  1. I downloaded SANDRA, a most interesting program! From it I got that my motherboard is a Lucky Star K7VAZ(S)-A2 with a VIA chipset KT133/A. The BIOS appears to be a Award Modular v6.00PGN, dated 10/12/00.

I used Google to look for Award Modular Bios updates and found versions from 4.x all the way up to 8.x and higher! I have no idea whether I should try one of these or not.

I loaded the latest SB drivers, but have had no luck in curing the stuttering sound/frozen game problem. By the way, it does happen in CMBO as well???

I am not too clear on isolating the IRQ for the SB. It is in the first slot on the mother board and the network card is next to it, followed by the video card. Are you suggesting a different physical order, or something in the software?

    Thanks again for your patience!

  2. Schrullenhaft, I did update the SB drivers and have been trying out the suggestion of slowing down the sound acceleration (in the sound tab of DXDIAG) but I'm still experiencing the freeze ups. I am not sure how to tell what motherboard I have as I don't have a manual for it. Is there a way to tell via software or markings on the board?

I may also be a victem of a corrupted operating system as I get fairly frequent "blue screens of death" with VXD VREDIR and VXD MCSCAN32 faults that requre a reboot. If it is my operating system, would you recommend going to Win ME or Win 2000 or some other product, vice trying to rebuild Win 98?

    Thanks for your help!

  3. The CMBB demo runs OK on my system for short periods (never more than 1 or 2 turns) but freezes up at seemingly random times. It requires a reboot to recover. When the game freezes the sound seems to stutter on whatever sounds it was producing. I'v been running CMBO just fine since it came out.

I saw Schrullenhaft's comments about problems with Creative products. Is there anything else I should try before buying a new sound card?

    My system specs are:

    AMD Athelon processor

    510 Meg

    Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A

    DirectX 8.1 (4.08.01.0881)

    Creative SB Live!

    WinFast® GeForce2 GTS/GTS Pro

    Main Driver nvdisp.drv (ver 4.13.01.2183)

    Thanks!

  4. The current Mod Manager program is very useful. It would be helpful to be able to sort the mods into groups and then be able to select these groups to load. This would allow different mod mixes for specific scenarios without having to manually designate the zip files each time. I know you can do this now, by building separate combined-zip files, but it would be useful as a built-in feature.

  5. When I first began playing CMBO I encountered a similar problem of "stuttering" during playback. I have not been able to cure it, but only reduce the effect. I found that by putting my McAfee Viruscan into standby mode, it improved the performance noticeably. My system isn't as powerful as the one described here, it is only a PIII/450 with 256M ram, and a 32Meg GeForce MX card.

  6. I am involved in a game which is still 5-10 turns from the final turn. I have killed or driven all of my opponent's men and equipment from the map, yet the CPU will not end the game. My opponent confirmed all his men are gone. My global morale is at 47%, though I don't know what my buddy's is. Any reason why this wouldn't have ended by now?

  7. I am using the SB Live! I posted the following on the Tech board, but it may apply here:

I have been living with a chattering sound and playback problem ever since I began playing CM. It seems like what one would have when a peripheral is being accessed and the playback and sound stutter. I just noticed that the new beta load leaves an error log on my directory and I wondered if it might help me identify the problem. Specifically, my sound card is a Creative SB Live card, I am running a PIII 450 with 384M ram. My error log says:

    CPU speed rated at 1631

    Sound is NOT Microsoft certified

    Sound card has memory (K) = 512

    K/s download rate to hardware = 0

    Software overhead in CPU % = 0

Max # of static buffers that can be mixed = 32

Max # of buffers (static or stream) that can be mixed = 32

    Max # of static 3D buffers = 32

    # normal sound channels: 3

% CPU usage for standard channels: 0

    # 3D sound channels: 9

    % Total CPU usage: 0

The rest of the log shows it playing normally. Can anyone spot an anomaly in these first lines of the log?

  9. Last night I noticed a detail that has thus far escaped me. My M-10 was climbing a small hill when I heard a change in the sound of its engine. The damn thing had bogged! Coincident with the bogging sound, the vehicle sank into the ground, half way up it's tracks. About 20 seconds later, during which there was continuous engine noise from the M-10, there came a whirring sound and the engine noise stopped. At the same time the information bar now showed it was now immobile. An amazing attention to detail, though one I would have liked to read about from my opponent!

  10. I posted this on the Tech forum but wanted to reach the wider audience of this board:

I would like to correspond with others using this card. I installed a new 32Meg GeForce 2 MX in my PIII 450, WIN 98 equipped system. I am using the version 6.35 driver. I had been using a 16Meg NVidia card. For some reason the video playback is worse with the new card. I am seeing much more jerkiness and slowdown. I would like to pick someone's brain about how to best tweak the driver settings for CM.
