of violent authoritarianism, in what is being said and in whats is being done. That really is all there is to it. How russia, and it’s supporters, rationalises it’s actions is now irrelevant, it is merely the words of a abuser/killer in action. Talking about justice for the perpetrator in that context is to insult and co-abuse the victims.

If I may suggest, or indeed urge: Take a stand, for or against - completely. This is now, or will be, a matter of supporting or opposing the 21st century equivalent of Nazi Germany. It defines you in the eyes of others.

And by the way, showing a “generous understanding” for the opponent’s strong emotions, his/her “personal” side, is front and center in the textbook of social media tactics. I mean, we all know that “hysterics” can not possibly be correct. So lets really highlight that bit in in the mass of facts that the other party produces.

    Over and out.

“This is my last post about RU evilness. But I strongly advise everybody who gives RU benefit of doubt to stop talking and start learning - the real world is different Western European school textbooks.”

Thank you for your patience Grigb. Being forced to relate to USSR/russia my/our whole life, due to its potential and propensity for violence, I can say that it has been a decent into darkness - gradually accelerating over the last 10-15 years and turning into a free fall post February 24.

Looking back I can see that the process has been slowed by my own positive perspective on life, living securely in a relatively just society. Naïveté? Insufficient focus I think.

Any way, I have come and I have seen - and nothing you say contradicts the obvious.

  5. Rheinmetall has launched a new MBT, eh, concept/family. The level of modularity, claimed, makes hard to classify by conventional terms. Food for discussion though… Not least about the name. Oh and hey, we might finally get “environmentally friendly peacetime operations”.

  6. The problem is that the vehicles in CM:BS are of such a wide variety, ranging from WW2 standard eye ball Mk. 1 to cutting edge thermals and C3I systems when it comes to sensors and sensory enhancements. What I am wondering is which vehicles should be kept buttoned up, and which should be guided "with the wind in you face".

    M.

  7. In CM:RT there is no question; you want your AFV commanders unbuttoned to maximize spotting, unless the risk of loosing them is too high. In CM:BS I find I don't know anymore because I can't tell if the sensors availible in this or that vehicle are so advanced that unbuttoning my commander actually degrades my spotting ability. Any ideas on how to make that call?

  8. Ive been told off in another post for pulling the strings open, so now I gotta pull them shut...

As has been pointed out, you are merely fulfilling a traditional role. A little like dressing up as Santa for the kids clamoring for the presents at Christmas (a tradition in these parts at least). Just go with it and enjoy the game, you lucky bastard. And have a safe flight ;)

  9. Waiting for CMBS after watching ChrisND's vids has re-awakened my taste for grognarding to such an extent that I am considering re-purchasing Steel Beasts in the interim, but at $115, it's a very expensive stopgap measure.  My finger is hovering over the "Buy" button as I write this.  Help!

Why not settle for paying 9.50 for a month. You'll have CMBS by then, and know if you really want that very very nice simulator?
  10. Installed the CW module (Hurray!) and hit my head on the QB setup screen (Hurroo):

Under "services" and "combat force" I get some very odd choices (IG ammo bearer and Easy Eight under services for example and.. Light gun tactical and AT rocket under combat force) and most of the standard choices are gone.

I have not tested if it is just the text that is wrong or if the options are actually no longer working...

A bug of some kind I´m afraid though..

  11. Well that doesn't sound like much fun, you should really take your licks, come back swinging - it will be much more gratifying than tearing your hair out and interrupting the battle for several minutes if one of your gunners treads on a mine or a platoon leader is killed by a bullet ricocheting off a tank.

Too true. I wasted years reloading in pursuit of the perfect run until I realized that no victory is more sweet than the one won by forcing your way through both highs and lows. Not to mention all the lessons lost when there is no cost attached to failure.

  12. Which taught us that we wasted a ton of resources on stuff that was, for the most part, not adding real value to the game for most people most of the time. Which is where the seeds of the Module concept came from.

What you did get was wargaming immortality. Anyone with a genuine interest in the subject matter would sense the profound gravity of the work put into CM:BB.

As for CM:BN my pet theory is that most of the people who find it hard to get into it belong to the group that for different reasons didn't play CM:SF, the true biological parent of CM:BN. It took me literally years and two modules to accept CM:SF. But having assimilated the lessons from that game I find that I have had no trouble at all getting out of my Belleville 500´s and slide into the 1943 Uniform Ensemble.

As it stands today I love CM:BN, and for those of you who belong to the aforementioned group, chances are you will too given time. If the evolution of CM:SF is any indication CM:BN+modules will end up at least one order of magnitude better within two year.

Just another garçon de fanatique happy to be along for the ride!

  13. StoneAge has got it right and Mr 16,311 posts is back in the, well, stone age :)

Target light mean 2-3 rounds a minute.

After a few PBEM games I have come to the conclusion that there are very few situations that warrant full target fire. 2-3 rounds a minute holds down heads almost as effectively as 8-12 rounds and as far as damage goes I would much rather have 15 opportunities to cause 3-4 casualties than 3 opportunities to cause 7-12. Remember, for every round after the first two or three there will be diminishing returns as the men in the center of the targeted area has already been hit and the rest goes to the ground.

    Cheers!

    M.

  14. What we would eventually like to get is something akin to this:

    1. HUNT Command - move at a medium speed until a target is available. Engage until destroyed or out of LOF, then continue to move

Huzzah! Another key WEGO feature gets back on line!

Thank you Steve for the How & Why post. After some 12 years of constant and reliable evolution, plus now having been stabilised on my ADHD medicine, I´m quite content with not knowing the When factor :)

  15. After having played one or two quick battles I simply stopped moving the first turn. Most of the time there will be a barrage or more coming in for no good reason other than adding some ambience. After all, once you know it will happen it´d be stupid to move and my willing suspension of disbelief just cannot cope with something as crude as these first turn "AI support missions". I wish the designers would just dispense with them and let the AI sort out the artillery itself. Something it can do quite well at times.

  16. You have random service selected. My guess would be that the random service that came up was US Airborne Infantry.

I tried this, random service and mixed force, and ended up in the same situation as the OP again and and again. And no, I was not able to choose airborne troops. In fact experimenting with this I noticed that I can´t get airborne troops even if I want to in a QB. What setting do you use to get them?
